RENO, NV (Sept. 7) — Reno Area Dirt Riders (RAD) held a clean up on the Peavine Summit Road Saturday morning. Something they that helps keep the public lands clear of refuse and it helps the Forest Service.

It took weeks of effort between RAD president Mike Marcum and Brad Moore. They divided the labor with Moore getting the prizes and doing the promotional material. Mercum was dealing with the computer issues as well as working with the Reno City Council and Forest Service.

While RAD is a riding group volunteers came from several groups as well as folks that just wanted to help as they too are concerned with the dumping on public lands.
Asked about the clean up Marcum said, “We’ve been doing this, at least one a year for the last four or five years. There’s money out there, there’s people that want to get it done. We’ve learned a lot and we’re tired of there being trash on our public land. We’re not going to sit back and try to blame people, we’re going to try to make it better.”
He added they were recovering six vehicles on the road to Peavine Summit. One group helping them was 4X4 Rescue and there were four dumpsters donated for the effort.
“This time we’re recovering six vehicles up and down Peavine with help from Nevada 4X4 Rescue. We’re filling two 20-yard and two 30-yard dumpsters.”
Then he continued, “The Reno City Council and Waste Management donated these two in the picture and the two other ones up the hill were paid for by the Forest Service and Nevada Recycling that partnered up to make a minimal effect on our tax dollars. My job is the coordination and the logistics, all of our partners did all of our graphics with the QHIK and Quick Space donated the Porta Potties”
The other organizer is Brad Moore, who spent a many hours rounding up prizes and sponsors for this effort. During the clean up he was going between sites as well as moving people where needed and making sure they had enough water.

While the sponsor graph seems full there are other groups that helped make this effort possible. Moore named them as he gave special thanks to all the groups and businesses involved.
They are Reno City Council, U.S. Forest Service, Waste Management, Reno Power Sports, KOZZ, Port of Subs on Wedge Parkway, 395 Motorsports, Reno Motor Sports, Leatt Protectives, Stadium GP, PJ & CO, MX Trophies, Quik Moto Graphics, Moto Source, Shears and Gears, Aaron Urban Hauling, 775 Four-Wheel Rescue and Reno Scrap Salvage.
One of them, 395 Motorsports, loaned out the tools used to pick small items off the ground without the need for a volunteer to bend over. They also had gloves and safety glasses for the volunteers.

Over by the easy ups at RAD Central there were snacks, water and Gatorade for the volunteers. There was also a raffle as several prizes were going to be given out at the end of the clean up.

There were two areas on the road that were being cleaned up. While many might think only large items were dumped the hillsides were covered by many small items including many spent shotgun shells. However there were larger items as well.

Furniture was one of the larger items on the hillside. This included broken couches and kind of an end table. There was even a camping trailer that was removed.

The dumpsters were constantly being loaded with tires and furniture. Volunteers had a steady stream as they would arrive then empty out the beds of their pickups.

A Bobcat was used to pickup some piles where things had been put into a pile. It also helped with larger items including dragging a bunch of tires that were chained together.

When one left North Virginia there was an overturned truck. Across from the main camp were two abandoned SUV’s and a backhoe with chains was used to drag them and other vehicles down the hill to where they will be picked up and taken to the dump.
Many that use public lands like this road have strong feelings about what is being dumped in these areas.
Marcum said, “My wife has told me many times she just hates that it’s just happening and doesn’t know what to do. Well we’re going to find out what to do, make it happen and now with friends we’re making a bit impact. If we all do a little, a lot gets done.”
Now thanks to RAD and the many volunteers as well as Marcum and Moore the area is much nicer and safer to recreate in.
