AIR RACE RECAP: SATURDAY, SEPT. 19

Racing recap for Saturday, the day when the fast Unlimiteds met again and the oldest jet in the class won its first race.

STEAD AIRPORT: Showdown day for the fastest Unlimiteds, as they vie for the pole position in tomorrow’s Gold race. The winner gets the place closest to the pace jet, which gives them the initial inside line.

When the field was let go Rare Bear briefly head the lead until Strega roared past. After the it was all over but for the shouting as Hoot Gibsoon roared away to the victory.

Behind him Rare Bear and Voodo dueled for the runner up spot. In the end it was Voodo finishing second ahead of the Bear. Behind the fast three were Dennis Sanders in Dreadnouht, Curt Brown in Sawbones and Brian Sanders in Argonaut.

Now the Gold race is all that remains and we’ll know late tomorrow afternoon who is this year’s champion.

Pete Zaccagnino flew the oldest jet in the field to victory in his heat race. The Vampire didn’t lead at first but soon he got past early leader Sean Cushing in his L-39. In the Bronze Jet race Larry Lee in “Triple 7,” won followed by Mike Mangold and Lachian Onslow.

John Parker, in his Thunder Mustang, left everyone in is wake during a Sport heat race. The other Sport winners were David Robinson, Dave Morass and Stan Sutterfield.

In the fast T-6 heat, defending champion Dennis Buehn squeaked to a narrow victory over Nick Macy. The margin was only a few feet at the finish.

In the T-6 Bronze race Chris LeFave won followed by Chad Morgan and Eric Woelbing.

Former IF1 champion Vito Wypraechtiger won his heat race followed by Elliot Sequin and Richard Thom, who is in line to receive the first F1 World Cup. Defending champion Steve Senegal was DQ’d for low flying.

In the other IF1 heat, Jay Jones won followed by Justin Gillen and Michael Mundell.

Tom Aberle was the victor in his Biplane heat as he left everyone in his wake. Jake Stewart and Jeff Rose finished second and third.

In the other Biplane heat race Birch Entriken was the winner followed by Brian Hoover and Anthony Oshinuga.

Besides the B-25 and Breitling Jet Team the fans were treated by Tora, Tora, Tora, a recreating of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The show was full of wild flying and pyro.
