FERNLEY, NV (March 15) – The opening round of this spring’s BBMX series was held at the Sandbox, or the Fernley Motocross Track This weekend was the time to shake off the rust and race again.
The combined 30+ Intermediate as well as a trio of 40+ classes had the honor of starting the first moto in the morning. Next up were the kids in the 85cc 12 and under class so they too helped get things rolling, all in all there were 20 motos to get everyone on the course.
Saturday’s practice was marked by high winds but on Sunday morning the wind was pretty mild. That is until the second motos began then the riders were a bit challenged going over the jumps and by the dust.
There was only one pro racing but in each group a student class set the pace and took the overall win for the day. When the College Boy second moto began Triaten Mathisen took off and basically left everyone in his dust. There was a race for second and in the end Nickoli Klemish ended up second ahead of Nicholas Wilford.
After his victory that earned him the day’s overall win Mathisen said, “Yes it was easy. There were some rough spots but I managed to get myself through it. The wind was a problem a little bit here and there on the jumps.”
Then he thanked his parents and family for their support.
The other race with the pro was when School Boy and 25+ Open also raced. Once again it was a younger rider that took off and scored the victory, his second for the day.
Asked about the wind when going over the jumps Nakana Domingo said, “It’s a little scary but it’s not too bad, not like yesterday. It felt good, track was okay with just a few little sand sections but everything was fine.”
Then he thanked his parents, Team Testa as well as sponsors Tech One, Answer and BR Clothing.
Domingo was one of five riders that scored double victories during the day. His second one came in the Super Mini class.
Other double winners were Cord Hunter, who won in 50cc 7 plus and 50cc Open. In 85cc Owen Bills won in the 13 and Over as well as the Open class.
Triaten Mathisen scored victories in College Boy as well as 125/250 Intermediate while one of his elders Mike McMurry topped both the 40+ Junior as well as 50+ Intermediate classes.
The Pee Wee or 50cc ranks are filled with youngsters just getting their racing spurs and finding out what both riding and racing is all about. They have two starts, one for the riders then for the parents that spread around the course take off.
Anytime a youngster goes down several adults will make sure they are all right, get their bike started, put them on it and send them off with shouts of encouragement.
In the first moto for the 4 to 6 age group Tripp Prinz got some help from his father to get going. Later he missed the checkered flag, was stopped then dad headed him back to the pits.
Maverick Parke was the 4 to 6 winner while Cord Hunter won the other two classes.
Next up are the 65cc classes where these youngsters learn how to both ride and shift. Jevin Hubbard was the 9 and Under class winner while the 10 and up victory went to Garrett Berrington and Pierson Potratz won the Open race.
The last of the small bike classes are the 85cc divisions. The riders are more experienced and their speed shows this as the next step is into the big bike classes.
In the 12 & Under division Rogen Hill was the overall victory while Owen Bills scored in two different classes and Nakana Domingo was the Supermini winner, one of his two class victories.
At the upper end of the age groups are the most senior riders. Anthony Torres won the 60+ Open title while in the 50+ group Lonnie Madsen won in the Junior class as Mike McMurry won Intermediate, one of his two overall victories.
With 20 motos on tap the club race only had one race and veteran Tommy Jean won that one. There were also two classes for the women to race.
Ashleigh Trapanese, returning after having surgery on both shoulders was the only one riding in the Women’s A class while Sierra Koch won the B division.
There were some full almost full gates for several classes and many times the first left-hander after the start became calamity corner where more than a few riders crashed as did some younger riders. Fortunately most were able to continue but those first moto incidents put more than a few beginner riders on the sidelines with damaged machines.
Missing the first turn carnage Gabriel Marchant won the 250/450 Beginner second moto but swapped the lead with another rider several times. The 250/450 Junior second moto had a dramatic start when a rider rocketed to the lead only to fall in front of the entire pack. Somehow everyone missed him as he would get up and continue on.
Despite all the crashes the medics only had to take one younger rider back to his pits. One young rider was carried by his father while another one was able to walk back as was an adult racer.
All in all, despite the afternoon winds it was a good and most seemed happy to be racing again. Next up for BBMX is next weekend, March 21 and 22 in Winnemucca.

The first turn after the start was Calamity Corner as some riders in the 250/450 Beginner class found out. 
Otto Albrecht won the 250/450 Juniior title.

In the 125/250 Junior race Otto Albrecht is chased by Ayden Katzenmeyer. 
The 125/250 Beginner overall winner was Richie Whitney. 
The second moto for the 125/250 Beginner class saw more riders claimed by Calamity Corner. Here people rush to help those that crashed. 
Owen Bills won the 85cc 13 and over Class. 
Rogen Hill was the 85cc 12 and Under winner. 
When the 65cc Open race began one rider was claimed by Calamity Corner. After getting up he was able to continue. In the 10 and older 65cc class Garrett Berrington was the winner. 
Jevin Hubbard, who won the 65cc 9 and Under class is chased by runner up Pierson Potratz. 
Cord Hunter scored victories in the 50cc Open and 50cc 7 & Over classes. 
Mike McMurry in the second 50+ Intermediate moto is chased by Darryl Haney 
In the 40+ Master race winner Carl Baker is chased by Kenny Fye. 
Mike McMurry scored a double when he won the 40+ Junior overall. 
Peter Pensotti won the 40+ Beginner overall. 
Kile Fey won the 30+ Intermediate victory. The honor of starting the 2020 motocross season went to the 30+ Intermediate, 40+ Intermediate, Expert and Master classes.
