95A SPEEDWAY – OLSCHOWKA WINS

At 95A Speedway track honors veterans that have given the ultimate sacrifice. Then the racing program began for the night.

FERNLEY (May 23) – The 95A Speedway began Saturday evenings show with race cars parked on the front straight to honor veterans that either gave their lives for our country or have passed on. Then the cars did a couple of parade laps to put an exclamation point on the ceremony.

After the IMCA feature ended, winner Jeff Olschowka said, ” The race was awesome man, I had no idea where anybody was at as I was just cruisin’. Car was pretty good, track’s awesome, smooth, nice and racy, I liked it.”

Then he thanked his parents, BMS Motorsports, Olschowka Blackwell and everyone that helps him out.

When the green waved on the 19-car field Olschowka and Missy Natenstedt took off but a spin caused a restart. On the second green Olschowka took off again but this time it was Cory Sample giving chase.

Then there was another spin so racing resumed on the second lap. Back in the pack Shawn Natenstedt had worked his way into fifth with Robert Miller close behind in sixth.

The lead duo then began to gap the field while Natenstedt and Miller took over 4th and 5th place.

The race was stopped when Jim Klopp and Russ Cazier tangled on the front straight almost under the starter’s stand. The medics rushed to check on both drivers; Cazier was unhurt although Klopp did need help getting out of his car.

It took a while to clean up the mess and resort all the cars into their proper order, but in the end the green waved again and everyone took off.

Up front Olschowka gave his car the gas with Sample behind him. Behind them Ryan McDaniel and Jake Holland were on the move as they headed to the front.

Natenstedt eventually faded to sixth while McDaniel first was after Holland, passed then was passed by Miller, who ended up fourth.

Up front Holland was after Sample whose car began to fade and he dropped back to third. Then the chase was on with five to go.

By then, even with traffic Olschowka wasn’t about to be denied and he scored the victory with Holland coming home second.

“We just ran out of time there at the end,” Holland said later. “I used up a little bit of the car trying to get to second and when I got up there McDaniel was putting a lot of pressure on me and I’ve go to thank him for racing me clean. You know Jeff ran a great race, got out there in front and do what he had to do to protect it.”

Then he thanked his grandparents, family for fans for being there as well as sponsors Granite Propane and Earl Motorsports.

For Sample, the defending track champion, it was another not so good night.

“The car hasn’t been good all year so we’ve just been throwing changes at the car trying to get better. Just didn’t quite have it tonight. We were just skating around and finally when Miller challenged for third we held out line on the outside, should have just stayed up there,” he said.

The Pro Stocks had another bonus night as for the second time this season the winner would pocket $1,000 for the victory.

When the green waved Malen Gonzalez, driving B. J. Pearson’s “Nuclear Banana,” car took off with Darrick Rauscher on is back bumper. Less than a lap later Rauscher slowed but would get going again.

Two laps into the race Al Goss tangled, was spun sideways and hit by the car of James Greenwalt, who could not avoid him.

Both cars were able to continue but neither finished the race.

On the restart Gonzalez took off with Rob Grace and Gary Nevers giving chase. Toward the end of the main there was another caution after a car spun.

Once again, when the green waved Gonzalez took off pursued by Grace and Nevers. Two more cautions slowed the pace late in the race.

Grace did spin and had to start from the back.

In the final laps Gonzalez took off and went into cruise control has he left everyone in his dust. Gordon Russell finished second followed by the charging Grace and Nevers.

“The race was good, need to thank everybody that helped us get this car out here as there is a lot of people involved,” Gonzalez said. “All the way from B.J. Pearson that owns the car to Bob Oliver from Competition Carburetor, Reldon Racing Engines out of Yerington and my wife who is my crew chief. The car was great, problems in the heat race so had to change the carburetor , which was leaking and had to move some weight around.”

When the Street Stock main began it was a side-by-side duel between Rick Miller and Jake Baker. Finally Miller secured the point while, behind him, Dwight Bolton was heading toward the front.

Once Bolton took over second the chase was on but Miller held on to the lead and they finished in that order but were close at the checkered flag.

“We needed that really bad, we needed that confidence builder. The last three laps I was taking it easy, I didn’t want to mess up so I wasn’t pushing it,” Miller said at the awards ceremony.

Then he thanked his long time friend J.T. Stark as well as sponsors Drive Line Service, A&W, All American Foods and Miller’s Chop Shop.

When the Super Stock 4 main began Danielle Paine was on point while usual contender Dennis Crook slowed and dropped back with some kind of mechanical problem.

Up front it Paine then was holding off Kenny Martin, who finally used an inside move to take the lead at the end of the front straight.

Martin went on to win with Paine second ahead of Crook.

“The race was great, the best track I’ve ever driven on. I think all the rain the past week really saturated it and made for a great track,” Martin said later. “I could go high and low, put the car anywhere on the track. And I need to thank my girl friend Melinda for her support.”

Only three Pure Stocks were on hand and it appeared that once again Rich Innis would garner the victory. However mechanical woes put an end to his night two laps from the end of the main.

While their may only have been two cars running at the end victor Trevor Quell (55) and Shawn Burton (4) gave it all they had during the Pure Stock main.

The race was between Trevor Quell in his Chevy Vega and Shawn Burton driving a Rabbit. In fact they swapped the lead a few times until Quell finally secured the point and sped off to victory.

And this after he spun and backed into the front straight wall five laps into the main.

After the dust settled he said, “Vegas are pretty rare to come by. Like five laps in, I hit the wall as I got sandwiched between the two of them but came back after that. Got a good start on ’em as they were pretty slow so I got ahead. My car is running good, got a new carburetor on there, bigger tires on the rear end to help out with my gear ratio problem. It’s doing good I’m really happy for it.”

The he gave special thanks to his mother as she’s one of his newest sponsors and helped him get to the races that night. And he expressed his appreciation to sponsors Ed’s Dog House in Carson City, Battle Born Muscle Cars in Mound House and Tires for You in Carson City.
