AMERICAN VALLEY SPEEDWAY: DWARF CAR NATIONALS

The weekend began with some great racing, that is before Mother Nature threw a wet blanket over it.

QUINCY (May 5) – American Valley Speedway hosted the field of 75 Dwarf Cars this weekend. The event was the Western States Dwarf Car Association National Memorial Race.

Besides being a National the race honored the memory of two drivers, Dave Richardson and Leroy Kay, who perished in wrecks a few years ago. Before racing began the field lined up, and made a slow four-wide to salute their fallen comrades.

Dwarf Car Nationals

Before racing began the entire field of Dwarf Cars paid homage to their fallen comrades, Dave Richardson and LeRoy Kay with a 4-wide salute.

Three divisions, Pros, Veterans and Sportsmen were on tap as well as two supporting races. After the last checkered flag waved the Pro winner had some comments about the 20-lap affair.

“It felt like for ever and I didn’t think so either,” Joe Frock said later. “I thought I was just going to wait for him (Matt Sargent) to make a mistake and wasn’t making any mistakes. I knew my car was better but it’s only Friday night and the top ten transfer to the main tomorrow night.

“There were two passable grooves but he would leave me not enough room on the outside and just not enough room to get the inside. On the restart he did give me just enough room and that was my one shot I had. Matt races clean and I was going to make sure I raced him clean.”

Then he thanked Wild Island, Damron Racing Las Vegas, DRI, Axel Sports and Voss Fabrication. And special thanks to Todd Damron for coming by and helping Frock make his car fast.

Before final Pro field was set there was a B main won by Dillon Christman, who ended up 10th at the end of the night.

When the green waved on the 24-car field Sargent took off with Frock jumping from fourth to second. But the start was called off when two cars tangled in Turn 2.

After the field got back in line the green waved again and Sargent and Frock took off and started running nose to tail. Six laps in things slowed as four cars tangled in Turn 3 but all were able to continue.

The restart didn’t work as there were some spins and two cars needed to be towed to the pits. Once racing resumed it was the Sargent/Frock show up front as they left everyone in their dust.

Lap after lap Frock would first try the inside line then the outside. Exiting Turn 4 he’d almost get beside the leader only to have to tuck in behind him as they tore into Turn 1.

In the final laps there was another caution with a red flag. The driver in that incident was all right but his car needed to be towed back to the pits.

On the restart Frock dove to the inside and grabbed the lead then put a gap between himself and second place. In the end he took the win over Sargent followed by Ryan Winter and John Isabella.

Dwarf Car Nationals.

Joe Frock takes the checkered flag as he wins the Pro Class at the Dwarf Car Nationals.

When the Veteran group got the green there were 13 cars tearing down the front straight. Up front Goy Tow Sr., was on poing with Eric Weisler and Jack Haverty giving chase.

Tow cautions slowed the pace and in between them Kevin Bender took over the point followed by Tow and Casey Homer.

For the final laps the top were close and were being chased third and four placed cars. In the end Bender won with Homer taking second while Tow and Miraglio ended up third and fourth.

When the Sportsman main began Mark Hansen was on point followed by Brandon Gentry. A caution slowed the pace but on the restart Hansen took off but now Josh Weisz was closing in from the second position and they would finish two car lengths apart.

Hansen won that main followed by josh Weisz, Gentry and Sam Wren.

Two supporting races were on tap with the IMCA Sport Mods running first. Joe Wood was on point after the green but a caution on the third lap after two cars tangled in Turn 1 slowed things.

By not Tom Froggett had taken the point and was leading the charge.

When racing resumed J.R. Svennsson was closing on the leader but mechanical problems would put him out of the race on the white flag lap putting David Pierce second.

Up front Forggett scored his second victory in as many races. In fact this might have been his second race ever.

Between the Vets and Pro Dwarf main the Hobby Stocks took to the track. Lining up both Joe Blackwell and Jeff Olschowka were in almost identical looking cars.

On the green Blackwell took off and was really never headed. Behind him Lance Bain used a steady drive to claim second while Jimmy Ray Huffman ended up third.

Further back Olschowka found up fourth while Shayna Robertson ended her race sitting on the infield due to car problems.

At the end Blackwell was about to lap Olschowka and they crossed the line nose-to-tail.

Unfortunately the rains came on Saturday and washed out the second day of the nationals so Joe Frock claimed the large carved wooden trophy.

• On Saturday Lovelock Speedway attempted to start its 2017 season. The forecast looked good despite a pretty strong wind.

When the heat races began Scott Tenney and Cody Morris won their respective Hobby Stock events. Then the sprint cars got their turn and Robert Cooney won that one.

Finally it was time for the IMCA Modifieds and their first heat went off without a hitch with Travis White winning.

For the previous hour or so there was a pretty good lightning display to the north and west of the track. But when the second IMCA heat got on the track the rains began.

Sadly it was too much for the track to recover from so everyone was issued rain checks.

During the driver’s meeting Ed Macedo explained that Lovelock, Winnemucca and Fallon are working together with scheduling. In the works will be a three-race weekend where extra money will be paid out to the winners if they compete in all three races.

While the weekend began on a good note rains washed away the racing on Saturday. Apparently American Valley had a race on Sunday while Winnemucca also had one.
