4TH ANNUAL SANDBOX GRAND PRIX

Fernley (March 29) — Four years ago MRANN and the local OTHG combined forces for the initial Sandbox Grand Prix. It’s a day full of motocross action on an 2.5 mile long course that ends with a team race.

There are no points, money only bragging rights and a trophy. And its become one of the most anticipated fun events of the year. And once again the venue was the Sandbox or the Fernley Lion’s Motocross Track.

Teams are made up from two to four riders and they pick some crazy names. The starting riders get a scrunchee they wear around their wrist.

And they start, depending if they are expert/pros, amateur/juniors or novice/beginners in separate rows about 30 seconds apart.

When the GP starts they head out onto a 2.5 mile course, whip through a lap then return to the pits where they hand off the scrunchee to their teammate that also does a lap.

During the Grand Prix Austin Walton waits while a member of his team puts on the scrunchee that ever rider must wear while on the course.

Needless to say it gets pretty wild after a while with riders having various skill levels all trying to get through traffic and back to the pits. And while it started pretty snappy by the time 90 minutes rolls around the exchanging of the scrunchee slows down a bit.

After finding out they won the overall with a corrected time of 2:02:49:930 both Ryan Ferris and Bryar Perry were both surprised and pleased.

“I started off, got the hole shot, got passed on one of the straights by a guy on a 450, came around in second and passed the scrunchee off,” Ferris said. “By the time bryar came back round we were up in first. Then we were neck and neck with the team behind us, wheel-to-wheel for three or four laps, about 15 or 20 minutes.”

After another hand off Perry had contact with another rider that pushed him into another riders so both of them went down.

“After that we really didn’t know where we were so we just rode out best and I guess we were ahead by quite aways. The track was really good today, they did a good job with prepping it and it was super rough, which was fun,” Perry said.

When it came to the thanks Perry, who owns 180 Decals is the main sponsor Ferris has. For his part Perry is grateful for Ferris putting him up whenever he comes to Reno.

After the first lap of the Grand Prix, Tucker Larrieu was just ahead of Ferris. On the next lap Perry was in the lead but their team and another were battling.

Once Perry went down both he and Ferris weren’t sure of just where they were placed so they rode hard for the remainder of the two-hour long event. This effort paid off as, at the end, they were a full two minutes ahead of team Goon Squad.

During the race the place was a blur of riders coming in and leaving the pits as well as many, many exchanges. The effort takes its toll on riders and pushes them to their physical limits but everyone got through it.

However there were some penalties handed out for both speeding in the pits as well as cutting the course. Apparently on the backside there was an area where a rider could short cut the course without knowing it.

However with transponder scoring this would be known to the scoring crew when the scans were checked.

In the end the Expert/Pro teams took most of the top 10 places although Goon Squad, made up of Intermediate riders placed a solid second. The first Amateur team was 14th place Turtle Tracks.

After the dust settled and the scoring crew finished Bryar Perry and Ryan Ferris (right) won first overall and got the trophy.

The day actually began with five motocross races, using the extended track and running for 45 minutes.

First up was the Novice/Beginner race where Chase Ryehlik was first on point with Layne Hornback and Nicholas Kasterine giving chase. Both Hornback and Ryehlik swapped places a couple of time but in the end it as Ryehlik’s race.

“The race was fun but he was pretty close to me and we almost hit bars,” he said.

After Hornback finished he said, “I got really tired and couldn’t hang on so I slowed down a lot.”

Next up was one of the biggest fields of the day as 60 riders started the race with 58 finishing. This field was made up from 30, 40, 50 and 60 year old riders.

As such they left the starting in three different lines with the experts going first followed by the amateur/juniors then novice and beginner riders.

After the first lap Kevin DeCarli was on point followed by Jeff Klino and Steve Garnett in third. Lap after lap they tore around the course and it appeared at first that Decarli was in the catbird’s seat.

