    LEMMON VALLEY, NV (March 28) – In these unusual times one-way people can protect themselves is to exercise Social Distancing. That means is to keeping a space between two people and one group, area dirt riders, are doing just that. On Saturday this reporter went out to Lemmon Valley out at Chickadee where I met three riders taking advantage of the nice weather.   • GREG EKINS – BACK TO HIS RACING ROOTS

    SPANISH SPRINGS, NV (March 21) – After a four-decade layoff Greg Ekins has spent the past five years returning to his racing roots. And those roots run deep since his father and uncle are in the AMA Hall of Fame. “My Uncle Bud Ekins started racing in 1950 and my Dad, Dave Ekins in 1951,” Ekins said. “The oldest trophy I have is a 1951 first overall that Uncle Bud earned for winning the Jack Rabbits MC Hare and Hound.” Ekins was born in 1955 and attended his first race as a three-month old at the 1955 Catalina Grand Prix.

    RENO, NV (March 18) – Racing preview over the next few weeks will be pretty strange. This virus has put a dark cloud over all types of racing and other things.   • FERNLEY SANDBOX ROCKS WITH BBMX OPENER

    FERNLEY, NV (March 15) – The opening round of this spring’s BBMX series was held at the Sandbox, or the Fernley Motocross Track This weekend was the time to shake off the rust and race again. The combined 30+ Intermediate as well as a trio of 40+ classes had the honor of starting the first moto in the morning.  Next up were the kids in the 85cc 12 and under class so they too helped get things rolling, all in all there were 20 motos to get everyone on the course.     RENO, NV (March 11) – Racing has returned to our region as well as a bunch of events to watch on TV. There are also practice sessions and the start of a series on the Norcal motocross tracks. CAR MEETS: • Reno Cars and Coffee has moved to a new location for this weekend’s meet. On Sunday, starting at 10 a.m. they will meet at Del Rio Pub and Grill located at 6148 Mae Anne Avenue.   • CHASSIS CERTIFICATION FOR DRAG RACERS

    SPARKS, NV (March 8) – Sunday was a big day for certain drivers that race at Top Gun Dragstrip. An inspector from the NHRA visited to certify those chassis that needed it. Asked about this John Stauverman, racing operations manager and president for Top Guy Dragstrip, said, “The Chassis Certification held here at Summit Racing Equipment in Sparks is sponsored by the NHRA and Top Gun Dragstrip. Any car capable of running in the 9’s needs to have certain requirements in the roll cage and safety equipment. NHRA every three years will inspect these cars and make sure they comply

  • NEW MOTOCROSS TRACK IN FERNLEY

    FERNLEY, NV (Feb. 29) – After 95A Speedway was sold late last year part of the property is now home to a new motocross track. It’s one of the first items the new owners are working on and the facility has a new name; 95 Motor Sports Complex. During Saturday’s motocross  practice this reporter had an opportunity to interview co-owners Sam Marson and Eric Steinbrecher.
