RENO, NV (May 24) — Big weekend with one of the largest car shows of the year. Helping the turn outs was great weather.

• The Reno Bike Community got the weekend started with their Friday evening ride. The turn out was lighter than normal probably due to the start of the holiday weekend.
• The biggest event of the weekend was the annual Summer Salute presented by the Nevada Car Coalition.

When asked about the event Rory Planeta, from the Nevada Car Coalition said, “ It’s a beautiful day, we’ve got more going on than last year. A few less cars but not many, as we didn’t allow same day registration this year. Pre-registered only and we have 443 registered vehicles, so its a good day. We’ll be back Saturday before Memorial Day next year.”

There was a huge area at Rancho San Rafael full of all types of cars and trucks. In addition man spectators were on hand and they filled most of the parking areas.

As expected many cars had their hoods up. Many times owners will clean and shine the motors in their cars.

With so many vehicles there were different ones parked next to each other. Here a T-Bucket is by a Camaro and a vintage pick up.

Among the vintage cars there was this early model Corvette. It’s the grandparent for a long line of models we see today.

One of the enhanced vintage vehicles was a 1934 Ford Coupe. The owner had flames added to the paint.

Not far away was a 1930 Ford Delivery car. It too had been restored and enhanced.

Over in one row Randy Gomez had his 1947 Pontiac Streamliner Woody on display.

“It’s been completely restored, was a frame off and everything is original. The car is completely stock and rides like a truck.”

Another stock looking vehicle was this 1932 Ford Coupe. This is a great looking restoration.
The Summit benefits veteran groups. During the afternoon several veterans were awarded a Quilt of Honor. There was also a beauty contest plus many vendors offering a variety of things. Several veteran groups were in that area.
• Sunday morning Sparks Cars & Coffee held its second meet of the month. The weather was great and helped make a great turn out.

As expected there were many cars with their hoods up. This allows spectators to check out the work many owners put into their car’s motors.

One of the more unusual “vehicles,” present was a drag boat, or at least it looks like one. I understand it might have a new paint job in the near future.

Many owners will take an older, maybe vintage car or truck and through restoration, will give it new life. One example was this red Chevy El Camino.
Not far away was a Cobra in U.S. Racing colors, which is owned by John Booth.

“It will be 30 years old next year and I’ve had it since it was born in ’98,” he said. “This is a Superformance Replica Mark 3. The first engine was a 460 Ford Truck motor and I put 8,000 race miles on it until it finally blew.
“This motor is a Shelby block 427 but it’s actually a 496. Has fuel injection, got all the right suspension components with six piston and 4 piston brakes. Has Koni coil over shocks a TKO 600 5-speed transmission and a torsion dirt rear end.”
Asked how it drives he said, “It’s rough but it’s quick. This is a little off the original color as I just repainted it in ’23. Took off all the track rash and made it look pretty again.”

Over in one row was a beautifully restored 1962 Impala SS convertible. This is a good example of an owner giving new life to an older car.

The interior is stock and as clean as the bodywork. It even has the hanging dice cubes suspended from the rear view mirror.
Next Sunday is the fifth one of the month and some Cars Coffee groups won’t have meets. Be sure to check the Thursday preview article.
