RATTLESNAKE – SPEED, DUST AND MUD

Rattlesnake had a wild night of hard racing, blinding dust and crazy mud drag racing.

FALLON (June 27) – Rattlesnake had more than an interesting evening on this day. In addition to the car classes Mad Metal Motorsports was on hand to bring its version of mud mayhem to the show.

“We’ve been battling this car a long time,” Fred White said after winning the IMCA main. “I didn’t see them but I could hear them but since the track was slick I didn’t get too crazy.”

Then he thanked Gear and Driveline of Fallon, Advanced Mobil as well as friends and family that support him.

When the green waved on the field Wade Lumsdem took off only to get turned sideways in Turn 1 and collected Chris Neal and Trevor Gurley, who couldn’t avoid him.

With debris in Turn 2 to be picked up the field was ordered to assemble for a complete restart.

Fred White (83) leads the charge with Wade Lumsden (8), Trevor Gurley (03) and Chris Neal (12) right behind him when the IMCA feature began.

Once everyone got back into their proper place the green wavd again. This time White took off and led the charge with Zach Cail and Chris Neal giving chase.

Then a few laps later there was another caution for debris. And just before that Mark Skender pitted after his car lost a spring.

That spring lodged itself on Gonzalez’s car and he stopped so the officials could remove it.

On the next restart White took off again but time it was Cail and Malen Gonzalez giving chase. Later Gurley would spin and bring out another caution.

One problem during the race was dust. A near by storm cell was rapidly drying out the track and the dust was almost blinding at times.

Up front however White maintained his lead. Behind him Cail made a slight mistake and allowed Gonzalez to take second place.

Right after taking the checkered White spun in Turn 1.

After the dust settled Gonzalez described what happened and how crazy it was out there.

Cail for his part said, “It was hit and miss as it was so dusty. But every one was racing pretty clean so we got through it intact and will be ready for next week. But I felt I had a car for him (White).

Then he thanked Bret, his mother, sister Micaela and sponsor CMF Fabrication.

With Tony Taylor absent one thing was for certain, there would be another winner in Hobby Stock this night.

Unfortunately when that main began a storm cell hit the track. While the rain wasn’t too bad the winds picked up huge clouds of dust from the parking lot and blew those across the track.

At times the cars could hardly be seen even from the infield.

On the green Jeff Tuttle was on point but then on the next lap Marchael Bartlett came to a halt on the backstretch. He was able to get his car going again a few minutes later.

Up front Shane Cazel used an inside move to take the lead. Behind him came Tuttle and Dennis Buehn.

Contact send Dave Ausano onto the the infield and brought out a caution. After he got going Ausano headed for the pits.

On the restart Cazel took off while Buehn slipped back into the pack and would have to pit for a flat tire.

Jordan Riley did start the race then pitted and after returning brought out the final caution when his car lost its left front wheel.

Once that was cleaned up the race resumed but this time the top four spread out so their only problem was negotiating the occasional blinding dust cloud.

Back in the pits Cazel said, “That was lots of fun and we did have a decent start. The track was good except for a slick spot in Turn 4.”

Then he thanked sponsors DOB Clothing and Atomic Stone as well as his pit guy, Shaun Ewing.

Rounding out the show were the Dynamic Diesel Mad Metal Mud Drag Racers from Mad Metal Motorsports. There was a short dragstrip, made from very wet deep mud for them.

Just like a drag strip there was a tree with staging and starting lights. At first every pair was in the best two out of three contest.

Once those were completed they retired to the pits and returned after the IMCA feature. Then they ran the finals.

These trucks and SUV’s run all the way from very stock to modified, from mid size to full sized trucks. And some are altered as well.

And the power plants used vary from class to class.

All in all it was a colorful and very different group of vehicles.

Now the track briefly goes dark until the 4th of July when the cars and outlaw karts return. The program begins at 6 p.m. and the town’s fireworks will be set off during the evening.
