RENO, NV (Oct. 19) — Good weather set the stage for a nice weekend of car shows plus a chance for some to experience driving a racing Go Kart and riding a smaller motorcycle.
• The Northern Nevada Kart Club staged Community Days this weekend. On Saturday there was a great turn out for those interested in learning what Go Kart racing is all about.

After signup everyone lined up and the club went over safety items and what was expected. Helmets were provided for those that didn’t have them and there was a dress code as well.

Adults went out in small groups so they got several laps around a shortened track layout.

There was some passing and it appeared everyone was having a good time.

Youngsters also got some track time as well. They also were told about safety and what was expected of them before they went out.

Various club members had Go Karts on display an some were for sale. This way a future racer could be on the track soon and start practicing.
The second Community Day was Sunday. This time the focus was on the Minimoto series that visits the track a couple of time during the season. Unfortunately this reporter was unable to attend Sunday’s session.
• Sunday Reno Cars & Coffee held its second meet of the month. As usual the location is by the Human Bean Coffee Stand located by the corner of Keitzke and Moana Lanes.

While cars are welcome a group of Motorcycle riders, who are also welcomed, showed up. Then they got coffee and checked out the cars on display.
There were cars from different generations. One of them belonged to John Absmeir, who brought his 1976 Porsche 911 Targa to the meet.

“I’ve had it for about a decade and the engine was rebuilt about two and half or three years ago. It’s a 2.7 Liter Flat Six Boxer original from the car.
“But been rebuilt with a little bit of extra goodies. So cams and fuel injection had been upgraded and the exhaust has been upgraded as well.”
Asked how it drives he said, “. It drives phenomenal, like a dream. I’ve redone the underbody, suspension so it’s very tight with a little bit lower stance. It’s perfect for Geiger grade as it’s light, rear wheel drive, rear engine.”

This time there were at least three Cobras present. One of them was one red and a one to continuing versions Shelby produced.

The motor is a 427 so this car radiates power and handling.
Over on another row Larry Peyton had his car, a1955 Chevy Bel Air sedan on display.

“I had her for about 15 or 16 years now. We’ve done the frontend suspension, rear end, wheels and tires. About a year ago we swapped out the straight six for a 502.

“At some point we were going to add AC/Heater but I can only afford when I can so I’m doing that in stages, that’s the goal eventually. Right now it’s got 3:73’s, it has a six-speed manual so thinking about going 4:11 so has more pull from the bottom all the way to the top is I have two overdrive gears.”
Asked how it drives he said, “It launches, handles like its on rails. I mean, it’s a completely brand new car.”
The turn out was pretty good and everyone was enjoying the nice weather.
Next Sunday, Sparks Cars & Coffee will have its final meet of the month.
