OVAL TRACK PREVIEW FOR 2016

A little tighter focus on racing for this region as we get closer to spring.

(RENO, Feb. 1) It’s Oval Track preview time this week. We are blessed with seven of these tracks in our region.

Most of them have their schedules already while at least two don’t have their full dates out yet.

This year we’ll see two special series. After a two or three year hiatus the Evenson Law Office Ironman Challenge returns.

Right now it’s for the IMCA Modifieds but Evenson is checking to see if Hobby Stocks might be included. There is not website for this currently so those interested need to check his Facebook page, which is listed in the schedules

Over the past years the Pro Stock class virtually disappeared. Well thanks to some concerned and committed individuals a four-race was run last year at the Fernley 95A Speedway.

This year it has expanded and will appear in several tracks. Every race will have a $1,000 to win incentive although I don’t know if that will apply for the two day shows at season’s end.

Once again, they don’t have a website but a Facebook page and that is also listed in their section at the end of this article. In fact not all the tracks have websites so what is available is also listed with their schedules.

Once exception is Diamond Mountain Speedway in Susanville, California. One has to call the Lassen County Fairgrounds and hope someone is in the office. Hopefully the track will solve this problem and interested fans as well as racers can easily find their schedule.

Rattlesnake Raceway, located a few miles east of Downtown Fallon is probably the oldest oval track in this region. They have a varied schedule, are part of the annual Octane Fest and have a good Outlaw Kart class; this is where the next generation of racers earn their racing spurs.

Rattlesnake Raceway

Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon before an IMCA Modified main event.

The track is also the home of Mad Metal Mud Drag Races, which can be wild affairs. And the Northern Nevada Pro Stock series as well as the Ironman series will visit the facility.

Rattlesnake Raceway - Outlaw Karts.

Outlaw Karts are a growing division at Rattlesnake Raceway.

One traditional event is the 4th of July as the track is also the site of the town’s fireworks display. It’s a great night of racing and Pryo for both racers and fans.

Fernley 95A Speedway is the biggest dirt track in the region with big turns and long straights. They too have a varied schedule and will again bring the BCRA Midgets up from the Bay Area as well as hosting the Ironman series, Northern Nevada Pro Stocks and a Dwarf Car regional.

Fernley 95A Speedway

Before every IMCA Main event at Fernley 95A Speedway the racers salute the crowd with a 4-wide pass.

Last year they also introduced a fan favorite, chain races that are wild affairs where the lead car has the motor while the trailing car has the brakes.

And like Rattlesnake the track has Outlaw Karts. They have their own oval and race before the big cars start their hot lap sessions.

Lovelock Speedway is another track hosting the Ironman series. Last year they switched to a Friday evening schedule and their big race is the two-day Frontier Days event, helping celebrate the town’s birth.

Lovelock Speedway

IMCA Modified racers are ready to go before the Frontier Days races at Lovelock Speedway.

Lovelock is the only track having regular appearances of the 360 winged sprint cars.

To the east Winnemucca Regional Raceway has a regular season beginning in March. This track also has several classes that compete on it’s oval and they race on Friday evenings.

Moving south Hawthorne Speedway has come to life again after being dark for several years. In the past it was a high-banked oval that was a favorite of many drivers.

Unfortunately they too haven’t published their schedule but some dates are known and listed. And the track will host the Ironman series as well as the Northern Nevada Pro Stock Association.

Even further south is the Tonopah Speedway. They also will host both the Ironman series as well as the Northern Nevada Pro Stock series. Their big race is the Jim Marsh Classic in early August.

Over in California there are two tracks in this region.

Quincy is the home of American Valley Speedway. This past year they added a whole lot of clay to the track’s surface, which should make this fast track even faster.

American Valley Speedway

The IMCA Modified field is set to start their feature race at American Valley Speedway.

In addition to the IMCA Modifieds, Hobby Stock and Mini Stocks the track has added Northern Sport Mods to its line up. And it has a four race Napa Tour series that alternates dates Diamond Mountain Speedway in Susanville.

The big race is actually on Sunday night when the county fair is happening. And there are several $1,000 to win dates to motivate IMCA Modifieds drivers to race here.

To the northeast is Susanville and the Diamond Mountain Speedway located at the Lassen County Fair Grounds. Unfortunately they don’t seem to have either a website or Facebook page at this time but I did get a partial schedule from American Valley Speedway.

So there you have it, schedules for this year. And in about two months from now the first test and tune sessions will begin, which signals another year of oval track racing in our region.

OTHER RACING NEWS

  • Four riders from this area journeyed south for Round 1 of the Southern Nevada MRAN series. This is desert racing for motorcycles.

The Desert Fox, Dennis Belingheri ended up 2nd overall while Stephen Tichenor was 4th over all despite having to take car of a flat during the event.

Behind them Mike Berenback was ninth overall and PaulZiegler ended up 3rd in the 40+ Expert class.

Congratulations to all of them.
