SILVER STATE MOTOCLIMB AT WILD WEST

A new event was held this weekend, first time in many years there was a hill climb.

MUSTANG (Jun 4) – The Silver State Motoclimb made its initial appearance this weekend at the Wild West Motorsports Park located east of Sparks. The facility carved out a hill that rose 400 feet above the infield and combined both the hill and some motocross type turns in it.

A rider’s fastest time up the hill or longest run gave them their finishing positions. For one Concord, California rider it was a great day as he scored victories in two classes.

“We’ve got two for two today so we’re doing pretty good, Logan Mead said after the first half of the program ended. “They had a pro class this moring so we got to break the hill with bikes we usually play rider on and they just had the 700 exhibition so I was able to win both of those.

“We go all over the United States but this is more of a unique set up here as it incorporates a little bit of motocross. We’ve got a 180 turn out of the start into a couple of leges, a couple of jumps and I think its good as it caters to my style as I like more of a motocross type of hill. And it’s got good potential for sure.

Then he thanked Team Unlimited, Moose Racing, MX Graphics, IRC and the House of Horsepower.

The 700 class, which uses extended swing arms and frames ended the first half of the runs. Mead’s first run up the hill was his best at 24.638 and set the mark for the class.

Mead also topped the Muck Daddy Pro Factory Class with a time of 25.721 and was third in the Trophy Bike Class.

First up the hill was fellow Californian Joe Shipman, who posted a time of 24.638 seconds. Close but still not enough to beat Mead.

Joe Shipman gets some air as he heads for second place in the 700 Pro Class.

After the dust settled he said, “It’s really a fun hill, pretty short but it’s really intense so you have got to put the hammer down to leave a good time. In order to get a good time the whole hill counts so you have to attack it from the very beginning. You can make up a lot of time on the bottom just as much as you can lose it.”

Then he thanked sponsors Motomart at Carnegie, Flannigan Machine Shop, Allan’s Cycle Works, and the San Joaquin Hay Growers.

Later Shipman won the Trophy Bike Classs and was third behind Bronson Foianini in the Muck Daddy Pro Factory Class.

Silver State Motoclimb - Emily Sandahl, Stock 250.

Emily Sandahl had a bit of trouble in the Stock 250 class.

Not everybody made it up the hill. Many times it seemed like too little speed at the bottom and the bike would stall out.

Silver State Motoclimb - Gabriel Gasper, 250 Extended.

Gabriel Gaspar ran into problems and couldn’t make it up the hill on his 250 extended bike.

Some did come close but one woman made it. That was Katrina Bauchou from Fremont, riding in the Stock 250cc class posted a time of 35.023 for her best run.

Silver State Motoclimb - Hanna Sandahl, Stock 250 class.

Hannah Sandahl almost made it to the top but just fell short.

There were several local riders competing and Reno resident Jeff Robinson actually won the Stock 251-650cc Class.

Another former desert racer now enjoying hil climbing was Fernley’s Tate Morehead. He competed in two classes posting 7th place in the Pro 700cc with a time of 28.475 and fifth in the Pro Factory Stock Class with a time of 31.228.

Asked about his day Morhead said, “It was a very, very nice hill but I wasn’t sure what it was going to be like. I got here they did a great job on the hill, it was technical, challenging especially this left-hander right after out of the starting gate. That was pretty tough to negotiate especially as stretched out and extended as I had my bike, but we made her through. Once you make the first run and get over the top you can kind of hang it out on your second one.”

Morehead explained he’s only been hill climbing for about a year but traveled with the NAHA circuit last year.

“I made three of their events, running primarily mostly amateur stuff and this year I went to Washington. It was my first time trying to qualify with the pros. I missed it but it was a good experience,” he said.

Then he thanked the group he is with Wing Nut Motorsports, Custom Pump Services in Emmett, Idaho, Factory MRC and Motosource of Reno.

While the lower half was a straight up run for the pros it was altered for the stock and amateur classes. There were a series of gates, much like in ski racing, that sent riders up a slightly zig-zag course.

Those classes that ran the full 400 feet then crossed the off road track and headed up another section where they negotiated some jumps. The youngest riders and women only had to reach the off road track.

There was a crew on both sections of the hill to assist any rider not completing their sections. And depending on the class they were very busy at times.

While it was supposed to be very hot a cloud cover and  nice cooling breeze helped make things manageable.

After the first set of runs promoter Matt Musgrove, who heads Elevated Action Sports commented on the event.

“So far so good, have a lot of great people helping out today, taking a lot of the work on, the venue’s awesome and Wild West Motorsports Park is incredible,” he said. “Seems like the fans like it, the racing’s been pretty competitive on the track we prepared for them and we’re having a good time today. The cloud cover kept us a little cooler.”

Earlier he acknowledged that he and other people spent eight hours rolling rocks off the steepest part of the course to make it better.

Hopefully next year there will be the second annual Silver State Motoclimb.

  1. Tyler Seehuetter /

Tyler Seehuetter was actually the winner of the 251-650cc class. Jeff Robinson and I shared our pit area, and we both would agree that his time was not 22.278 seconds. That would have been the fastest time of the day!

Sorry about that mistake. I was going off the results I was sent. If there was an error then it’s on
me. Will try to do better next time around.
