RENO, NV (JULY 13) — Despite the record setting heat it was a busy day here in Reno. There were two car meets plus a function that brought bike clubs together for a charity event aimed at helping disadvantaged kids that needed school supplies.
• Things got rolling around 10 a.m. when Sparks Cars & Coffee met at the Starbucks off Disc Drive.

In addition to groups of Corvettes one had its top in the halfway position . This allowed people to see where it was stored.

Over on another row were a couple of cars from the Midnight Riders car club.

Many times folks find an older vehicle and breath new life into it. For Hal Mintun it’s a case of owning a vehicle that is virtual new even though the first owner purchased it over 60 years ago.

Asked about the car he said, “This is a 1964 Corvair Monza, which I was able to purchase off the original owner 5 years ago, who retired from driving at the age of 93. He had this car in his garage in San Francisco since he purchased it in November of ’63.
“It’s all original, he gave me a giant stacks of receipts for all the service it had since it was new and kept it in perfect running condition.”

Mintun added when the original owner bought the car he covered all the seats, dashboard and trunk in plastic.
“So when I bought this car I got to unwrap it so now we have a brand new 1964 interior in it. It’s kind of cool because of the originality of it.”

He added that many of these cars were lost to rust. The Corvair was Chevy’s first Unibody car but they didn’t get it right. Moisture could get inside of the frame rails and they’d rust from the inside out.
“A lot of these wound up in junk yards and the engine in dune buggies. So it’s very rare to find out that has no rust on it.”
Next Sunday Reno Cars & Coffee meets as well as Reno Jeeps & Coffee.

• Northern Nevada Classics had a meet in the west parking lot of Baldini’s. It was the latest Brunch & Classics function for the group.

As usual there were many classic cars and trucks. In fact part of one row was pickups from different years.

Another car on display was a beautiful 1950 Chevy sedan. There was even a stuffed dog looking out of one of the windows.

The car was powered by a straight 6-cylinder engine and still is today.

Another vintage car was a 1937 Ford Woody station wagon. It’s another vintage car that’s been restored and was on display.

• Reno Harley Davidson had a busy afternoon with the Bikers with Backpacks event. The goal is helping disadvantaged youngsters get the school supplies they need.
Got a chance to interview Justin Myers, president of the Lucky Ones MC here in Reno.

“Bikers with Backpack started out, ah it’s our 13th year. We started out getting backpacks and school supplies with the Boys and Girls Club. They were donating back packs and school supplies to kids in need and their families.
Over the years we started moving one, we dropped to Project 150 now. It’s a great organization and they help dishomed teens or those getting out of a difficult situation thatg can’t afford to have nice clothes. They take care of personal hygiene, clothes, school supplies and meals for the families. It’s all for the high school kids that are getting ready.
We joined with Shogun MC to get the best of our benefits as well as to get the most supplies to Project 150 to help these families out.”
While they are helping the teens they also have backpacks that can be donated to younger kids although Myers said that might be through another charity.
“Generally we take whatever we get donated here and our cash donations, make a list of everything and we go shopping. Project 150 has been really great as they send us a list of what their needs are. We’ll go to the store and buy what they need. Last year we ended up taking two kids that were excelling in school on a shopping spree. Made sure they had a good time and started their school year right for them.

This is a great event, if anyone wants to come down here as its in July. There’s also the toy run and we’re working to make sure everyone gets what they might need.
