RATTLESNAKE RACEWAY: POINTS RACE #2

FALLON, NV (April 14) – Rattlesnake Raceway staged the second race of the season going with good weather and hot racing on the track. This time the IMCA main was a come-from-behind story for the winner.

In the heat races both Malen Gonzalez and Shawn Natenstedt were caught up in accidents. Fortunately for them there was a B main and they finished one-two so transferred into the 16-car main.

When the 30-lap main began Mark Skender took off from his pole position only to spin while exiting Turn 4. Somehow every one missed him and the field was order to reform for a complete restart.

Since he caused the caution Skener was put at the back and the result was a family front row. Jeff Olschowka was now on pole with his father-in-law Joe Blackwell sitting on the outside pole.

When the IMCA Modified main began Joe Olschowka was on pole with his father-in-law Joe Blackwell on the outside pole.

When the green waved Olschowka took off and soon Andy Strait jumped into second with Travis White holding down third. Behind the leader both Shawn Natenstedt and Malen Gonzalez were moving through the pack.

A spin by another car in Turn 4 almost ended Olschowka’s night but he managed to escape. On the green Strait, who had dropped to third behind Jeff Macedo retook second.

Behind the leader Robert Miller moved into third then took second and set his sights on Olschowka. Not far behind a charging Natenstedt moved into third.

There was another caution when Ty Gamble spun in Turn 4. On the restart Natenstedt used the outside line to take the lead by the time he reached Turn 4.

Behind him Olschowka was holding off both Miller and Strait.

Two more quick cautions slowed the pace but set up a 4-lap dash to the checkered flag. On the green Natenstedt took off and would claim the victory followed by Miller, Olschowka and Strait.

In a come-from-behind victory Shawn Natenstedt wins the IMCA main event.

The other big car class is Hobby Stock. When their main began Ray Davis was briefly in the lead until Shayna Nieman got past him.

A caution made a complete restart necessary and this time Randy Boyd took the point with Davis behind him. Another caution on lap 3 halted things but this time it would be a regular restart.

Before the green waved again a stalled car had to be pushed to the pits. On the green Boyd took off followed by Mikki Beuchat.

Now David Ausano, who had worked his way from the back to third was giving chase and not far behind him was Dan Dias.

Ausano then moved up to the outside line and passed both leaders to take the point. Then there was another caution when Rusty McMillian stopped on the front straight but was able to get going again.

That caution put Ausano back in second and on the green he and leader Boyd took off. Behind them Nieman had moved into fourth. A couple of laps later Ausano moved to the inside groove and took the lead.

There were two more cautions and the final green came with three to go.

In the end Ausano scored his second victory in as many races followed by Dias, Boyd and Nieman.

(REPORTER’S NOTE: Have to apologize to Natenstedt and Ausano. I accidentally deleted their quotes, sorry.)

When the Dwarf Car main began Kenny Martin and Steve Winters led the charge. By lap three Joe Frock had rocketed from his last place starting position to second then got the lead one lap later.

There would be three more cautions but every time Frock jetted away and left everyone in his dust. In the end Tim Fitzpatrick and Nick Winters ended up second and third.

After his victory Frock said, “The track was challenging but created excellent passing options. After we took the lead, just cruised from there. Thank you to my sponsors: Damron Racing Las Vegas, R&J Landscaping, Wild Island, Diatte Racing Innovations and Nature’s Bakery.”

In the Gen-X main it was all Cody Kennemore as he took off and motored into the next area code for the victory. Second place Jesse Showe crossed the finish line ahead of Robert Crane while Erica Smith finished further back.

The Mod Minis or Super Stock 4 as they have been called, started with two cars being collected as the field exited Turn 2. Once that was cleaned up the green waved again with Rich Evans on point and Stephen Crook in second.

Behind the leaders Dennis Crook was on the move in his orange racer. Soon he caught his brother and took over the lead while roaring down the front straight.

From that point on Crook was on cruise control has he kept extended his lead every lap. Behind him Jesse James finished second ahead of Stephen Crook and Evans.

The Rattlesnake Outlaw Karts were also on hand.

Before the cars races three divisions raced and the winners were, Levi Annas (Beginner), Evan Rauscher (250cc), Jason Doering (500cc), and during the intermission Gauge Felzke won the Box Stock main.

There was no mention of Jimmy Berhorst in the main event on 28th, there were alot of his fans in the stands of rattlesnake raceway yet no mention at all he has been Racing since he was 17 (42 now) And has become a bit Of a fan favorite but no mention at all, changed his life around about six years algo, now has good sponsors.

I kind of remember what happened six years ago. The main focus I need for a story is to
focus on the winners and maybe a few other things. I’ll try and find him next time
I’m out at Rattlesnake. Won’t be back there until late May but will be at Lovelock
      on the 19th.
