MRANN: SHOWDOWN AT BOTTLE CREEK

The season ending event for MRANN was held under almost perfect weather and had a good field of competitors.

BOTTLE CREEK, NV (Nov. 13) – MRANN had its final race and showdown in an area between Winnemucca and Imlay at Bottle Creek Road. The race was hosted by the Mason Valley Dirt Squirts and was named the Stars and Bars Hare Scramble.

MRANN: Stars and Bars Winner.

Joe Wasson takes the checkered flag after winning the final MRANN race of the year.

When the dust settled a visiting rider was first through the timing chute.

“I got a really good start and I just kind of held it there and was charging hard all day,” Joe Wasson from Mountain Home, Idaho said after his finish. “Felt really smooth and was riding really well. The course was awesome, flowed really well and was great.”

Then he thanked his wife for her support as well as Cycle City of Mountain Home, TVT, Chidester Transport, Dragon Goggles, GPR and everybody else that helps me out.

As usual the big bikes lined up in three lines for Expert, Amateur and Novice. First off the line were the experts.

This time around they used a shotgun start. Riders would stand behind their bikes and when a shotgun was fired they jumped on, kicked their rides to life and took off across a dry lakebed.

MRANN: Sellers and starting gun.

Ed Sellers with his “starting gun,” ready to send the racers off.

The course was 45-miles in length and any rider that wanted to be counted as a finisher had to complete one lap.

After all three lines were sent on their way there were 76 riders that started the event.

Up front Wasson had a bit of a hiccup when he turned around after going part way up the waterfall. Thought he missed a turn off but the course worker told him to go all the way to the top.

At the end he was turning laps around 1 hour and 15 minutes and had a six-minute lead over second placed Dennis Belingheri. There overall times were; Wasson 2:31:173 to Belingheri’s 2:37:50.566.

MRANN: 2nd Overall

Dennis Belingheri was second overall and probably clinched the overall MRANN points championship.

The Desert Fox as he’s known had a lot riding on this race. A good finish would probably clinch this year’s overall points championship.

So he rode steady, was running solo in second and also finished the race about three minutes ahead of third place Willy Heiss.

After taking the checkered flag Belingheri said, “It was super fun, I really thought the dry lake bed was fun just because it’s fast. I would really hate to be back in the dust, overall it was a good day for racing, nice weather, good course, a lot of rocky uphill waterfall things. I just kind of cruised as I knew how to finish and just had a lot of fun.”

Then he thanked his wife, Rimbenders, Steve Tichenor and his wife for pitting.

His next even will bte the Baja 1000 this coming weekend. It’s a race he’s never done before and pre running starts this week so he left for Mexico on Monday after the race.

When the second lap began Willy Heiss was third followed by Wyatt Brittner, Drew Chattin, Austin Wilson, Titan McKibben and Josh Wilson.

Heiss hung on and finished third a little over a minute ahead of Drew Chattin, who was almost six minutes ahead of Wilson. Unfortunately Brittner had problems so was only credited with completing one lap.

After taking the checkered flag Heiss said, “Man that was great, what a fun track a lot of good stuff out there. The uphill waterfall was awesome, really technical and a lot of fun. I got about sixth or seventh on the start so I had to catch a couple of guys then before we came in for the first pit I passed Tyler and then we pretty much stayed in clean air for the rest of the race.”

Then he thanked Concours Body Shop, RMS, CMS for an awesome bike, my wife, the Trailblazers team.

Out of the 76 that started their charge across the dry lake bed six never finished the race due to one thing or another. And only 36 riders actually completed both laps.

The first amateur to finished the entire race was Bryce Walker with an an elapsed time of 2:55:30:806.

” I crashed once,” he said. “It wasn’t a big crash and other than that it was a great race. No complaints what so ever,it wasn’t whooped out, new canyon and super stoked with the club setting it up and marked it very good.

Then he thanked Ed McCoy for the suspension work on the bike and John Stringer his mechanic.

Keeping the honor of the most senior riders, Chris Loer finished 15th overall in the Over 60 Expert class with an elapsed time of 3:00:39.848.

Dominic Gabiola from Winnemucca was the first Novice to complete both laps with an elapsed time of 3:19:44.748.

Asked about the race he said, “The race was good but I ride the other way quite a bit. I like the technical part of the course and liked the waterfall, it was a good time and everything went good.”

Then he gave thanks to his buddy Jarret Johnson and his wife Jayme.

During the day some riders went but no one had to be transported although a couple will need to be checked out after the event.

Now the season has finally ended on a positive note. While some will be heading for Baja others will ride and enjoy the fall and winter. This year’s awards banquet is scheduled for January 14 and tickets can be purchased at RMS.
