RATTLESNAKE RACEWAY: MEMORIAL WEEKEND RACING

Memorial Day weekend is the biggest racing weekend of the year and a local track had two nights of action.

FALLON (May 28) – Rattlesnake Raceway hosted a two-day show this Memorial Day weekend. It was two evenings of action for short track fans.

After Saturday’s IMCA feature Cory Sample, after winning his first main event win here for the season, said, “The track was pretty one-lane, pretty tricky and the infield part of the track is starting to come out onto the racing surface so it was making it real slick and hard to get a hold of the race track. It definitely a challenge, that’s for sure.

Then he thanked his father for his support and help..

It took two attempts to get the 20-car field on its way but when racing began Mark Skender wsa on point followed by Mike White and Sample.

After being second for a few laps Sample made his move and took the lead just before a spin in Turn 4 brought the first caution.

On the green Sample took off followed by Joel Meyers, Sender and Trevor Gurley. Soon after, on lap 17, that another caution flew after Robert Brumit hit the way ending his night.

It would take three attempts to get past the 17th lap due to spins after every restart. Finally the field took the green and Sample took off followed by Shawn Natenstedt and Shawn LaRocque.

While there was another spin the driver recovered quickly enough that a caution wasn’t needed.

After the heat races Jeff Olschowka found out he needed to change motors. After starting in the back he carved his way through the pack and ended up fourth.

Up front LaRocque had a firm grip on fourth place, where he finished behind runner up Natenstedt. But there would be no stopping Sample on this night.

Rattlesnake Raceway: IMCA winner Cory Sample.

Cory Sample streaks through the dust to win Saturday’s IMCA main. On Sunday he repeated the feat with another victory.

On Sunday night Sample doubled down and won his second IMCA main in as many days. This time Olschowka was the runner up ahead of Myers and Natenstedt.

The craziest race of the night was the Hobby Stock main. When the 21-car field started Mikki Beauchat was on point.

Little did she or anyone know the race would be a caution fest as seven times the yellow would slow things. After the second caution on lap 3, Beauchat was still in the lead followed by Edwin Cedeno Bob Vaden and a charging David Ausano.

After the next restart Ausano jumped into third and the top three began to gap the field. In fact five laps later the lead trio was catching the slowest cars.

The next caution was on lap 10 but right after the race restarted there was another caution as a car lost its nose piece on the back stretch.

By now Ausano had the leaders in his sights and was after them as soon as racing resumed. In the final laps he zoomed into the lead and scored the victory followed by Cody Morris and Beuchat.

Rattlesnake Raceway: Hobby Stock Winner, David Ausano (63).

Saturday’s Hobby Stock winner Davis Ausano (63) takes the checkered flag just before he would have lapped the car of Paul Shamlin (0).

In Sunday’s race Mikki Beuchat topped the Hobby Stocks with Vaden coming home second ahead of Cody Morris and Michael Bartlet.

On this night six sprint cars showed up and would get a main of their own. On the green Bob Cooney took the point.

A few laps later there was a caution when the car of Robert Cooney lost its left front wheel and tire.

On the restart their was contact between Bob Cooney’s car and another car. The impact broke Cooney’s steering and he wound up on the Turn 1 infield.

But in the scramble young Trey Walters saw his change and charged into the lead. From that point it was his race.

Rattlesnake Raceway: Sprint winner Trey Walters (1w)

Trey Walters (1w) heads for the checkered flag and the Sprint Car win with Joe Hood chasing him.

“Was just patient, waiting for a little bit,” he said after wards. “I had to really watch it and make sure I didn’t get past again. The track was pretty good, it dried off a little bit so you had to really slow down and drive the car.”

Then he thanked his parents and D&S Towing.

In Sunday’s Sprint Car main Bob Cooney was the winner with Joe Hood second and Dave Steverson taking third.

On Saturday there were only three Gen-X cars. After the green it appeared that Jim Paulk in his Mustang owned the race.

Rattlesnake Raceway: Gen-X Chris Jimenez (44) wins.

Chris Jimenez takes the checkered flag as he zooms past the stricken car of Jim Paulk.

That is until the final lap when he slowed handing the victory to Chris Jimenez with Stephanie Hornback taking second. In Sunday’s main Jimenez and Hornback also were one-two as Paulk was unable to start.

The closest race of the night on Saturday was in the Super Stock 4 main. On the green Galen Reese took off but soon was being challenged by Steven Crook Sr. driving his son’s car.

Lap after lap their were either side-by-side or nose to tail. Each time as they passed the finish line one or the other was just ahead of the other.

On the final lap Crook has the outside line and coming to the flag he was just enough ahead to score the victory.

Rattlesnake Raceway: SSR winner Steven Crook Sr. (34).

The closest race Saturday was the Super Stock 4 main. Here Steven Crook Sr., driving his son’s car, will edge Galen Reese (11) as they head for the checkered flag.

On Sunday Reese returned the favor by winning that main while Crook was second.

This season the Rattlesnake Outlaw Karts has really grown in numbers as more youngsters are getting into this type of racing. Not to be outdone older kids and adults are stepping into the fast 250cc and 500cc karts.

With the new schedule both the Beginners and Box Stock racers run their mains before the cars get going.

It took a couple of attempts to get the Box Stock main going and while there was only one caution these young drivers tore around the small oval inside the big track.

Rattlesnake Raceway: Box Stock winner, Peyton Steinfeld (43).

Peyton Steinfeld (43) won Saturday’s Box Stock main but was chased by Gauge Felzek.

In the end Peyton Steinfeld won followed by Gauge Felzke and Robert McBroome. In Sunday’s race the finishing order was Robert McBroome, Tommy Sorensen and Steinfeld.

Now the Beginner’s class is the biggest one for the Outlaw Karts. This speaks well for the future as well as these are the kids that, once they are older, we’ll probably see on the big track.

Rattlesnake Raceway: Beginner winner Jaden Allec.

Jaden Allec (88) and Mallory Evenson (11) wait for a restart during the Beginner main. Both would finish in that order as Allec won the race.

Young Jaden Allec won Saturday’s Beginner main followed by Mallory Evenson and Kaden Detomasi. Then on Sunday Kaitlyn McLeod was the Beginner winner followed again by Mallory Evenson and Detomasi.

In these two classes both the boys and girls are giving good accounts of themselves.

The big karts and their more experienced drivers race during intermission for the car part of the night.

On Saturday the 250 winner was Jayden Hopper followed by Blake Rauscher and Joe Owen. Then on Sunday Hopper made it a double with Rauscher and Owen following.

Rattlesnake Raceway: 250cc winner Jayden Hopper.

Jayden Hopper won the 250cc Outlaw main on Saturday.

The 50cc0 winner on Saturday was Retty Wickland with Jay McLeod and Axel Smith taking the next two places. The on Sunday Chris Annas was the winner followed by Jonah Young in a kart he shares with Gary Owen while McLeod finished third.

Rattlesnake Raceway: 500cc winner Chris Annas.

The 500cc winner Saturday was Chris Annas.

The Outlaw Karts will return to action along with the cars in two weeks during the annual Octane Fest.
