COREY HERRING MEMORIAL RACE AT HONEY LAKE

MILFORD, CALIF (June 17) – For the past five years MRANN racers have competed in the Corey Herring Memorial Race, which honors a young racer lost on Father’s Day. It’s also known as the “Go Big or Go Home,” race and again it was staged at the Honey Lake Motocross Track.

Racing at Honey Lake is always a challenge as it combines motocross sections as well as cross country parts and includes a pretty big hill for the big bikes to negotiate. This year Mother Nature added some elements to make things even more challenging for the racers.

On this course the big bike classes , that run on Sunday have separate events starting with the Novice, then Amateur and finally the Experts. For the expert winner his first lap was a bit of a challenge.

MRANN

Austin Serpa just ran away from everybody to score a dominate win in the Expert race.

“I probably fell down four times on the first lap,” winner Austin Serpa said after taking the checkered flag. “I really enjoyed this race, the rain made it awesome, the first lap rocks were slippery, my suspension was pretty stiff for this stuff but I still had lots of fun.

“Technical sections were good, like I said first lap I took a pretty good digger in the ravine then just a couple over here in the motocross track but it was good overall.”

Then Serpa thanked his father for getting him to the races and wished him a Happy Father’s Day. Then he added thanks to sponsors FMF, RPM, KTM Racing Team, Just 1 Helmets, Nitro Mousse, Siri Boots,  Maxxis Tires and DDC.

After a stretch of good and warming weather the elements closed in as the Experts got ready to start their two-hour race. By the time the banner was dropped the wind was howling along with pretty heavy rain and hail.

MRANN

Racing through the rain and hail Dallas Serpa (909) leads his brother Austin and Stephen Helms as the Expert race begins.

First on point with the hold shot was Dallas Serpa as the led the charge up the hill to a sharp righthander. It was there that one rider had a tumbling get off and needed some attention from the medics.

Up front the Serpa brothers continued their chase until Austin finally took over the lead. From that point on he steadily increased his lead and would finish a full three minutes ahead of his younger brother Dallas.

As the two brothers basically left everyone in, well first their mud then dust, Darren Rahlues ended up in third four minutes behind the leader while Steve Tichenor was over a minute later in fourth and Sean Berryman crossed the line a minute after that.

One finisher, Austin Wilson had a busy weekend as he graduated from high school the previous evening.

At the top of the Expert age scale Greg Burns won the Over 60 class while Danny Young topped the Over 50 class.

One rider making his first MRANN start of the year was Reece Honea, the 2017 points champion. His strong run ended when a chain broke that took out some of the lower part of his motor.

Right at the very end of the Expert race it started a very light sprinkle and during the event a thunderstorm passed the course but didn’t go over it.

The Amateurs were the ones blessed by the weather as the morning rain stopped, sun came out and they had prime dirt to race on for their 90-minute event.

MRANN

Reggie Wheeler leads the Amateur charge as their race begins.

When the banner dropped Reggie Wheeler led the charge but Jacob Davis was sweeping in from the outside and would soon be toward the front.

Later in the race Mikey Majors took over the lead followed by Russell Tongum, Michael Flower and Riley Wood with Davis holding own fifth.

MRANN

Mikey Majors does a wheelie on his way to winning the Amateur race.

By now the rain had drained off most of the dirt so traction was great although there were probably some muddy spots. One of them was at the exit of the scoring chute so riders were either careful or soon found out they needed to be.

Up front Majors finished about two minutes ahead of second place Tongum who was only 28 seconds ahead of third place Flower with Wood about a minute behind him.

As luck would have it the only woman in the race Beth Legenbauer arrived at the timing chute seconds after the checkered came out so she didn’t have to do an extra lap.

MRANN

Although she didn’t win the race Beth Legenbauer was the first Amateur to get the checkered flag.

The checkered comes out at a certain time so the first rider to receive it isn’t the winner. Legenbauer was actually 35th so the leaders were about half way around the course.

“The course was really fun, the dirt was amazing in most spots it was a little slick but there were some great spots on this course,” she said. “I think I need to work on my fast speed stuff rather than on my slow. I seem pretty comfortable in the rocks but I’ve got to get better at really hitting it hard.”

Then she thanked RMS and CMS as well as her wonderful husband, who she wished a Happy Father’s Day.

A little while later the overall winner Majors arrived and took the checkered flag. Amazingly he completed his final lap with a flat rear tire.

“It was pretty cool,” he said after finishing the race. “The downhill is fun, it wasn’t too hard, really rocky, really slippery, especially with a flat tire. It got really nice, the dirt got perfect, it was fun.”

Then he thanked is parents for their support.

The Novice field was the largest of the day with 48 riders taking the start although seven would not finish the race for various reasons.

Mother Nature’s gift to these riders was rain as well as a slick and sloppy course. Made for some interesting riding to say the least.

Unless a rider used roll off goggles many would come by the pits and just throw their goggles off as they had gone through their tear offs. Many finished with their faces splattered with mud.

MRANN

Chris McPartan finished second in the Novice race.

Up front Patrick Hindman was on point and finished over two minutes ahead of runner up Chris McPartan. After them third through fifth were separated by only 38 seconds as Garrett Burnett, Arie Furlong and Lance Smith took those three places.

MRANN

Patrick Hindman goes through the mud at the scoring chute as he wins the Novice race.

“The course was just like that, muddy and slippery but it was a lot of fun,” Hindman said after finishing. “You’ve got to stay smooth and make sure you squeeze your bike tight, that’s all I can really say. And I need to thank everybody here and the Herring family.”

As usual Tina Bodden has continued her program of hole shot awards. Those went to Patrick Hindman (Novice), Reggie Wheeler (Amateur) and Dallas Serpa (Expert).

• The first part of the weekend was run on Saturday when the Pee Wees, Mini Bikes, Women and Bombers ran their races. On this day the weather was great and Mother Nature had no surprises.

In the Pee Wee race Jesse Miller, a 65cc Novice rider won the overall while Peyton Mass, a 7 and older 50cc rider was second.

Moving up to the Mini Bikes Walker McGreal, a 100cc Amateur racer won the overall while 100cc Expert rider Carson Calder was second. The first 65cc Expert rider was fourth place Jordan Maas.

When the Women/Bomber race ended the top there were a trio of women experts, Christina Courtny, Taylor Kemp and Camie Ingram. The lone Bomber finisher was Jason Danen, who ended up 13th.

The Herring family uses this memorial to their son to fund a scholarship program for deserving young MRANN riders that have graduated from high school. On Saturday night they have a raffle for prizes and other things to help with this effort.

For the Herring family it’s a very emotional weekend made even more than usual as on Sunday morning Penny found that her father has passed away. Despite this she and her husband greeted the finishing riders at the end of each race and helped hold the starting banner.

We here at Nvracingnews wish to extend our condolences to Penny and the Herring family on their loss.

Now MRANN takes its summer break as the spring series is over. The next race will be the weekend of September 8 & 9 when they assemble and return to the desert.
