DEAD HORSE STARTS AREA RACING

Nightingale ( Feb. 15) – The Trail Blazers motorcycle club hosted the first race in our region for 2015. It traditionally not only opens racing in our region but starts MRANN’s season as well.

This year the name is the Dead Horse 95.5 and it was the 17th annual Hare and Hound race.

When the dust settle a veteran hot shoe, one that suffered significant injuries less than two years ago, showed that’s he’s healed and still has the speed needed to win races.

After taking the checkered flag winner Reese Honea was asked by his brother Ron if he was back in riding shape again.

“No,” he said. “That first 45 (Miles) was rough on me trying to get rhythm but it was tiring. The second loop I loosened up finally and made it to the finish with no mistakes. Just trying to be loose as I haven’t been riding for a while.”

Then he thanked M.J. Barenbak Plumbing and Heating since they’ve helped him with his bike. He also added RMS, MSR Gear, Oakley goggles, his girl friend and his family.

In addition to lining up in separate groups the riders straddled a tire before a banner was lowered that indicated a start. Of course the experts took off first followed at one or two minute intervals by the amateurs and novice riders.

When the experts took off Drew Chattin grabbed the hole shot and most of the first one mile loop. Going up the final Honea made the winning pass and took off with the field in hot pursuit.

That first short loop brought the field by the pits so those that couldn’t get to the start could see the riders hurtling past them at racing speed.

Zane Roberts, in third place at the start of the second loop goes after Drew Chattin.

Half way through the first loop Zane Roberts held second followed by Chattin as they roared across the desert.

Leaving the pits and heading into the second and different loop Honea had about a 20 second lead over Chattin and Roberts with veteran Steve Garnett holding down fourth.

Behind them came the quartet of Austin Serpa, Nathan Wright, Shane Bell and veteran Dan Capparelli.

That last rainstorm left the dirt in great shape and there were several areas where it was still a little bit wet. This made for greater traction and less dust for the racers to contend with.

In the end Honea took the checkered with an almost 3 and a half minute lead over second place Garnett, who enjoyed seeing his almost 3-year-old daughter (At her first race,) wave the checkered flag for him.

“The course was perfect even with some wet dirt, you could see the lines in front of you pretty well. And overall it was great,” Garnett said. “I may do the Baja 500 in June but I’m going to do more of these races this year and I’m going to try and hit them all.

Then he thanked his wife Jamie his daughter Michael, who he said loves motorcycles.

Then third place Zane Roberts said, “It was good but there were a lot of whoops so I’m super tired but it was a lot of fun. Drew got ahead of me but he made a mistake. I was super tired at the beginning but I had a little more energy so I made it back to the end.”

Then he thanked EKS Goggles, Atlas Neck Braces, Dunlop Tires and his parents.

Drew Chattin ended up fourth overall after a long battle for third with Roberts.

“It was fun with a lot of whoops,” he said. “I was on the side ledge, was going way too fast, jumped off the side and couldn’t get up. Zane passed me when I was going up, stopped to try and help me but I said I’m fine.”

Then he thanked RMS, FMF, Moose Racing and his family.

In this event it was thought the younger riders would win but two veterans took the top two places with the young lions claiming third and fourth overall.

Jeff Tabcizi finished 22nd overall and was the first amateur to complete both loops of the race.

Further down the finishing list 22nd place Jeff Tabcizi, the first amateur.

After taking a breath he said, “The race was fun, lots of whoops and I’m not in as good a shape as I should be.”

Then he thanked the Desert Fox, Dennis Belingheri and everyone at RMS for their support.

Close behind was Jeston Ponciano, who won the Over 30 Amateur class.

“I could see him (Tabcizi) up there but I just couldn’t reel him in. The course was fun as the fast sections were in the front so you’re feeling pretty good then you get to this back section and it’s all whooped out and you’re just done,” he said. “It reminds you how out of shape you are but a good time, not real dusty as still some moisture in the dirt and you couldn’t ask for any better day than this.”

Then he thanked his wife Diane and mentioned that he’s unsponsored right now.

In his first ever race novice Jacob Kinkel wound up 25th overall and won his class.

One amazing finish was 25th place novice Jacob Kinkel as his row started last a good two minutes plus behind the expert line.

“I was just having fun, doing my thing. This is my first race ever in my whole life,” he said. “I really loved it, it was good, wet dirt, overall it was really sweet. The whoop sections are long and they feel like they’re never going to end so I just got through them and went faster when I could.”

He added the best parts were the waterfalls and technical parts where he made a lot of his passes. Then he gave special thanks to his family for their support.

Four women amateurs started and three of them finished both loops. First across the line in 51st place was Heather Pickering.

After not racing for about four years Heather Pickering won the Women's amateur class in Sunday's MRANN race.

After not racing for about four years Heather Pickering won the Women’s amateur class in Sunday’s MRANN race.

“This is my first race back in almost four years,” she said. “I used to race District 36 in California. The whoops as usual they throw them in the very last so we’re really tired going through was the worst part but it wasn’t too bad, I’ve been in worse and there were a lot of fast sections although it’s not my forte.”

Then she thanked her parents, husband A.J. Pickering, who also raced plus Sierra Motorsports in Grass Valley.

Not far behind was Nichole Collins, who is preparing for the VCGP in late April. She’s a senior at UNR and moved here after starting college in Santa Barbara.

“I race here and there, just when I have the time. This race was really, really fun, I got tired definitely but it was a really fun track. My knees are kind of jacked up so they starting hurting. I was in first the first lap then Heather just caught up and rode better than me today.

Then she thanked her parents, Mach One and Norcal KTM.

Beth Legenbauer was a bit further behind and the third woman to make the full two loops.

• Saturday is the day for the youngest competitors and short track racers. Leading off the action was the Pee Wee race and the top three were Chase Cannizzaro, Landen Williams and Ryder Thomaselli.

Following that was a race combining the Mini Bikes, Saturday Women and Bombers.

Dallas Serpa reached the checkered flag first followed by Chrystal Ponsock, women’s expert, and Kody Gray. Further back was Amanda Ross and Jolene Harsch, the women amateur and novice winners with Jim Berryman winning the Bomber class.

Now everyone gets two weeks off before MRANN’s next event at the end of the month.
