  • RACING PREVIEW – NOV. 28-30

While there are no more races in this region until spring other events are still happening or are being shown as reruns on TV.   Down in Southern California, at the Glen Helen track, it’s the 17th annual Red Bull Day in the Dirt. The event attracts hundreds of motocross riders for three days of competitions that end on Saturday with a huge blow out party in the barn. With the start of Super Cross only five weeks away it’s a good chance for some riders to both have fun and test themselves before that series begins in earnest. Hard

  • MRANN’S CHAMPIONSHIP DAY

NIGHTINGALE (Nov. 23) – MRANN ended its season here east of Fernley on the south side of I-80. For the desert racers it was their Championship Day as titles were clinched or secured.   This time the Tankslappers Motorcycle Club staged “The Return of the Jackass,” in the rolling hills. While it was windy on Saturday the weather was almost perfect on Sunday. After racing at Winnemucca the previous week the rider count was down as only 58 racers showed up to compete in the big bike event. But it was a day when veterans and young lions ruled although

  • WEEKEND PREVIEW – NOV.20 – 23

This weekend is championship time for two different series, one local and the other international. Both events wind up racing for this year. • East of Fernley the desert racers of MRANN square off for their final event. The pits are located on the south side of I-80 off the Nightingale exit. Titles will be clinched while other racers are riding to secure their places in the points. The action begins Saturday with a 45-minute race for the Pee Wee riders. Then, at 11 a.m. the Mini Bikes/Women/Vintage and Bombers begin their 90-minute event. Sunday is for the big bikes

  • CHALLENGING TIMES FOR KART SHOP

SPARKS (Nov.17) – Any shop in this area that services the go-kart community will face challenges, especially in the winter. It’s because they operate in a niche market connected to a seasonal sport.   Right now Nevada Kart Sport is the only shop of this type in the area. And despite the season the owner, Rodney Rivera is committed to the survival of his business. The shop is a dream come true for him. “In 2011 I bought all Motor Machine Supply’s inventory, we moved in and started paying rent there,” he said. “It took us a while to get

  • RACING CALENDAR – NOV. 13 – 16

This weekend has something for about every type of racing fan and two series determine their championships by Sunday evening.   NASCAR visits Homestead, Florida for the final race of its season and there are two championships yet to be decided. Things begin Friday when Fox Sports 1, at 5 p.m., broadcasts the Camping World Truck series. That title is on the line with Matt Crafton having a chance to win his second crown in as many years. Last weekend in Phoenix,  Chase Elliott claimed the Nationwide title and he joined a select few sons and dads that have won

  • SPARKS DRIVER WINS ULTRA 4 TITLE

SPARKS, NV — Winning a championship in racing is never easy. It takes commitment, a whole lot of effort and support from people that help the driver as well as sponsors. And even then winning a title can be illusive.   However when the recent Nitto Tire Ultra 4 Nationals ended at Wild West Motorsport Park, one local, Dave Schneider, achieved this goal and won the Legends class championship. And he probably had the shortest commute home, Spanish Springs, as most of his fellow competitors towed in from other states. His involvement with off road sports began 15-years ago when

  • RACING CALENDAR – NOV. 7 – 9

While there is no racing in our region this weekend this is plenty to watch on TV.   NASCAR sets up shop in Phoenix and starts things rolling at 5:30 p.m. as Fox Sports One broadcasts the Camping World Truck Series race. Then at 1 p.m. Saturday the Nationwide series takes to the track on ESPN. Then at noon Sunday, ESPN broadcast the Sprint Cup race and who knows if this one will end in a pit road brawl after the checkered flag waves. For the drivers it’s a critical time as only four of the top eight will have

  • MRANN RETURNS TO MOON ROCKS

WINNEMUCCA RANCH ROAD (Nov. 2) – After a two-year absence the desert racers of MRANN returned to the Moon Rocks area. For years it’s been the site of their traditional Halloween weekend event and was always a fun event.   Saturday was a little tough on those racers that don’t compete on Sunday but the rain and snow set up the dirt for the Big Bikes. And that was highlighted by near perfect racing weather. The day was also time for the young lions to shine as teenaged riders took three out of the top four finishing positions. Finishing first

  • MOON ROCKS ARTICLE DELAYED

The expanded Moon Rocks article on MRANN’s Purge 100 event will be delayed until Thursday. The host club has to go over the finishes then will post them. This will allow me to show the overall finishes, in both Saturday races as well as the top 30 or 40 in Sunday’s event as wellas breaking it down into classes to show at least the top five. And congratulations to all the participants as well as the winners. Sorry for the delay.
