RACING PREVIEW: MAY 24 TO 27

RENO, NV (May 23) – As we head into the biggest racing weekend of the year Racing Preview has events listed for this region as well as national and international.

First of all there are a couple of cancellations to note. Originally this weekend was supposed to be a triple-header for local racers but it’s not to be as both Lovelock Speedway and Fernley 95A Speedway have canceled their events.

Not all is lost as on Saturday Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon is going to run with the car and outlaw karts. As usual there is a 6 p.m. start to the cars while the karts begin a few hours earlier in the afternoon.

To the south Tonopah is celebrating Jim Butler days and the speedway will be in action. One featured event is the North vs South Dwarf Car Shootout.

Here at home there are two events and the first is tonight, Thursday at 7:30 p.m when Need2Speed holds its first round as the track is part of the American E-Kart Championship.

Various tracks have formed a league where the local champion earns a cash prize and is sent to Chicago in August for the national championships worth $10,000 to the winner

Classic Chevys of Reno

Classic Chevys of Reno hosts their Summer Salute this Saturday.

Another event in Reno is on Saturday at Rancho San Rafael. The Classic Chevys of Reno are having a car show, The Summer Salute, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. to benefit veterans.

OTHG Nationals

The Reno chapter of the Over The Hill Gang hosts a national round this weekend.

To the east at the Fernley MX track the local chapter of the Over The Hill Gang are hosting a round of the OTHG National series. The event starts around 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday so a rider’s combined finishes determines where their overall finish is.

Over the hill there are two competing Saturday night events.

The Saturday Night series will be at Riverfront MX track while MMX is also having another of its Saturday Under the Lites races.

There are two places to check for further information. For Riverfront, Prairie City and E Street call the hotline at 775-265-7223 and for the other please check www.mmxracing.com.

This is the biggest racing weekend of the year so TV Land and the Internet have many offerings for the race fan.

While Daytona Beach, Florida is the spiritual home of NASCAR it’s real home is Charlotte, North Carolina and that’s where the top two series race this weekend.

Thursday begins at 11:30 a.m. on Fox Sports 1 as NASCAR Cup practice gets going followed by NASCAR Race Hub and Xfinity practice. Then at 4 p.m. the Cup cars qualify followed by an ARCA race at Charlotte.

Friday is an off day for NASCAR but not so for the Indy Car series.

NBC Sports gets things rolling at 8 a.m. with the annual Cab Day practice where teams racing in the 500 get to fine-tune their cars. The Indy Lights race follows that and later at 11:30 a.m. there is a pit stop competition for those racing on Sunday.

Saturday is another day full of events starting at 10 a.m. on Fox Sports 1 with the Xfinity race from Charlotte.

Pro Motocross

Lucas Oil Motocross is at Glen Helen for this weekend’s race.

Later there is split coverage of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross series racing at Glen Helen. MAVTV starts things at 1 p.m. with the first motos while the second set begins at 3 p.m. and is shown on NBC Sports.Over on the Internet, www.fanschoice.tv begins things at 11 a.m. with the Springfield TT, part of the American Flat Track series. Then at 3:30 p.m. there is a race streamed from Berlin Raceway followed at 4 p.m. by one from Langley Speedway.

On Sunday the Harley-Davidson Springfield Mile race begins at 8 a.m. and again is part of the American Flat Track series.

Now back to TV Land.

Sunday is a huge day for race fans. ESPN gets things rolling at 6:05 a.m. as the Formula One drivers compete in the Grand Prix of Monaco. With only a few changes these high tech machines race on essentially the same course that was used in the 1920’s.

Over on ABC there is a double header starting at 8 a.m. when the Indy 500 begins. Following that the network will repeat the Monaco Grand Prix.

Starting at 3 p.m. FOX carries the Coca-Cola 600 from Charlotte as the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup drivers compete in their longest race of the year.

For comparison the Indy Car drivers will run around 200 mph on a two and a half mile track for 500 miles while those in NASCAR race 600 miles on a one and a half mile track.

That’s it for this weekend. Please if you can do get out and see a race live as there is nothing like it for color, speed and excitement.

And on Monday do take a few minutes to pause and consider what Memorial Day is all about. The ceremony at the Fernley Veteran’s Cemetery begins at 11 a.m.
