RACING & CAR MEET PREVIEW: MAY 21 TO 24

RENO, NV (May 20): Here we are at Memorial Day Weekend, the car meet and cruise table is overflowing not to mention regional racing.  In addition on TV some of the classic races will be run as well.

CAR MEETS:

Once again Kim’s Cruisers get the weekend rolling.

• Thursday gets the weekend rolling when Kim’s Cruisers meet at Kim’s Donut and Tea House. Starts around 8 a.m. at 1328 U.S. 395 North in Gardnerville.

Great way to end the day is with the Thursday Cruznite.
  • That afternoon it’s the Thursday Cruznite that goes to the Chilcoot Frosty and Goodwins General Store. Usually begins around 5 p.m. and directions are 395 north from Reno, turn on Highway 70, go over the hill to Chilcoot.
This week is the first Thursday Night Cruise in Carson City.
  • Down in Carson City it’s the first Thursday Night Cruise. Runs from 5 until 7 p.m. and this week’s meeting place is Bully’s on West College Parkway.

• Friday is a busy day.

Once again Carson Cars & Coffee has a double-header with meets Friday and Saturday.
  • Carson Cars & Coffee has another Friday-Saturday double-header. The meets at 6:30 each day at the Dutch Brothers Coffee Stand on South Carson Street.
Dutch Cars & Shakes meets Friday.
  • AT 7 p.m. Dutch Cars & Shakes meets at the Dutch Brothers Coffee Stand in Reno. Location is 7175 Vista Parkway.
There is a Bike Ride & Shoot on Friday in Sparks.
  • There is also a Friday Night Bike Ride & Shoot. Meeting time is 7 p.m. and it starts at 1600 Victorian and ends at 1250 Victorian, both are in Sparks.
Old Slammers of Reno is having the year’s first cruise Friday night.
  • The Old Slammers of Reno, a vintage VW club, is having its first cruise of the year on Friday. Meet starts at 6:30 in the parking lot of Northtowne Shopping area.
Reno Bike Community is having a ride Friday evening.
  • A little earlier the Reno Bike Community will start to meet around 6 p.m. at the Maverik Station at Sutro and North McCarran. Kickstands to up at 7 p.m. when the ride starts.

• Saturday is another full day with a pair of cruise-ins and two meets.

Saturday morning begins at 8 a.m. when Coffee & Classics meets.
  • The day starts at 8 a.m. with the Coffee and Classics Cruise In. It’s for classic cars and location is the new Starbucks at 4801 Kietzke Lane.
Nevada Car Coalition presents the annual Summer Salute Car Show to benefit veterans.
  • The biggest show is the annual Summer Salute put on by the Nevada Car Coalition. Location is Rancho San Rafael Park at 1595 Sierra Street in Reno. Check in starts at 7 a.m. and the show runs from 9 until 2 p.m. This show honors veterans.
Sunday morning is when Sparks Cars & Classics has its second meet of the month.

• Things slow down on Sunday when Sparks Cars & Coffee hosts its second meet of the month. Starts around 10 and is by the Starbucks on Disc Drive.

RACING (4-WHEEL):

Diamond Mountain Speedway has racing Friday and Saturday night.

• Up north, the Diamond Mountain Speedway in Susanville has a Friday-Saturday show that includes Sprint Cars, the regular classes as well as the Tri State Pro Stocks. The program usually starts around 6 p.m. 

Battle Mountain Raceway opens its season with a two-day show.
  • To the east Battle Mountain Raceway opens its season with a Friday-Saturday show. Racing begins at 7 p.m. both days.
Saturday is when drivers at Battle Mountain Raceway have a Drivers Meet and Greet.
  • In addition to the racing Battle Mountain Speedway is having a Driver Meet & Greet on Saturday. This is a great way, especially for the younger fans, to meet their heroes.

• There is also a very different kind of racing at the Sparks Marina on Friday and Saturday. It’s the final round of the Wildwest Watercross series. One can see several classes racing through the courses so the show runs almost the entire day.

RACING & PRACTICE (MOTOCROSS):

The annual Over The Hill Gang Nationals is at the Sandbox MX in Fernley.

• Biggest race of the weekend is the annual OTHG National event at the Sandbox MX track in Fernley. The track is just west of the Veteran’s Cemetery.

  • Friday, gates open at 7 with practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday gates open at 6:30 with racing beginning around 8 a.m. and many times there is a BBQ after racing has ended. Sunday, the second race day, gates open at 6:30 with an 8 a.m. start to the racing and trophies are handed out after the final checkered flag.
Over in California only Riverfront MX is open.
  • With Prairie City closed, as the track is prepared for Hangtown, the only REP Racing track in California is Riverfront MX Park. Thursday, from 5 until 10 p.m. is Big Bike Only, then from 5 until 10 p.m. Friday it’s Mini Only Night and on Sunday, from 9 until 2 p.m. there is Open Practice.
It’s a busy weekend at the E Street MX Park.
  • E Street MX Park on Saturday hosts an AMA District 36 Grand Prix, which is a full day of racing for many classes. Sunday, from 9 until 2 p.m. is open practice.
All the tracks at MMX Racing will be in use this weekend.
  • MMX Racing has practice from 9 until 2 p.m. on the Main, Sand and Kids tracks.  Then Sunday, from 9 until 3 p.m. those tracks have practice while the Vintage track has an OSMX ride day.
The Summer Sundayz series starts this weekend.
  • This weekend the P.R.O. Motocross Summer Sundayz series begins. The first round in Sunday at the AMP track.

RACING (NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL):

This weekend’s NASCAR TV schedule.

• Once again all of NASCAR is behind a pay wall with one exception, the O’Reilly Race.

• Thursday is empty but there maybe races on other outlets. Some of them are www.mavtv.com, www.dirtvision.com, www.floracing.com, www.racexr.com, and of course www.youtube.com where many races are highlighted.

The Wienermoblies race at Indy on Friday.

• Friday at 8 a.m. Fox Sports 1 has the final Indy Car practice then at 11 a.m. Fox airs one of the more entertaining events, the Oscar Mayer Wienie 500, who they race those Oscar Mayer vehicles.

  • Fox then comes on art 11:30 with the Indy Car Pit Stop challenge. At 12:25 Apple TV has Formula 1 qualifying from Canada.

• Saturday starts at 8:15 a.m. when Apple TV has Formula 1 Sprint race followed at 12:25 with qualifying.

• Sunday is a triple-header starting at 12:30 on Fox airs the Indianapolis 500.

  • At 1 p.m. Apple TV has the Formula 1 race from Canada. It’s another street course for this series.
The Coke 600 is raced at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday. Photo courtest- charlottemotorspeedway.com.
  • The day ends starting at 1 p.m. with the NASCAR Cup Coca-Cola 600 from Charlotte. While the Indy Cars race on a 2.5 mile long track the NASCAR Cup drivers to 100 miles further on a track that’s only 1.5 miles long.

The motocross track at Reno-Fernley is still closed due to water truck issues.

• Currently water truck issues have closed the motocross track at the Reno-Fernley Raceway. Maybe one of the readers out there might give them some help.
