BUSY WEEKEND WITH CAR MEETS & CRUISES

RENO, NV (June 8) — With the exception of a windy Saturday the weather was great for most events this weekend. There was something for almost everyone.

Meting place is the Maverik station at Sutro & North McCarran.

• Friday evening started when the Reno Bike Community gathered at the Maverik station located by the corner of Sutro Street and North McCarran.

There was a good turn out for the Friday cruise.

Turnout was pretty good as more and more bikes keep arriving. Around 7 p.m. it was kickstands up for a cruise to Carson City.

Old Slammers of Reno met at the Northtowne parking lot.
  • Not far away, at the Northtowne parking area Old Slammers of Reno started arriving for their cruise.
  • The club is celebrating its 20th anniversary so that had everything from sedans, Beetles and vans.
There were a variety of cars including this Karmann Ghia and a very decorated Beetle.
  • Around 7 they would be leaving for a cruise. Some of the Beetles were decorated while others were stock.
Despite the wind Need2Speed was a busy place on Saturday.

• On a windy Saturday Need2Speed held another of its Karts & Kars meets. The turn out was a bit less than expected but there still were a bunch of cars and trucks present.

Two vendors has a huge selection of toy cars and one of them had many Hot Wheels.

In the patio are there were vendors, one of which had a huge selection of Hot Wheel toy cars for sale.

At the patio entrance were these three Dodge cars.

Not far away a trio of Dodge cars were lined up.

Little Ram on a big Ram.

Outside the gate a Dodge Ram truck had a miniature of itself over the radiator and grill.

There were lines of cars to see in the parking lot.

Out in the parking lot there were a few lines of cars plus some pickups that people could view.

• There were a trio of car meets on Sunday.

Great weather helped bring out a great turn out.

+ Reno Cars & Coffee had its first meet of the month. Blessed by great weather the turnout was large with long rows of cars to see.

There was a short Corvette row.

As usual there was a Corvette row featuring different generations of the car.

Not often you find a Corvette for sale but this one is.

Not far away one Corvette was for sale. When asked the owner said he hadn’t gotten any offers at that time.

Ed Hughes was able to get all three Cobras to park side-by-side for this great picture. Photo courtesy -Ed Hughes.

Ed Hughes was also there and got the three Cobra owners to line up there cars. Ed has great shots of any meet or cruise he’s on so I highly recommend checking this and his Face Book page,

This 1957 Ford Custom 300 owned by Ron John was on display.

Over at the end of one row Ron John and his wife Lisel had their 1957 Ford Custom 300. Ron has had a long-term relationship with the car.

“When I was 15 years old I had 1500 bucks and was looking for a car. I looked at this one and was also looking at a ‘56 Custom Line,” he said.  “I looked at this one first then we looked at the ’56. I told my dad ‘I like that ’57 so let’s go look at it again.”

The next time he saw it the owner had painted flowers all over it so he decided not to buy it due to the car’s appearance. He chose the ’56, which was a two-door Custom Line with a wide block in it.

“About two or three later there was an ad in the paper, before Craig’s List, Market Place and everything, for a ’57 Ford that my dad seen,” he said. “He went on his own and looked at then bought it. I came by that night, I was probably 18 or 19 then, and there was the same car I looked at when I was 15.”

He added by then the car was primer black, had Harley Davidson on the hood and Porsche on the trunk. After his father passed away John took it over.

Ron John and his wife Lisel stand by their restored Ford.

“We didn’t start working on it until about five years after he passed away and it was in pieces. He had the work done, was in the middle of the interior and all the windows were out of it but we had the side trim on it.

“I rebuilt the whole front suspension, put disk brakes on it. We had a junkyard 390 in it and last winter put the 427 center oilier with a Sniper Fi and slowly got it back together.”

Of course the big question is how does it drive.

“It drives good, I put a 5-speed in it, 356 gears, I just put a traction lock Posi in the rear end. It drives nice now.”

This Kawasaki Vulcan Drifter with a side car was on display.

There were also a couple of two-wheel vehicles. Well one of them was a Kawasaki Vulcan Drifter with a side-car so I guess that meant it was a three-wheel vehicle.

Sitting by itself over to one side was a scooter.

Charle McGill stands by her Honda Scooter she rode to the meet.

Asked about it owner Charle McGill said, “ This is an ’81 Honda Express SR Scooter. I’ve had it for a couple of months, had to get it running, had to modified a few things on it to get it to run.

“It rides about like 30 miles an hour but it’s two-stroke, carbureted and all that fun stuff. I get about a hundred miles per gallon but it depends on how you ride it. It’s a super fun ride on a Sunday morning.”

+ That same morning The VDUB Club of Northern Nevada was staging their Summer Fest ’26.  Location was the South Virginia Plaza in Mid Down.

At the VDUB Hub meet there were a lot of buses as well as cars.

As expected there were all kinds of VW’s including a lot of busses as well as all types cars that Volkswagen  produced over the years.

Marie Wikoff is the President of VDUB of Reno. Here she’s standing by her 1969 VW named Ladybug.

Marie Wikoff is the VDUB President, asked about the organization she said, “Our club’s been around foe about seven years now and today we probably have 85 cars showing up here. Amazing beautiful buses, bugs, Gias, Type 2’s, station wagons and everything like that.

“It’s a great day, the weather’s perfect, I love all the people. We’ve got a great turn out, great people, I love all these people.”

She added if someone has a VW and wants to join they should go to the VDUB Hub of Northern Nevada on Face Book. It’s a simple two-part question that asks if they live in Northern Nevada and if they have a Volkswagen.

“We have about 680 members. Within our hub we try to bring in all the other clubs, we’ve got Old Slammers, which is celebrating their 20th anniversaryand we have Slow Going.”

She added people put on cruises, car shows and they try to keep everybody informed and keep the Volkswagen vibe alive.

Looking ahead they will have a show at the National Auto Museum on June 28. Although they are sold out for the cars, anybody can come in and visit.

Some of the VW’s were decorated.

There were also decorated Beetles and other models.

Needless to say the parking area was jammed with all types of VW’s.

The show was jammed with all types including Karman Ghias as well as Beetles.

The Cruise-In at Summit had cars as well as pick ups.

+ Summit Racing Parts had a Sunday afternoon cruise-in that included pick-ups and cars.

This restored 1967 Chevy Super Sport now has a metal hood.

One of them was a 1967 Chevy Supra sporting a new metal hood. The previous one was fiberglass that was bowed in a couple of areas.

This restored 1949 Studebaker pickup was on display.

Another classic was a 1949 Studebaker Pick Up. Looks like a great and modified restoration.

Variety is the name of the game at these meets.

The other line had a pickup parked by a Rat Rod an included several types of cars.

All in all it was a busy weekend for car and motorcycle fans.
