MOTORSPORTS PREVIEW – FEB. 12-15

Racing returns to this area as MRANN stages it’s first event of the season this weekend. The action begins at 10 a.m. when the Pee Wees start followed by the Saturday Women and Mini Bikes.

The big bikes get their chance on Sunday starting at 10 a.m. and as usual a rider needs to complete one lap to be classified as a finisher.

Once again the race will be held about 10 miles north of the Nightingale exit on I-80 east of Fernley. It’s a good dirt road suitable for cars.

Racing on both the Internet and TV ramps up as NASCAR begins its annual Speed Weeks at Daytona, Florida.

One again MAVTV will have several events on Thursday starting at 11 a.m. with a FIA World Rally Championship event followed at 12:30 by the Dirty Thirty show.

Then at 1:30 its American Sprint Boats followed at 4 p.m. by part 2 of the Winter Heat Spring Car Showdown.

The annual NASCAR all star race, now known as the Sprint Unlimited has practice sessions at 2 and 3:30 p.m. Friday on Fox Sports 1.

After Fox took over Speed NASCAR began Internet coverage of races on www.fanschoice.tv.

One feature is the annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing from the 13th through the 21st with races broadcast at 4:30 p.m. from New Smyrna Speedway.

Saturday’s broadcasts on MAVTV have a noon showing of the FIA World Rally Championship event from Italy then at 4:30 pm. the Lucas Oil ASCA Sprint Cars from Yuma, Arizona.

Out at Daytona racing on the high banks begins at 1:15 p.m. as the ARCA series has its traditional opener.

For NASCAR fans there is Sprint Cup Practice followed by the Sprint Cup Unlimited race at 5:15 p.m. as the cars take to the high banks of the Daytona International Speedway.

Supercross fans can only see the Texas event live if they can get Fox Sports 2 but the race is re-aired starting at midnight on Fox Sports 1.

History might be made if Vicki Golden, who has raced here in Reno, can make the night show for the 250 East series. If so she’ll be the first female rider to do this.

Then on Sunday starting at 10:30 a.m. qualifying for the Daytona 500 begins. Only the front row is actually secured with the other positions set after next Thursday’s Twin 150 races.
