RACING PREVIEW: MAY 26 TO 29

The biggest racing weekend of the year is upon us and almost every professional series will be in action.

Racing preview for this weekend has a variety of events to see or watch. Our region will see a trio of two-day shows in three very different racing disciplines.

Down in Hawthorne the Valley Off Road Association (VORRA) has a 225-mile desert race. Friday will be check-in with an additional check-in Saturday along with pre-running the course and the race itself will be on Sunday.

Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon also has a two-day show, Saturday and Sunday.

On both days the Outlaw Karts have a slightly different schedule. The driver’s meeting is at 1:30 p.m. then the heat races begin at 2 p.m. Beginner and Box Stock drivers will run their mains beginning at 4 p.m. with the 250 and 500cc karts running their heats at 4:30 p.m.

Around 6 p.m. is when the cars begin to race their heats and during the intermission the 250 and 500 Outlaw Karts will run their mains before the cars have their feature races.

Closer to home the Reno Chapter of the Over The Hill Gang stages the traditional round of the OTHG Nationals at the Fernley Lion’s Motocross Track, or the Sand Box as it is known.

Vet or qualified riders will have a practice session from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Friday

On Saturday and Sunday motos should begin around 9:15 a.m. Riders not in the vet classes can join the support races that will be run both days.

It’s the last chance for motocross riders to race at the Sandbox before the summer break and until the fall series begins.

Here at home there is a car show at Rancho San Rafael from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday. While the Classic Chevys of Reno is sponsoring the event all makes and models are welcome.

The event is to help support the Veteran’s Guest House. It’s a place where families of veterans undergoing treatment at the VA Hospital can stay.

Over in the electronic land TV and Internet will have a full menu of racing action.

Things begin at 5 a.m. Thursday, on NBC Sports, as the Formula One teams begin practice for the Monaco Grand Prix. This race is staged on a street course hardly changed since it was first Grand Prix in the late 1920’s.

At 2:30 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has practice for the NASCAR Xfinity series from Charlotte. Then at 4 p.m. CBS airs a Australian V-8 Supercar event from Perth.

Friday is kind of a dead day with almost nothing but repeats happening although NBC Sports, at 10 a.m., will have Carb Day or the last practice before the Indy 500.

Over on www.fanschoice.tv you can see videos of last week’s AMA flat track races on the Sacramento Mile. And if motocross is your thing, then go to www.promotocross.com where all four pro motos from last week’s pro races at Hangtown can be watched.

Formula One qualifying, starting at 5 a.m. on NBC Sports gets Saturday going. For NASCAR fans Fox Sports 1, at 11 a.m. broadcasts the Xfinity race from Charlotte.

This is followed at 2:30 p.m. when Fox broadcasts the Coke 600 from Charlotte. It’s NASCAR’s longest race of the season and these drivers go 600 miles on a one and a half mile track.

For some alternatives on Sunday look no further than CBS and NBC Sports.

CBS Sports gets things rolling at 2 p.m. with FIM Motocross followed at 3 p.m. by Lucas Oil Offroad racing.

NBC Sports starts at 2 p.m. as they air delayed broadcast of the Mint 400 followed at 4 p.m. with AMA racing from Sacramento then at 6 p.m. as they show AMA motocross racing from San Bernardino.

Then at 8 p.m. the network will repeat the Grand Prix of Monaco.

Over on the Internet www.fanschoice.tv has three short track races starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Then on Sunday at 9 a.m. they will air the AMA Pro Flat Track races from the Springfield Mile followed at 3 p.m. by the NWAAS race from Utica-Rome Speedway.

All in all it’s going to be a jammed packed weekend for race fans. And remember try and get out to one of the live events as it not only supports our local tracks but there is nothing like seeing a race in person.

And finally on Wednesday drag racing legend Shirley Muldowney had surgery to remove a lung due to a tumor in it. At last report the operation went well for the 75-year-old and she is recovering.
