OLD TIMERS ROCK THE SANDBOX

FERNLEY, NV (April 22) – This weekend the Reno chapter of the Old Timers hosted a round of their national series. The site was the Sand Box as its known, or the Fernley/Wadsworth Lions Motocross Track.

The format is five timed motos; three on Saturday and two Sunday. This time there were over 150 riders that showed up for the weekend’s action although some of them chose to only race Saturday.

After Sunday’s rider’s meeting both the National and Canadian Anthem were played and everyone was ready ride and race.

First up were riders in three 60+ classes launched in two groups. Up front Mark Kaestner, 62-years-young riding in the 60+ Master class just took off and left everyone in his dust during Sunday’s second moto, which gave him a sweep of the weekend.

Mark Kaestner, a 60+ Master racer on his way to sweeping the weekend.

“Great weekend, everybody had a pretty good time I think,” he said.

Then he thanked his wife, God and his sponsors, Pro Pilot Suspension, Portland Yamaha and 60 Helmets.

Next up were the oldest and most veteran riders with those in the 60+ Novice class being the kids in the field.

After the gate dropped the battle for the lead was between Bill Maxim and Kerry Barnes. They went back and forth and even pulled an inside-outside pass on a lapper early in the second moto.

The lead dual went down to the final two laps but in the end Barnes, from Reno, won this battle however a second place finish for Maxim earned the weekend’s over all victory.

Old Timer's Nationals

Battle for the lead in the 70+ Expert Class. Kerry Barnes leads overall winner Bill Maxim in their final moto on Sunday.

“He (Maxim) beat me the last three races so we were just dicing back and forth,” Barnes said. “I’m always second behind him, Bill’s a legend and I just can’t catch him..”

Behind them came the two in the Methuselah divisions. Doug McCaleb in the 75+ Class and Dick Lyons in the 80+ Class.

Old Timer's National

Dick Lyons, an 83-years-young racer, was the oldest Old Timer racing at Fernley this weekend.

Asked about the weekend Lyons said, “I’m winning it, I’m winning it. I’ve been racing with the Old Timers since 1975, over all since the 60’s, out there with Malcom Smith and those guys. But I’m not a professional, just a schoolteacher that happens to ride and I happen to be healthy. I’ve got to thank my lovely bride Patricia of 60-years that let’s me do this.”

The next two divisions were the “kids,” of the weekend in the 40+ and 50+ divisions. In that race Tim Tynan’s runaway victory gave him the overall for the weekend even though he was second in Sunday’s first moto.

“I won all the motos but one, I got second in the first moto today,” he said. “The track is good, they did an awesome job on the on the prep all weekend. It’s not my favorite layout but they did the best they could with it and made it for a lot of fun.”

Then he thanked Steve at Shock Therapy, Mike Marquez at Click Suspension Labs and Cycle West for their great deals on all the parts.

Old Timer's National

Local chapter member Kevin Hargett on his way to winning the 40+ Expert class overall.

The other winner in that race was a Nevada member and local Kevin Hargett, who won the 40+ expert overall.

Next up was another combined race with the 40+ Intermediate and the 50+ Expert Classes. Layne “Hole Shot,” Kolbet lived up to his nickname by taking both hole shots and in the second moto led for about three laps before fading to fourth, which was his overall finish for the weekend.

Up front Kevin “Danger” Granger was in the lead during the second moto and just ran away with it. Even though he ended up second in the day’s first moto he had enough wins to get the weekend’s overall victory.

“They did such an awesome job here, I can’t stress it enough,” he said. “Anybody that hears this needs to come this is an awesome place. Been a good weekend for me.”

Then he thanked PDR Motorsports from Milton Freewater, Oregon.

The other class 40+ Intermediate has a Nevada 1-2-2 sweep. It also had the rider that came the farthest, Vincent Lanz from British Columbia, Canada.

Those three Nevada riders were Chris J. Leone, the class winner, Jeromie D. Sorhouet, and Chad Johnson.

Next came the largest class of the weekend, 50+ Intermediate. Over all there were 21 riders signed up but three of them never raced during the weekend and three only raced on Saturday.

When the gate fell to start the second moto Eric Mudgett took off and left everyone in his dust. The two local riders Bob Woebbeking and Reno chapter president Jeff McCollum ended up eighth and 16th for the weekend.

“I took first place in all five motos but I’ve never won one in four years,” Mudgett said. “The track is a fun rough ride but its safe. Always want to thank my wife Shawn and my partners Allen and Linda, who came with us this weekend an helped float some of the bill for this ride. Unfortunately Allen broke his arm yesterday, he still here rooting me on and helping me out.”

The final OT race for the day combined the 40+ Novice and 50+ Novice riders.

Tony Clements won the 40+ victory and also swept the weekend. In the 50+ division Nevada’s Doug Wollum would win both of Sunday’s motos but both seconds and his Saturday wins gave Mark Dugan the overall victory for the weekend.

“My first two motos went pretty poor as I tipped over,” Wollum, a Nevada member, said after taking the final checkered. “It was great fun.”

Then the weekend’s overall winner Mark Dugan said, “Racing all weekend has been great. This guy (Wollum) once he gets by me I can’t hang with him for the second half but other than that it’s been a good race.”

Then he thanked Factor Connection Suspension, Fly Racing, Recluse Clutch, Factory Effects (sp?), Lucas Oil as well as his wife Rebecca Barton that lets him race.

Considering the age of many of the riders and the amount of motos there were very few injuries but one rider did need to go and get evaluated Saturday. The worst incident occurred during the big bike support race Saturday. That rider was injured enough to get an ambulance ride but his condition is unknown when this was posted.

(There were support races but the results didn’t include the final motos so I really can’t use them. Sorry.)

Now all the riders head back to their respective homes and wait for the next round in the Old Timer’s National Series.

REPORTER’S NOTE: There is a picture gallery at the end of the results. While I’m am shooting with an article in mind there was another photographer there getting shots of all the riders.

He is Jason Brummond and you can reach him either with a phone call to 971-533-4765 or e-mail him at photo13media@gmail.com.

The rider that crashed in the big bike support race is still in the hospital, but stable.

    1. Dan McGee / Post Author

Sorry to hear that news but glad he’s stable. Due to the law I can’t mention
his name unless he or a family member gives me permission. So I either see
the person being transported or ask the medics if they had to transport anyone.
That way I stay within the law and don’t get the medics in trouble. Please give
that rider my best wishes for a speedy recovery and thanks for letting me know.
