AIR RACE UPDATE: SUNDAY, SEPT. 18

STEAD – Air Race Update will be a short one tonight. The races ended on an upbeat with a popular pilot flying to his seventh Unlimited Championship.

National Championship Air Races: Hinton about to start race.

Steven Hinton heads out to race in the Unlimited Gold.

Still it was an interesting day with a few maydays but with only slight injury. Well slight unless you were an airplane then it was a a bit more serious.

Topping the list is Steven Hinton, who not only won his race but got to play a very different role; pace plane pilot.

National Championship Air Races: Steven Hinton and trophy.

Steven Hinton hoists the Unlimited Championship Trophy. Today he won his seventh Gold title.

While many races were runaways one wasn’t. In fact it was the closest race seen for that class in many years and wasn’t settled until the fun from Pylon 9 to the Home Pylon.

And the Flying Blue Angels again put on a stellar show full of smoke, blazing speed, precision flying and a heck of a lot of noise when required.

And again the event week was blessed with weather that just got better as the days went on. There was a wind that came up on Sunday but it really wasn’t too bad and the temperature was around 90, which makes for faster flying.

National Championship Air Races: Formula One hanger.

Air Race Sunday begins in the Formula One hanger just as the sun comes up.

Sunday began early in the Formula One hanger and proceeded to end after many races on the tarmac after the Unlimited Gold race.

Tomorrow I’ll have the full report with more photos and the full results. But tonight, well I’m winding down and hope all of you are as well.

If you missed the Air Races this year plan on coming to Reno next year. The races will run September 13 to 17 although qualifying  begins on the 11th. It’s a great time to be in Reno and if you get here on the weekend before everything gets going be sure to plan on an early up and go see the Balloon Races.

After 4 fun days at the Air Races, I was showering (everyday!!) and had the local news on. Some A–hole reporter said “Yes, I was out there during the week to beat the crowds”. What a fuggin’ idiot!!

Glad you were out there Emil and yes there are some idiots there as well, especially our local
media types. That about the only time they ever see let along get to a race.
