NEED2SPEED + SPARKS CARS & COFFEE MEETS

RENO, NV (March 8) — This weekend two large car events happened in Reno. Great weather set the stage for both events.

Need2Speed was a busy place as they hosted the first monthly Karts & Kars meet.

• Need2Speed is going to start having a Karts & Kars meet on the first Saturday of the month. Not only was the parking lot full but the area in front of the business as well as the patio was used.

This Lotus usually had a crowd around it.

One of the cars on the patio was this beautiful Lotus. Usually it was surrounded by a crowd of admirers.

This yellow Ferrari was a late addition.

Right across from it was a yellow Ferrari. It was on of the last cars put into this area.

The meet attracted all ages and every type of vehicle.

The parking lot drew many types of cars and trucks. It even drew a young man riding his scooter.

Out in the parking lot these items were also for sale.

There was a table in the parking lot where Roberto and his cousin were selling miniature cars. They had all types including ones that changed color if they were in the sunlight. Those interested can call Roberto at 775-848-6778.

Over in one row Pat Gates had his 1964 Chevy Nova 400 on display.

Pat Gates stands beside his 1964 Chevy Nova.

Asked about the car he said, “It’s got a small block 396 with over 500 horsepower, over 430 at the rear wheels. It’s got a Trenek TKX 5-Speed, Dana 60 and a 373 Posi. I’ve done the motor and transmission and it already had the rear end in it.

The 36 small block Gates put in his Nova.

“I did the rear springs, put the AC in, that’s about it that I’ve done to it. It came pretty clean, still original paint, all original body panels and trim on it. I’m the third owner, original California car. That helped keep in clean and rust free.”

Asked how it drives he smiled and said, “Like a bat out of hell.”

Something you don’t see often, a BMW with right hand drive.

Not far away was an unusual BMW. This one has right hand drive and was sporting a Japanese license plate on the front.

Cars kept arriving as the meet progressed. It’s estimated that there may have been 200 cars there.

• On Sunday morning Sparks Cars & Coffee had their first meet of the month. Once again good weather set the stage for a good turn out of vehicles.

There was a pretty good Corvette row at the meet.

This time there was a pretty good Corvette Row in one line. It had everything from front engine to mid-engine models.

Any meet attracts people of all ages including this grandmother and her 18-month old grand daughter.

People of every age come to these meets. One of them was 18-month old Wynona, who was being escorted by her grandmother. This youngster is a future driver in training.

Not far away was Kim Robinson, who had her 1988 Pontiac Fiero Formula on display.

Kim Robinson stands by her 1988 Fiero. Her sneakers match the car’s color.

Asked about the car she said, “It’s completely stock except other than I painted the yellow engine to match the paint. The yellow, by the way, is an 88 only Fiero color. I bought it brand new in May of 1988.

“I kept it clean and started showing it at car shows in 1988. Make a wish was one of the first shows I ever went to. It won ‘’Best of Show,” last year at the Northwest Fiero Fest, an all Fiero car show in Washington State every June.”

While the motor was being worked on she painted the top to match the car’s color.

The car needed some work into it as car sat in a garage for while. After that she said its basically brand new and has about 71 thousand miles on it.

She also has Fiero keychain.

Asked how it drives she said, “Really well. The 88 Fieros had an up graded suspension. I also have an 87 Fiero and I do notice the difference steering and stuff. I honestly like the older version better as this is real tight.”

A trio of bikes were also on display.

In addition to the cars and trucks a trio of street bike riders were on hand. Their bikes were also on display.

At the end of one row Joe Brown had his McLaren on display, one of the exotic cars that show up from time to time.

Joe Brown stands by his 2018 McLaren 720S.

Asked about he said, “We looking at a 2018 McLaren 720S. I’ve had it for about 8 months now and its completely stock. It has a V-8 Twin Turbo, 707 horsepower. It gets up and goes.

“It drives like a go kart. I used to race shifting karts and it kind of handles like those did.”

Japanese and British Sports cars from different generations.

While not as exotic close by were two different sport cars from two different generations. One was an MGB while the other was a Datsun Z car.

Next week Reno Cars & Coffee meets. I’ll have a full run down on what’s happening in my Thursday preview article.
