RENO, NV (Aug. 10) — This past week Hot August Nights took over the Reno/Sparks area. Today there was a huge parade and trophies were handed out.
During this time there were also two very different events happening on Sunday. One of them was the month’s first Sparks Cars & Coffee meet. While the turn out was a bit lower than normal, probably due to the heat and the end of HAN, it was still pretty good.

As usual there was quite a mix of cars including two Corvettes from different generations. One if front engine while the other was mid-engine.

One owner even brought his Cobra to the meet.

There was also a “hoods up,” line of cars and trucks that filled about half a row.

One of the older cars was brought by Matt Gilsdorf. Asked about the car he said, “It’s a 1941 Woody Wagon by Ford been in the family for probably 40 years. My father-in-law bought it and restored it as he used to have one as a teenager, he was a Southern California kid, a total surf kid.

“He found this one in Southern California, it was a working vehicle. Some farmers were using it to haul hay and all kinds of stuff so it was in pretty rough condition.”
He explained that his father-in-law, back in the 80’s had it restored by a Southern California hot rod shop.

“Originally it had a flat heat V-8 but that got pulled out during the restoration and a small block Chevy put in, only for reliability issues. Just the motor on this one is Chevy but the rest is all Ford.”
He added it’s “Three on the Tree,” for the shifter so it’s zero to 60 in about a minute and a half. He mentioned that most of the original dashboard still works. The interior has all been redone and was part of the restoration.

“It says it has 19,000 miles on it but I refuse to believe that,” he said. “It’s at least 119,000 or 219,000 because it was in pretty rough shape. The wood was good because it didn’t dry out, but a lot of work has gone into it over the years.”
Currently he uses to drive around as well as attending car meets.

There was another old-timer Ford at the meet. This was a black 1946 Ford Delux that has been beautifully restored.
The next meet for Sparks Cars & Coffee will be on August 24. Next Sunday, August 17, is when Reno Cars & Coffee meets again.

• Over at the Sparks Marina the Wild West Watercross series had a very different event on the water. Jet skies are used and there were 16 different races on Sunday as well as Saturday.
A series of floating Buoys of different colors marked the course. Each race had a standing start as a crew person holds the jet ski in place until a green flag waves then the rider was able to take off.

Racers came from all over with a few from this area. For further information, as well as the results, please check, www.wildwestwatercross.com.
