DIAMOND BACK HARE AND HOUND: CHATTIN STORMS TO VICTORY

DRY VALLEY, NEVADA (April 8) – This year’s Diamond Back Hare and Hound was run at the Dry Valley OHV area. This round of MRANN’s spring series was the Lassen Motorcycle Club.

While the weather wasn’t so great Saturday the rain and wonderful weather Sunday set the stage for some great racing. And one of the young lions made the most of it.

MRANN

Drew Chattin got the hole shot when the experts started and never looked back as he scored his second victory in a row.

“The race was fun, it was really, really technical, which was awesome,” Drew Chattin said after winning his second Big Bike race in a row. “The markings weren’t very good and I got lost a couple of time too and that was eventful. Just cruised, did my own race, didn’t see anyone, hear anyone behind me, no one passed me so felt really smooth the entire race.”

Then he thanked his mother, father as well as friends like Tristen, Tyler, his sister and sponsors RMS, Moto Mouth, Clutch Incorporated and DDC. There was one supporter Ray Sbrigila, who supplied the Mousse Bibs that went inside his tires and help reduce the shock from going over bumps at high speed.

At a MRANN race each group, expert, amateur and novice has its own separate line at the start. A banner is raised and when its lowered the race is on.

Experts go first and Chattin made sure everyone was going to eat his dust. After taking the hole shot he had a good lead when crossing a road and turning back onto the course.

From there he just extended his lead even if he got a briefly lost a couple of times. In fact he even had enough of a lead to do a quick fist bump with his father Tom, who was manning one of the checkpoints.

Stephen Tichenor tried his best but in the end Chattin had about an 8-minutel lead at the finish.

MRANN

Stephen Tichenor wound up second overall when he couldn’t catch the flying Chattin.

“It was really fun, challenging race, Drew worked me good today. I could see him most of the first loop and he probably got about two minutes on me. So the second loop I tried to ride smart and keep it on two wheels, just one tip over but other than that it was good,” Tichenor said. “Other than that the course was super fun, we definitely got our money’s worth today.”

He also expressed his appreciation for the Lassen MC folks and the work they put into running this race. Then Tichenor thanked his wife, Rimbenders MC and Nick Alosi for working on his bike, Freedom Motosports. Fly Racing, Number Tech, C&J Equipment and Chick Fil A.

Coming in third after a steady ride was veteran Sean Berryman who spent most of the race chasing Cory Fletcher, who had been third but fell to fourth at the end.

“I just following him (Fletcher) the whole lap, I didn’t think I was going to be able to catch him then probably about 10-miles back I was able to catch him. We raced for a little bit and got by him,” Berryman said after the finish. “The course as tough, really rocky and kind of whooped out really tough course.

Then he thanked Dirt Tricks, RMS, his family, sister and wife for coming out to the race.

Further back in 10th place was Kody Gray, the first amateur that finished both loops. At a MRANN race there are usually two loops so to be classed as a finisher a rider must complete one and many stop after that.

“It was pretty tough, a lot of rocks out there,” he said after finishing. “There were some rocky high climbs and some sand that was kind of hard to get through, a few dips but not really any water falls. I went over the bars once and swapped ends in the first lap so two pretty bad crashes.”

He gave special thanks to his father Jim Gray as he is the one that works on the bike and helps Kody get to the races.

Finishing 17th overall was Evyn Smith, the runner up in the Amateur division.

“It was rough, he didn’t lie when he said it was rough. The sand wears you down the whoops were huge and there were rocks everywhere you didn’t want them to be,” Smith said. “The hill was kind of a love-hate like when you see it you say, ‘I’m almost done,’ but if you kept momentum and picked good lines it was really easy.”

Then he thanked his parents and brother for coming to the race with him.

Further back was the first Novice John Perhacs, who ended up 23rd overall.

“The race was a killer, it’s my first one and I had a lot of fun,” he said. “It was rough but it had its smooth spots too that were pretty fun and it was a fun downhill.”

Then he thanked his wife Emily and dog, who gave him a big welcome at he finish.

MRANN

In his first ever MRANN ace John Perhacs won the Novice Class and finished 23rd overall.

The hill several spoke about was a steep downhill leading to a relatively short section before the pits. A rider’s experience usually determined how fast or slow they came down it.

Further back in 43rd and 44th place was a mother-daughter pair. Beth Legenbauer ended up one place of ahead of her daughter Carley. They finished first in Women’s Amateur and Novice class.

MRANN

At the top of the age scale Pete Prichard won the 60+ Class and finished 59th overall.

The Grand Old Man award, if there was one, would have gone to Pete Prichard. Riding in the 60+ Class he ended up 59th for the day and did both loops.

• Weather on Saturday wasn’t quite as nice as Sunday’s but the races went off anyway. If anything those that compete in MRANN race no matter what the weather is.

First to race were the Pee Wees and Jesse Miller won that race. In the combined race Taylor Kemp was first overall and the Women’s winner while Walker McGreal as the first Mini Bike for third overall and the Bomber winner, who was fourth overall was Scott Martin.

Unfortunately the Team Race wasn’t included in the results.

Now everyone gets two weeks off before the next MRANN race at Blue Wing Flat north of Toulon.

REPORTER’S NOTE: There is a photo gallery after the results. While I have some Amy Fey was also at the race both days should have photos of everyone. To see her photos please go to www.amyfyephotography.com.
