RENO, NV (Oct. 5) — This weekend is when the National Automobile Museum chose the winner for their first ever Museum Cup.

Rich Crombie, who directed the series said, “This is actually the first year of the 2025 Museum Cup Series, Phil MacDougle is the executive director. He wanted to do something that would engage the local car clubs.

“So every month starting in May he invited a different car club to come down and display their cars at the museum. There would be a winner that came back and competed today against the other car club winners so there would be an ultimate champion.”
He added five clubs were involved and they were Classic Iron Car Club, The Vdub Hub, Reno Mustang Club, Fernley Klazzic Kruizers and the Iron Mafia.
“Each one of those had a date in the summer and they bought all their cars in, then there was a winner from each one and they advanced to today’s round. Each one of those clubs are represented here today and one is going to be the winner of the Museum Cup Series. They’ll get their name on a cup that will be on display.”

The Vdub group brought a tricked out VW, since they are a VW group. In fact this summer they filled the gallery with a display that lasted for two weeks.

Fernley Klazzic Kruizers had a 1958 Chevy Del Ray. The car’s name was “Betty.”

Representing the Reno Mustang Car Club was a blue Mustang.

The Classic Iron Car Club had a red Mustang convertible. Each car was judged and one of those checking the car is shown in the photograph.

A Ford El Ranchero represented the Iron Mafia car club.
Several people examined each car and put in a score for separate parts like the interior, engine and the like. The maximum score for each car was 250 points.

When the winner was announced their car earned 220 points. In his remarks MacDougle said that next year the series will be expanded. Then he handed the trophy to the winner.
Winning the trophy plaque was Christian and Jessica Decker. Their car is the 1958 Chevrolet and they belong to the Fernley Klazzic Kruizers.

Asked about their car he said, “It’s our 1958 Chevy Del Rey, she’s silver and white and we’ve had her for about eight or nine years. I’ve done most of the work to it myself.
“It was painted when we got it but I’ve transformed the car from the motor to the transmission, exhaust. From the interior to the upholstery in the back and I’ve changed the whole suspension myself in my garage in jack stands and put it on air ride.”
Next question was how does it drive he said, “it drives really good. It wasn’t on air ride before so I was kind of concerned. Before it rode greet before so made sure I still got that quality of ride.”

• Earlier in the day Reno Jeeps and Coffee had their meet by the Human Bean Coffee Stand located at the corner of South McCarran and Longley Lane. The group now only meets once a month on the first weekend.

• Not far away, Reno Cars and Coffee had their first meet of the month. The location was by the Human Bean Coffee Stand close to the corner of Keitzke and Moana Lanes.

There was a pretty decent turn out for this first meet of the month. One car on display was this beautiful 2008 Cadillac.

Another car was a vintage VW owned by Roseann & Tory Smith. Asked about the car she said, “It’s a 1956 Volkswagen Oval Window. It was painted and came with most of the parts but then we actually bought a lot of the chrome, the bumpers. We bought windshields, we bought the new rubber, hubcaps so we pretty much bought a whole bunch of new stuff.”

Asked how it drives she said, “It drives really nice, the brakes are a little rough but we have a great time.”

Over at the end of one row several cars had their hoods up. One getting most of the attention was a Chevy El Camino SS. The owner said it was a work in progress.

There was also a Rat Rod on display owned by Lee Frenk. He said it’s a 1928 REO Speed Wagon.
“A guy I knew was a great fabricator, but he decided he want go buy something else when this was about half done, so I got lucky. He did all the heavy fabricating.

“Has the original plate in the front. It has a 302 Ford motor with a C4 transmission. I’ve been doing stuff to it since I got it 10 years ago. It handles good, I’ve got a good suspension, it’s got a Ford 9 inch rear end and custom axel.”
Good weather set the stage for this meet. Next week there will be other meets as well.
