SANDBOX STIRRED UP BY MOTOCROSS

Beautiful weather set the stage for a great day of motocross racing this weekend.

The Sandbox, or Fernley Lion’s Motocross track, was the scene of the second 775 Spring Classic motocross series. This time the Over The Hill Gang staged the event.

Layne Kolbet, OTHG president said they had 189 riders sign up for practice on Saturday so attendance was probably over 200. On Sunday however there were at least a 100 more on hand to race bringing the total closer to 300.

For one aspiring pro that’s chasing his dream Sunday was a perfect day as he swept three classes.

775 Spring Classic - Jesse Gore wins three classes.

Jesse Gore on his way to sweeping three different classes at the motocross this weekend.

After winning the final 250/450 Pro moto Jesse Gore said, “It was a sweep and I saw them back there the whole moto, those guys are riding great. And I want to thank all of my sponsors, CMS, Gore Plumbing, PBS and everybody that helps me.”

It’s been a while since Gore raced here so he explained what’s been going on.

“I’ve been actually pursuing that national circuit and trying to get my pro card at the moment,” he said. “We’re almost there so I’m excited.”

While he swept three classes winning the 250/450 Pro motos wasn’t a cakewalk. Gore did get the hole shot but was chased by Tucker Larrieu and Chad Heishman.

Lap after lap they stormed around the track with not more than two or three seconds separated them from each other.

In the end however Gore won the day. It was the same story in the 125/250 pro motos but this time he was pursued by Chad Heishman, who also won the Intermediate overall victory although he was the runner up behind Gore.

And Gore also scored a third victory in the 18+ Open but again was chased by Larrieu and Heishman.

After his final 125/250 moto victory Gore was asked about if he would compete in the rest of the spring series.

“I swept all my classes, which feels pretty good and I’ve actually been traveling the country doing pro/am races. That’s where I’ve really to up my game so coming out here and sweeping the weekend gives me a boost of confidence before the California Classic. And I’m really enjoying riding the bike now.”

Next week he’ll head south for the FMF California Classic at Pala Raceway. The events runs from April 7th to 10th and has double Pro Am points as well as points for the King of the West series.

775 Spring Classic MX - Chad Heishman.

Chad Heishman won two classes this weekend.

In both the 125/250 and 250/450 Intermediate classes Heishman scored the victories with Tony Giusti in the runner up position.

775 Spring Classic MX - T.J. Taylor.

T.J. Taylor was another double winner at this week’s motocross races in Fernley.

There were other double winners as well. T.J. Taylor won in 125/250 and 250/450 junior classes while Jeff Simas took the 30+ Expert and Club victories.

Another double winner was Scott Chick as he won both the 30+ Junior and 52+ Expert overall titles.

Several classes had over 20 riders at the gate and that speaks well for the future of the sport in our area. Even the 250/450 races had 25 riders on the starting gate.

Several races had moto long chases even if they weren’t very close at the finish. One came when two riders from 30+ Expert and 38+ Expert had a race long duel.

775 Spring Classic MX - Jeff Simas.

Jeff Simas on his way to winning the Club race. He also was the 30+ Expert winner.

Coming out on top was Jeff Simas, a 30+ racer and 38+ racer Rich Thorwaldson who chased him the entire moto.

Another close battle was in the Women’s Class where veteran Sedanna Losey squared off against high school senior Ashleigh Trapanese.

775 Spring Classic MX - Trapanese and Losey.

Ashleigh Trapanese (62) was chased and challenged in both Women’s motos by a determined Sedanna Losey. In the end Trapanese prevailed to take the overall victory.

When their final moto began Trapanese had the advantage out of the gate but Losey was right on her back fender. In fact Losey may have briefly held the lead before Trapanese took it back.

Lap after lap both women tore around the course but in the end Trapanese scored the overall victory while Losey was second ahead of Ashtyn Shepard.

After congratulating each other after taking the checkered flag both women talked about it.

“I made a couple of little passes, two I think then she got me back so she knew I was there,” Losey said.

Then Trapanese replied, “Oh yea and it was fun.”

“The track good but getting rough,” Losey said. “I might have passed her if I didn’t get tired about lap three so that’s all I had for her.”

Then Trapanese thanked her parents, grandparents, brother, Team Testa and Custom Motor Sports.

After which Losey thanked her husband for his support as well as he brothers that keep her bikes running and Moto Source for supplying any needed parts.

Another second moto that started close was the 125/250 junior race. On point after the gate dropped was T.J. Taylor with Julian Domingo close behind.

This duel went on for a while until first Taylor added a small gap then Domingo ended his race with a crash. This left Taylor with a huge lead over runner up Tyreli Pedotti and third place Tristen Mathisen.

775 Spring Classic MX - Joseph Mitchell.

Joseph Mitchell left everyone in his dust in both Pee Wee motos.

In junior or Pee Wee set the oldest rider was Joseph Mitchell, who ran away with the combined class motos. Hadleigh Kahabka won the 4 to 6 year old class while Rylan Skulason was the 4-Stroke winner.

775 Spring Classic MX - Ryan Skulason, 4-Stroke Pee Wee.

The 4-Stroke Pee Wee winner was Ryan Skulason.

During the day there was a couple of interesting things. In the second set of motos Layne Kolbet and Tucker Larrieu switched bikes. Most people are used to a certain rider being on a particular bike so this was a change.

Another happening was when the water truck got high centered while trying to spray a hill. It took a few minutes to get the front loader out to push the water truck over the top of that hill.

775 Spring Classic MX - Water truck getting some help.

After getting high centered the water truck needed a bit of a push to get off the hill it was stuck on.

In two weeks the Old Timers Nationals will be at the track. After hearing that two 80-year-olds will compete Old Timer President Jeff McCollum got an older bike and for the first time in years took to the track to compete in a couple of classes.

775 Spring Classic MX - Jeff McCollum returns to action.

Finding out there were two 80-year-olds coming to compete in the Old Timer’s National event was enough to get Jeff McCollum back on track after years of being on the sidelines.

As usual some riders went down but usually either only egos or bodies are bruised and the fallen got up and carried on. However two of them did need medical attention and while no one was transported they probably visited a hospital later in the day for a check up and treatment.

The next round in the series will be on April 9-10 at Winnemucca while Old Timer’s National event is on April 16-17.
