DESERT PARK RACEWAY: HOT RACING AND BUGS

STEAD, NV (July 15) – Desert Park Raceway was the site of the fourth round for this year’s Northern Nevada Kart Club’s season. Warm temperatures didn’t slow down the racers but some bugs did, at least for a while.

Early in the day bugs, flying ants, plagued the scoring tower as well as the corner stations. Fortunately Ecolab was summed and they made quick work of the pests but the break morphed into the lunch break.

After the pests were dealt with racing resumed finishing the first heat, then they ran the second heat and the mains started. Several of the mains could be classed as races of the day.

One of them was the combined Senior/Masters LO206 class, which had the largest amount of starters. Fifteen racers took the green but the duel for the victory was one of the races of the day.

Up front leader Nick Short had Steve Dow right on his back bumper with Jacob Ciari close behind them. Further back Daniel Gallaher and Alec Beaudoin were disputing fourth place while the duo of Brud Beaudoin and Bryce Berry were dueling over sixth place.

With five to go Ciari and Short exchanged the lead twice as Dow had slipped back to a close third.

NNKC

In Senior Masters it was a three-way duel for the lead. Here eventual winner Nick Short leads runner up Jacob Ciari and third place Steve Dow. They finished in that order.

In the end Short managed to gain a small gap over Ciari, who had Dow on his back bumper. They finished in that order.

Further back in the pack Harrell Fischer, in ninth place won the Master’s division.

“The race was great, I’m obviously happy with the result. I knew the local guys coming into this race were very, very quick. They were all over me the whole race and it was keeping me going, ” Short said after the past race weigh in. “They all did a great job, they all know this track very, very well my goal was to beat them and I did it.”

Then Short gave special thanks to his Stepfather, who makes his racing possible as well as  Rodney Rivera at Nevada Kart Sport for helping tune the kart.

The day ended with another race of the day when the Junior 2 LO206 Class ran their main. On the green Cain Fredricks held the point with Tanner Schultz close behind him.

Back in the Chase Dulude moved forward and eventually took over second. After that it was a nose-to-tail duel for the rest of the race.

NNKC

It was a green to checkered battle for the Junior 2 LO206 victory. Here eventual winner Cain Fredricks holds off Chase Dulude while Tanner Schultz isn’t far behind in third.

In the end Fredricks, who came up from Sacramento, held off a challenge and won the day with Dulude and Schultz taking the next two spots.

After the race the winner said, “It was really close, everyone was right there. First, second, third, we were all running the same times. I had a fun-day and everyone made it clean.

Then he thanked Nevada Kart Sport and his parents.

TAG Masters was another race of the day. Over the past few years this class had virtually disappeared but thanks to Mike Arnold, who owns several of these karts, it’s making a comeback.

Adding interest was that the Grand Master of Shifter Kart racing Mitch Kennedy was driving one of them. In the field was Kevin Jerome whose father Rick was one of NNKC’s founders.

On the green Kennedy got the jump but Jerome soon took the point. However he had Kennedy just about on his back bumper for the rest of the race. Lap after lap they tore around the track usually nose-to-tail or so close a large blanket would have covered both of them.

Kevin Jerome leads Mitch Kennedy as they duel for the TAG Master’s victory.

In the end Jerome won with Kennedy a close second while Arnold was further back in third.

After the race Jerome said, “It’s been 10 years since I’ve raced but I’ve driven a little bit here and there. That was fun, lots of fun. Luckily I had a little bit more power than him (Kennedy) on the straight always but in technique he’s got me on the corners. I’ve got a 125 and am working on it to get it back out here.”

Then he thanked Mike Arnold for letting him drive his kart and Mitch the mechanic.

This time there were three F-125 shifter karts on hand. They used a standing start and on the green Jeff Wamre took off with Dennis Hill giving chase.

Eventually the third kart driven by Dean Andrews, who briefly led, fell out of the race with some kind of problem.

Up front Wamre first extended his lead then later slipped into the clutches of Hill. In the final laps there was a small error that allowed Hill to take the lead and motor off to claim the victory.

NNKC

For much of the F-125 race Jeff Wamre was in the lead but in the final laps Dennis Hill (92) got past and won their main.

“The plan was to be patient, too see where his mistakes were and make it happen,” Hill said. “The first laps were difficult, had to get the tires worked in. Half way tires started working in, started feeling good, the engine the go kart and later in started getting over steer. But I knew that was going to happen so me and the go kart just worked together.:

Thanked his father Kevin Hill as without that support this racing wouldn’t happen.

Except for a brief time when Mike McMullen lead the KA-100 race was all Zack Rivera. Once he took the lead Rivera motored off to the next area code.

Only two Junior 1 LO206 racers were on hand and Jack Schrady had an easy time of it.

He is getting faster with each race and should be a threat when he moves into the Junior 2 class. Collin Hill, the new driver ended up second but he also is getting the hang of driving a kart.

Now Desert Park is silent except for when racers are there for test sessions. The next NNKC event will be on August 5, which is two weeks before the KPX event, which will be a night race on the 19th.

Some NNKC drivers that are competing in the KPX series they’ll be heading for Monterey next weekend for the next event in that series.
