RACING PREVIEW – AUG. 3-7

Racing preview for this week has something for just about every race fan. And one traditional event, not returned to its original venue is doing something special to honor the sport’s history.

With Labor Day weekend here, one regional track is ending its 2015 season while another is continuing on. With few races left in the season points are becoming critical for many drivers.

Ferney 95A Speedway - Super Stock 4 class.

Among the classes racing at Fernley 95A Speedway are the Super Stock 4 division.

Fernley 95A Speedway hosts its second race in as many weeks, starting at 6 p.m. Saturday and all the car classes will be in action. Further north, in Susanville at the fairgrounds, Diamond Mountain Speedway stages its final race of the year, and if any class has a tight points race, this event will be critical.

Motocross riders or those just wishing to get in some seat time, Livfast Exit 28 MX track will host practice sessions from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

TV this weekend is full of various types of racing.

Thursday begins at 4 p.m. when NBC Sports re-airs a K&W East race then at 6 p.m. Fox Sports 2 brings you the TORC Off Road race from Chicago. Finally the evening ends at 10:30 p.m. on NBC Sports as they show a Global Rallycross event.

Friday is pretty much filled with practice sessions from Darlington Speedway starting at 8 a.m. on NBC Sports and at 8:30 p.m. the network will air the Indy Car awards banquet from San Francisco.

The big race on Saturday, on NBC at 12:30 p.m., is the Xfinity race from Darlington. That track was NASCAR’s first Super Speedway and now, after several years, its traditional Labor Day weekend events have returned.

Sunday starts early, at 4:30 a.m. when NBC Sports brings the F-1 race from Monza, the Italian Grand Prix. If Ferrari can manage a victory the place will go absolutely crazy.

Darlington Speedway - Richard Petty in his 1972 Plymouth.

This year’s Labor Day race from Darlington will have several cars sporting retro paint schemes. Aric Almirola will have his car resembling one his owner Richard Petty used to drive.

Then at 4 p.m. NBC will show the Sprint Cup race from Darlington. This is the traditional date for the Southern 500 and once again its where it should be.

And its another critical race for Las Vegas native Kyle Busch. He’s 29th in points, one behind Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and 10 behind Trevor Bayne. After missing 11 races earlier due to injuries, he has to be within the top 30 in points to make the championship chase and there are only two races left before that starts.

This week Monday is a huge day for drag racing fans as the NHRA Mellow Yellow series stages the Chevy Performance U.S. Nationals. This sets the countdown for the championships and is one race every drag racer wants to win.

Live coverage begins at 9 a.m. on ESPN 3 then at 11 a.m. switches to ESPN News. The final rounds are tape delayed and start at 1 p.m. on ESPN.

Finally, on the Internet, www.fanschoice.tv has a host of short track events on Saturday and some are rebroadcast during the week.

If possible be sure to get out and support our local tracks. No matter how good TV is there is nothing that compares to being at a race where you experience the speed, color, noise and excitement a live event offers.

Have a great Labor Day weekend everyone.