However veteran Garnett was steadly moving up and in the last minutes mounted a challenge to DeCarli that led to both riders swapping the lead a few times.

Kevin DeCarli wheels his bike around a corner. He won his race but it was a narrow victory as Steve Garnett almost caught him at the finish.

On the last lap Garnett was reeling in the leader again but came up short at the finish and had to settle for second.

After the checkered DeCarli said, “I had a great time, the layout is great and the flow is awesome. He (Garnett) passed me at the end, like the second to last lap or the last and it was, ‘like where did he come from.’ So I had to downshift and start chasing him down and was able to get back by him.”

Then he thanked his wife as she takes their kids to sports and he can race.

Later Garnett said, “the race was fun, got a decent start and was third or fouth on the first lap but I went down before the finish line. Got up and rode like I ride and caught up with the leader and passed him. He passed me back and we went back and fourth three or four time in the last couple of laps. Wish I knew it was the last lap as I was right on his wheel.”

The next race was for the Junior/Amateurs. At the Sandbox divisions in MRANN and motocross are grouped so there is no real advantage other than how fast a rider can go.

Once Austin Johnson got into the lead of his race it was smooth sailing to the victory.

Once Austin Johnson got into the lead of his race it was smooth sailing to the victory.

When the Jr./Ama race began Austin Johnson took off with Ed Sellers and Aver Dyrr giving chase. It only took a lap or two for Johnson to take command and leave everyone in his dust.

At the end Johnson claimed the victory followed by Sellers and Brendon Borrego.

“It was good, I got a pretty good start and then I just rode my own race once I got out front,” Johnson later.

Then he thanked his parents and Team RMS for their support.

The final regular motocross event pitted open experts against intermediates using both 250 and 450 bikes. And as such they were started in two separate lines.

When they started Tucker Larriue soon caught the early leader and took over the point. A little while later Bryar Perry caught and passed him for the lead.

Unfortunately Perry’s run came up short when he had to stop for fuel and dropped out of contention. However behind the leaders Austin Walton, who came out of the second line, was on a mission and running down those ahead of him.

Eventually he caught and passed Larrieu and went on to win the overall.

Coming from the second line that started his race Austin Walton was on a mission and eventually he took the lead and victory.

Coming from the second line that started his race Austin Walton was on a mission and eventually he took the lead and victory.

“I started in the second line but the guys in the front was who I was going for. I just kept charging until the end of the race until I caught them as that was my goal,” Walton said. “I passed Tucker probably five or six laps to go then I started pulling away a little bit as I was trying to conserve some gas cause when I got back and checked it I’m almost empty.”

Then he thanks his parents, TMC, Gaerne Boots, Renthal Handlebars, Alias, Excell and anybody else he forgot.

Larrieu ended up second overall about a minute back of Walton.

After catching his breath he said, “It was fun, it’s pretty whooped out and beat but it was fun for the most part. I got a decent start, one guy got ahead of me, I passed him a couple of corners in and then number 180 (Perry) caught me, passed me then I passed him. At the end and Austin Walton passed me so I was second overall.”

Despite a day full of hard racing the medics were hardly even needed so any injuries were minor.

OTHER RACING NEWS

• Over the past months Jeff McCollum and Eric McElroy, both veteran motocross racers that don’t compete anymore, have been working to breath life back into the Old Timers chapter. They also have been getting a lot of help from the Over the Hill Gang chapter.

Last week before the Old Timers held practice sessions in Fernley McCollum found the water truck needed to be repaired. Then he found the gentleman that owns the repair shop behind the truck washing facility in Fernley.

The person is a former racer himself and repaired the trucks and will maintain them in the future. So he’s helping both clubs continue to offer motocross racing in this area.

And his shop not only works on trucks but about anything vehicle. His organization is KRM Motorsports

• According to his brother Reese Honea was released from the hospital in Idaho. He was being treated for a torn kidney and should be on his way back home.
