BATTLE BORN MX: SEASON OPENER

FERNLEY (March 11) – Battle Born MX opened its spring series with a huge turn out at the Fernley/Wadsworth Lion’s Club Motocross Track, otherwise known as the Sand Box.

On Sunday there were 434 entries. While many will ride in one or more classes this an increase in racers over the past year or so.

Things were held up due to something unusual at Fernley, fog. Finally enough burned off to the day rolling and with 24 races that were run twice it was a long day. Still there was some pretty good, hard racing.

The second 250/450 pro moto was a good example of how a rider can win the battle but not the overall victory.

When the gate dropped Collin McHaney from Fallon got the hole shot and took off. In hot pursuit were the duo of Aaron Siminoe and the first moto winner Billy J. Adams.

In this race there was no catching McHaney as he lead from start to finish. After finishing second in the first moto Siminoe ended up third while Adams ended up second, enough to give him the overall victory for the day.

At the finish McHaney said, “The track was pretty good, I just got the hole shot, stayed out front and didn’t ride over my head.”

Then he thanked his parents, girl friend and Testa Motorsports for their support.

While some didn’t race the second moto there were eight pros on hand for the first. This is a big increase over the past few years as many times there would only be one or two on hand.

Another good indication of the sports growth in this region is that five classes had more than 20 riders at the starting gate and a few of them had so many entries they had to be divided in two.

The 125/250 Junior class was one of those divided groups and the first division had a very close race in their second moto. It was another case of where the winner didn’t score the overall victory.

Taking the checkered flag first was Andrew Bragdon, who would end up fourth overall.

Asked about the race he said, “That track is very rough right now, there’s not one smooth line and he (Trever Tellez) was right on my rear fender the whole race.”

That second place finish iced the overall victory for Tellez as he scored two runner-up finishes while his rivals didn’t.

When the gate dropped to start the second moto the duel would be a three-way battle at first. Up front Bragdon was on point but right behind him were the duo of Tellez and Tristen Mathisen, who won the first moto.

Lap after lap they tore around the track with Bradgon and Tellez ending up one-two while Mathisen finished third.

While he was catching his breath Tellez said, “Usually Fernley gets pretty rough by the end of the day. We were neck and neck the whole race but he got a better start and had clean laps.:

Then the thanked his parents, BVH, “for this nice motorcycle,” All Sport Dynamics and everyone that helped him.

At times there will be more than one class running in a Race. One example was the 85cc Superminis running with both the Women’s classes.

The Superminis were launched first then after a brief interval, except for the first moto when two gates had to be reset, both groups of women are sent on their way.

Up front in Supermini Cole Coker finished the day with two first place finishes while Nakana Domingo and Chase Cannizzaro ended up second and third.

Afterwards Coker, who came all the way from Alameda, California said, “The race was good, got rough at the end but I still charged hard.”

Then he thanked his parents, CT Racing and all those that support him.

In the Women’s classes Ashleigh Trapanese, now recovered from hand surgery, scored two victories in the A group with Jasmyne Herrera an Chrystal Ponsock taking the next two places.

Hayden Losey won the Women’s B overall as she swapped victories with second place Lucy Moran.

After taking the checkered flag Trapanese said, ” Both motos were really fun, the track got rough really quick but it was fun.”

Then she thanked her parents, Tech One Designs, Flow Vistion, Fly Racing and Mike Metals.

Schoolboy was another battle in both motos. Gage Knecht took both wins and earned the overall victory for the day.

While he was up front not far behind were the duo of Dylan Thorwaldson and Blayne Herrera. Both of them ended up second and third for the weekend.

“It was a battle with them, back and forth a little bit,” Knecht said after the second moto. “The Yamaha (Herrera) got me but I got him back. He slipped up a little in a turn then I just rode smooth the rest of the race and came out with the win. It’s getting supper rough and I think that’s why he messed up in the turn as they are getting really chopped up.”

Then he thanked his parents, Moto Source, “for always keeping the bike running good,” Mika Metals for his chain and sprockets, Moose and KTM.

Motocross has a class for just about every age bracket and at the top of that ladder 65+ Drew Mason was entered but didn’t race although 58+ Chris Ober did and in the 52+ brackets the winners were Chris Stone and Doug Wollum.

At the bottom of the age classes are the Pee Wee riders. These youngest riders are earning their racing spurs and the turn out for these classes speaks well of the future.

The Beginner class started 23 riders and the Pee Wee Open group had 16 on the gate. These racers compete on a short course with many adults close by so if anything happens, like a tip over, helping hands are near to get the rider going again.

Next step is the 65cc class where the youngsters learn how so shift gears. There were 14 beginners racing this weekend.

Moving up 85cc is the last small bike class and many of those racers will soon be stepping up to the big bike classes. Once the numbers look good as 22 riders competed in the Beginner and Open races.

The day finally ended after the sun set behind the mountains to the west of the track. Still everyone seemed to have had a great time and are happy to be racing once again at this local track.

There were three riders that scored victories in multiple classes. T.J. Taylor scored three times as he won 125/250 Intermediate, 250/450 Intermediate and the Big Bike Open.

Demetre Proutsos won two classes 85cc Open and 85cc Intermediate while young racer Drew Mason won the Pee Wee Intermediate and Open classes.

With all the hard racing there were more than a few riders that went down. Fortunately most everyone was able to continue although one rider probably headed for a check up.

Next up for BBMX is Round 2 in Winnemucca on the weekend of March 25. Then after an Easter Break, the Old Timers host the next race and that will be at the Honey Lake Motocross track located south of Susanville, California.

• Saturday was practice day and there was again a large turn out of riders. Unfortunately there was a huge crash that sent three riders to the hospital.

At this writing their conditions were unknown but we wish them all a speedy recovery.

OTHER RACING NEWS:

• After being rained out last weekend Chico finally got to run the Silver Cup on Saturday. Minden’s Tanner Thorson was involved in a first lap altercation that sent him to the pits for repairs.

He would restart from the back of the 23-car field but worked his way up to finish 6th. Another driver that has raced at 95A Speedway was Buddy Kofid, who led for the first half of the event and ended up second.

• NASCAR’s top two divisions visited Phoenix this weekend and two Nevada natives competed there.

In Sunday’s NASCAR Cup race Kyle Busch started seventh and would finish 2nd while older brother Kurt started 23rd and ended up 10th. In Saturday’s Camping World Truck race Kyle started fifth and finished third.
