WILD HORSE HARE SCRAMBLES: CRAZY DAY

The latest round of the MRANN fall series was very different than anyone expected.

TOULON (Sept 25.) – Wild Horse Hare Scrambles is the second race in this year’s fall series for MRANN. The host club was Western States Racing Association and AMA District 36. Great weather and a large rider count promised an epic day for racing.

And it was, until something happened on the second loop. But in the end two riders battled each other for the entire 100 miles to determine the lead and their duel was settled in the final five miles to the finish.

MRANN: Dan Caparelli, 2nd OA Wild Horse HS

Dan Caparelli thought he had won the race but circumstances altered the finish.

After having some water and getting his breath overall winner Dan Capparelli said, “That race was awesome, it was fun, I rode really smooth today, consistent and I didn’t make any mistakes.”

Then he thanked Fly, Reno KTM, Fast Flex, Northwest Mine Supply, Recluse and of course his supportive wife.

Next to reach the finish was Jason Hurst, who thought he was second overall.

MRANN: Jason Hurst, 1st OA, Wild Horse.

Jason Hurst heads for alternate gas during his first loop. He would wind up first overall.

“Well I missed the check over here (By the pit area.), missed the arrows so Vaughn got by me, tried to battle with him but it was too dusty. Then all of a sudden he crashed and was under his bike so I stopped and helped him get up but he was hurt pretty bad. Then I took off and no one passed me until the last lap right there, probably like the last five miles, I just had nothing left.”

Then he thanked his entire family, Haeseker Racing Engines, Roseville Yamaha, Pro Taper, NSR, No Toil and Gaerne Boots.

MRANN: Experts start.

The Expert riders take off to start the Wild Horse Hare Scrambles.

When the race started over 100 riders lined up in their respective places. As usual the Experts launched first, then after the dust cleared it was the Amateur’s then the Novice riders took off.

MRANN: Amateurs start.

The Amateurs take off and are about to pass a very brave course official.

Each line had to wait as the starting riders, except for those in front, had to negotiate a blinding cloud of dust.

MRANN: Novice start.

Finally, after the dust had cleared the Novice riders were set on their way.

The course itself was comprised of two loops to make one 50-mile lap. The first was 30-miles long and led everyone close to the pits where alternate gas was, for those needing a fill up and sending them through a checkpoint.

At each check point a colored marker is used on a card taped to the rider’s fender. Once the card is marked the rider takes off.

But when the second lap began, somehow there was either confusion or a misunderstanding at a checkpoint. The crew there was supposed to send the riders one way but the competitors were actually going in both directions.

That’s when the wheels fell off the wagon.

This not only caused a lot of confusion out on the course, including some riders going backwards on one of the loops but caused much confusion further along.

Each complete loop ends at a scoring chute where a rider’s transponder signal their overall place. But after the first 50 miles things started getting completely out of order. Apparently even some Novice riders went through the second time, which ended their race, before the faster Experts.

Now the officials knew something was very wrong so they huddled and after a discussion decided to disallow the second lap as the first one was correct. The meant that riders on the course were racing the full distance not knowing what had happened.

At the end of the first loop Hurst was in the lead so he was credited with the win while Capparelli wound up second.

Complicating things were two factors. First, since this was a combined race some riders were actually ranked in the District 36 standings while MRANN riders were in another set of standings.

It was also a money race so people would get less than they imagined after completing both loops. Needless to say not all riders were happy with what happened.

A rider doing both loops was actually out there for about four hours.

MRANN: Dennis Belingheri

Dennis Belingheri was one of those riders that completed all 100 miles but he was down in the standings due to his first lap.

When Dennis Belingheri came in he was a bit frustrated and felt the start was a bit of a mess. After Beth Legenbauer completed her two laps and was told what happened she simply said, “well that sucks.”

While last year’s race ran smoothly and this year’s didn’t there is sure to be some examining as the clubs and officials work to make sure this type of thing doesn’t happen next year.

• On Saturday the classes made up of youngsters and the Beginning Women ran their races on a shortened course. The top 10 in those classes that had that many riders are listed in the results.

As far as the complete results, at the time this was published this reporter did not know where they were posted. I wish to express my thanks to Brandon Henning and Michelle Danson for helping me get Sunday’s overall finish order.

My family has been racing for 7 full seasons now. Both Cross Country and Enduro for most of that. This was BY FAR the WORST run event we have ever attended. Not a single race got off on time, in fact the AA/A Youth race on Saturday was over 1 hour late. Sunday, you had racers that went out on the second loop racing at pace for 2+hours and none of it counted. What if a racer would have gotten hurt? In fact, after they called the race at lap 1, the VERY FEW sweepers that were helping were sitting in the pits and taking down course. How about we get out there and corral racers back and SWEEP the course? Unbelievable!

Lastly, you had racers quit after lap 1 (before it was called) that finished ahead of racers that maned-up and went out to ride the full 100 miles. How is that right?

It’s too bad too because this race venue is a true test of stamina and perseverance. Too bad WSRA had to get in the way. . .

Sorry but I don’t know. Since I need quotes I usually hang close to the finish
during the second moto and try to get start photos in the first motos.
