ARENACROSS ROCKs LIVESTOCK EVENTS CENTER

Indoor motocross returns after several years and puts on three days of racing.

RENO (March 24/25) – After an absence of three years the Amsoil Arenacross returned to the Reno Livestock Center this weekend. Even after all this time this is the largest venue on the circuit as they mainly race in Hockey size arenas.

The major class, the AX 250 had a tight points race going into the two-day show with Jace Owen and Gavin Faith being tied with the advantage going to the latter. Both shows were going to slightly shake up the run for the chanpionship .

The AX 250 format is like motocross where two main events are run and the combined finishes determine a rider’s standings. All the other classes run a single main event.

There is also a “Head to Head,” elimination contest that is worth a championship point for the winner.

When the gate dropped for Friday’s first AX 250 main Gavin Faith took off with Chris Blose in hot pursuit. Behind them Jace Owen didn’t have such a good start and ended up fourth in that first race.

In both AX250 mains Chris Blose (2) chased Gavin Faith (1) for the victories. They were the race of the night.

Up front however Faith and Blose were putting on the race of the night as they both were close together while racing through the tight turns and various sections of the course. In the end they ended up one-two.

Later they faced off again and Faith repeated his good start with Blose not far behind. Once again they thrilled the crowd by tearing around the course with no more than about two seconds of time between them.

Gavin Faith on his way to winning both races Friday night.

Their finish did shake up the points a bit.

With only eight gates at the start there were usually two lines behind the gate. Of course those on the front row had the advantage or so it seemed.

The only two locals in the AX Lites field were Sparks rider Austin Walton, who would end up second for the night. The other riders was Chad Heishman, who used a rocket charge from the second row in the LCQ to earn transfer spot in the main.

Ryan Breece won Friday’s AX Lite main event.

When the gate dropped for the Lites main Ryan Breece flat left everyone in his dust. Walton tried but no one was gong to touch the Idaho rider on this night.

There were two supporting races and two younger riders began to make their mark on the weekend.

Gannon Lawson won scored a double when he won Friday and Saturday’s Pee Wee main.

In the 50cc 4 to 8 class Gannon Lawson was untouchable as he rocketed away from the field. The same could be said for Manuel Moreno has he completely dominated the Supermini main.

After a day to get used to the altitude and dirt at the LEC things changed for the finishers on Saturday.

When the gate dropped for the first 250AX main Gavin Faith once again led the charge but only briefly. Soon Jace Owen swept past him and set sail for the victory.

Jace Owen closes in on leader Gavin Faith (1) and would soon take the point. Owen won both the AX 250 mains Saturday night.

Behind him Faith and Chris Blose ended up second and third ahead of fourth place Daniel Herriein.

When their second main began once again it was Faith on point with Owen right behind him and looking for the lead with Blose a solid third.

Jace Owen won both AX 250 mains on Saturday night.

Finally Owen used a different combination growing through the second straight section to take the lead and rocket away to claim the victory followed by Faith and Bloss.

Just like Friday, Faith won the Head 2 Head so he picked up another point. Heading into next week’s event Faith now has 104 points while Owen has 97 and Blose stands at 93.

When the gate dropped on the AX Lites main Ryan Breece took off with Hunter Sayles giving chase. Soon Sayles got the better line, took the point and was able to hold it to the end.

Amsoil Arenacross

Hunter Sayles won the AX Lite main on Saturday.

Breece did finish second ahead of Jared Lesher at the end.

And once again Gannon Lawson, in the 50cc 4-8 class won as did Manuel Moreno, who scored the Supermini victory. Both of these young riders would go into Sunday’s amateur day with two wins in their respective classes.

Manuel Moreno won the Supermini races on Friday and Saturday.

Now the series heads to Sacramento where they have a two-day show; pros race on Saturday while the amateurs go on Sunday. After that there is one more two-day show, April 22/23 in Denver before everyone heads for Las Vegas where the championships will be settled during Supercross weekend of May 5 to 7.
