MOTOCROSS ROCKS THE SANDBOX

Reporter’s Note: Heading into the final events of the racing season I’m going to try something new, a gallery at the end of the article. Please let me know if you like it.

FERNLEY (Oct. 23) – Motocross season is heading for its final event and the fourth round of this year’s 775 MX Classic series set up shop in Fernley this weekend. The track is the Fernley-Wadsworth Motocross Track otherwise known as the “Sandbox” or “The Fern.”

And like the last round many riders showed up to compete in one or more of the 19 motos it took to include everyone. Since there were no pro riders that showed up the top classes were the Intermediate ones.

When the second 250/450 Intermediate moto began Michael Jepsen was on point but closing in was Dylan Galliett. It only took a lap for Galliett to take the lead and roar off to the victory.

“I didn’t get the best start but I pulled through and worked my way up to first,” he said after taking the checkered flag.

Then he thanked his parents for their support. And he noted that taking second in the first moto but winning this one would give him the overall ahead of Jepsen.

Four races later, in the second 18+ moto, he once again didn’t get the best start and was third out of the gate. Up front Jepsen was on point with Justin Lydlick holding down second.

A couple of laps into the moto Galliett used an outside pass to get around Jepsen, who faded to fifth. Bryce Garrison too over second with Lydlick now in third.

At the end Galliett was a double winner with victories in two classes.

A bit later Lydlick scored an overall victory of his own in the 2-Stroke Open class, which was combined with the Schoolboy class.

T.J. Taylor grabbed the lead at the start for the Schoolboy part and held it until he scored the victory. It was his first for the day.

At the end of their combined race Lydlick said, “It was good, Trent Cocking, he’s a good friend of mine, he’s ripping pretty good so it was hard to get a hole shot on him and stay ahead.

Then the thanked his parents, RMS as well as his friends and family that support him.

A little later Cocking won the 250/450 Junior overall victory.

Taylor didn’t have too much time to celebrate as he headed off to take his place in the 125/250 Beginner, Division II lint up.

Once again there were so many of these riders their class was divided in two. Division I has 23 riders in the full gate while Division II only had 15.

These young riders hold the promise of bigger and better motocross races in our area.

After taking his second victory of the day Division II, and clinching the overall, Taylor said, “I did good, just tried to keep my pace, ride smooth, not fall down and came out with the wins. The track has some square edges and it’s not really the sand but the bumps and stuff that you’ve just got to bore through it and stay smooth.”

Then the thanked his parents, Testa Motorsports, Yamaha Blue Crew, FMF, Bell, Pro Taper, X-Brand, Dunlop as well as other he couldn’t remember.

When Division I began its second moto Parker Miller was on point but being chased by Drew Nelson. In back of them there was a six-way fight for third.

As the laps wound down Miller pulled away leaving Nelson running solo in second. Behind him Kyle Zimmer held third followed by Cole Jackson.

One close finish came in the 65cc Open second moto. At the start K.C. Clinton was on point but giving chase was Chase Cannizzaro.

Lap after lap they tore around the track and almost finished side-by-side at the end. They almost duplicated this feat in the 65cc Junior second moto but Cannizzaro went down although he still finished a distant second place.

Moving to the youngest racers the winners were Pierson Potratz, Gaven Giomi, Rowdy Richardson and Sam McCord, who all won in their respective divisions. Another good sign as to the future of the sport is that there were four divisions of these youngest riders.

Sam McCord also scored a second overall in 65cc Intermediate while Rogen Hill was the 65cc Beginner winner.

Another double winner that will probably be moving up in the near future was Danny Hillyer, who scored victories in the 85cc Open and 85cc Supermini races.

There were nine women racers this time and each time Ashleigh Trapanese had to work her way to the front for the victory. Sedanna Losey was second overall followed by Ashtyn Shepard and Shami Potratz.

After taking the checkered flag Trapanese said, “I had to make my way around everyone, find the smooth lines and just ride smart. The track is rough for sure but it’s fun and I’m holding up pretty good.”

Then she thanked her parents, grand parents, Big Valley Honda and her friends.

On this day there were two Club motos rather than the usual one. The winner was Tony Fagundes, who also won the 45+ Expert overall as well.

Finally the day’s racing ended with the most senior riders having their second moto. On the start Scott Chick, the only 52+ Expert rider led the charge followed by Chris Over and Lonnie Madsen, who ride in the 52+ Junior division.

After taking the final checkered flag of the day Chick said, “The race was really good today, I’m tired though as it was bumpy.”

Then he thanked his sons Scotty and Michael for their help.

While several riders went down most injuries were minor but on Saturday one rider did earn an ambulance ride to be checked out. When this was published that rider’s condition was not known.

Now everyone gets a couple of weeks off before the series ends at the Livfast Exit 28 track on November 6. But for some they’ll be going over the hill to race Oatfield MX track for the first round of the MotoPro Graphics Triple Crown.

Enjoyed the article. I raced the 19th moto. A cruel joke to place the old guys in last moto. It was rough but at 61, I enjoyed the challenge. I don’t think I hit the front brake once in the braking bumps. Just let my suspension do it’s job and hang on for all I was worth. Lonnie and I were running 1st and 2nd with all the 45 Jr’s and one 52 expert behind us. A massive tank slapper in the breaking bumps 3/4 into the first lap sent him flying out of the track. I took over first and took it down a notch thinking Lonnie was toast. Scott Chick caught me and to my surprise, Lonnie too. I was happy to finish with a trophy. Super fun. BYW, my last name is Ober.

      I’ll double check that. Thanks.

Oops! Typo. Should be “braking bumps” and “BTW”. I suppose “breaking bumps is accurate too.

  4. Jen Clinton /

Great article! Thanks for the coverage. Minor error though, The photo of KC Clinton is not him. He’s #211 on a KTM.

Oops sorry. Have to check that.
