FERNLEY 95A SPEEDWAY – SEARS WINS EPIC RACE

FERNLEY, NV (Aug. 11) – Fernley 95A Speedway not only hosted the Nevada Pro Stock Association but dedicated the night’s racing to the family of Chris Juhl, who was badly burned in a pit accident at Fallon on July 4th.

Track owner Dan Simpson informed everyone at the driver’s meeting that all proceeds from the night would be donated to the family to help with their medical expenses.

It was a great night ending with an epic race by two of the Nevada Pro Stock Association drivers. At the end first and second place had slightly over 2 tenths of a second between them.

Jay “Wing Man,” Sears collects the winner’s money and trophy after winning the Nevada Pro Stock Association main event.

“That was a fun race, I’m glad Trav ran me clean. He was pretty the better car of the night,” Jay “Wingman,” Sears said after winning the Pro Stock feature. “I was trying not to make any mistakes because I knew if I did he’d get me. I knew he was there I could hear him bottom and top, just knew if I didn’t make a bobble he have a tough time getting around me.”

Then he thanked car owner Travis Petersen and the entire crew.

Attrition eliminated two cars before the main. Robert Mull’s night ended in a heat when rear drive gears failed. In the next heat transmission failure put Bill Pearson on the sidelines.

Before the green started the main the car of Antonio Aragon gave up the ghost so he was unable to answer the green.

When the nine survivors took the green Sears took off followed by Robbie Grace and Travis White. Right after that there was a wild spin in Turn 3 but that driver got going in time.

Up front Sears and White began to pull away turning the race into a two-man duel.

On lap 11 things came to an abrupt halt when the car of Alan Pace had a fire in the engine compartment. The safety made short work of that but he was out for the night and now there were eight cars left.

When racing resumed it was the Sears/White show while Grace and Darrick Rauscher were giving chase. Another caution slowed things after that.

For most of the Pro Stock feature this was about as far apart as Jay Sears (56) and Travis White ever got.

After the green both leaders resumed their private battle behind while there was a three-way battle for third as Grace, James Gonzales and Rauscher chased one another.

Eventually Gonzales and Rauscher seemed to have tangled causing a caution but both were able to continue their duel with Grace.

In the end Sears reached the checkered flag just before White followed by the trio of Grace, Gonzales and Rauscher.

After the dust settled White, who turned the fastest lap of 17.831 seconds said, “Another lap or two, who knows. I kept having to shut it down for him going into the corners, every time I got a good run I had to shut it down and that took my momentum away. He drove his butt off so there wasn’t a whole lot I could have done. You know I’ll take second any day when ever it’s racing like that.”

Then he thanked Eternal Images for their wraps to his car, Miller Entertainment, R.J. Landscaping, The Treasure Hut, Battle Born Performance, Silver State Freight Brokerage.

The IMCA Modified has a guest started to get their main event going.

Only three IMCA Modifieds were on hand and when the green waved James Thibodeaux took off. Paris Archie was doing his best to run him down until he caused a caution after clipping the front straight wall.

Once racing resumed Thibodeaux took off and roared to the victory. Archie was able to recover and took second after he passed Robert Robles, who finished third.

“It was great, it’s kind of easy when you’re starting up front so it was nice being up there,” Thibodeaux said at the trophy presentation.

Then he thanked his car owner Jim Deyoe.

The biggest field of the night was Hobby Stocks as 13 of them took the green flag to start their main event. Up front Alex Kniestedt was on point but things slowed after a spin in Turn 2.

On the restart Kniestedt still held the lead only to spin at the exit of Turn 2. The race had to be stopped to clean up the track as two of the cars collected in the melee had to be towed to the pits.

When racing resumed Rick Miller jumped into the lead followed by Randy Boyd. Then they left everyone in their dust as they dueled for the lead.

The Hobby Stock race was a two-man duel for the lead between Rick Miller (88) and Randy Boyd.

After running nose-to-tail for several laps the lead duo caught some lap traffic. Miller was blocked on the low line while Boyd chose the high side and took over the lead.

Finally, with six laps to go Miller got passed the lap traffic and the chase was on. Unfortunately there were too few laps so Boyd took the victory followed by Miller and Michael Burns.

Randy Boyd wins the Hobby Stock feature.

“It was intense, I didn’t think I was going to get around him then he left the door open and I just didn’t life,” Boyd said later.

Then he thanked his wife and pit crew for their help.

When the Mini Stock main began Robert Crane was on point until he got loose in a turn due to a flat tire. That’s when Jesse Showe took over the point but soon Ray Blankenship grabbed the lead.

Finally things came to a halt after Showe hit the backstretch wall after Turn 2. The officials halted the race until they could check on him.

Ray Blankenship wins the Mini Stock main.

Once they knew Showe was uninjured the green came out again. However since Blankenship was basically the only car running he got the checkered flag.

The next race for Fernley 95A Speedway is Friday, August 24th.
