BATTLE BORN MX AT THE SANDBOX

FERNLEY, NV (Sept. 30) – Battle Born MX staged round three of its fall series at the Sandbox, or the Fernley/Wadsworth Motocross Track as its officially known. The host club was the Over The Hill Gang and there was a good turn out of riders for a wonderful day of racing.

All told there were 363 entries although several riders rode in more than one race. Still it took 23 motos to get every group in although the club only raced once so the day ended with 45 motos total.

One of the big draws was the 200% payback for 250/450 pro race and there were 10 of them on hand. In the end one of the young lions scored the victory but it wasn’t a cakewalk.

T.J. Taylor flies over a jump on his way to winning the 250/450 Pro motos.

“I just try to get off early, ride consistent and get the win,” T.J. Taylor said after his second moto. “That last one was pretty close, he (Austin Serpa) was behind me in the other one, I got a little tired but still pulled it off.”

Having just turned pro Taylor has two overall victories in the first three rounds and of course he thanked the family business, Testa Motor Sports for their support.

When the gate dropped on their second moto Serpa was on point until Taylor got past. After that the chase was on as they turned the race into a two-rider duel for the overall victory.

Taylor reached the finish first while Serpa had to settle for the runner up spot. Behind the lead duo in the overall were third place Dylan Galliett followed by Garret Ioppolo and Michael Jepsen.

Later Serpa used a first and second place finish to take the overall in the Big Bike Open although Galliett did win the second moto for that class.

BBMX

Austin Serpa won used a 1-2 finish to win the Big Bike overall victory.

The other pro race, 125/250 was part of a three class combined race where 125/250 Intermediates and 25+ Open riders competed with the pros.

First to reach the checkered flag at the second moto’s end was Ryan Ferris, who took the 25+ Open class victory. He also won the 2-Stroke Open overall as well.

“It was good, got off to a great start finally, haven’t had a good start all weekend but got out front, rode my own race and stayed smooth,” Ferris said.

BBMX

Ryan Ferris scored two victories for the day winning in 25+ Open as well as in the 2-Stroke Open motos.

Behind him Casey Carmichael, Alec Green and Landon Morand finished one-two-three in the Intermediate motos.

Three 125/250 pros raced with Aaron Siminoe winning the overall while Taylor was second ahead of Mitchell Keen.

BBMX

The 125/250 Pro overall winner was Aaron Siminoe, shown getting some big air.

Another race combined six classes but the overall winner of the second moto used to all but own the track. Scott Stillmock, the only 38+ Master, reached the finish first and later won the only Club moto for the day.

After the race he commented on how it was a good day and unlike in the spring he gets out and rides at least once a month although he’d like to be in better shape.

BBMX

Another double winner was Scott Stillmock, who won the Club race and in 38+ Masters.

Since each class rides two motos anyone winning more than one class will have a busy day, especially if they earn a double. Only one rider scored three victories, which meant riding in three different races and that was young Ollie M. Bonner, who won in 85cc Junior, Open and Super Mini.

BBMX

Right after a combination race began  Rogen Hill, who won the 85cc Intermediate race leads 85cc Junior Ollie M. Bonner, who won three overall victories that day.

At the top of the age scale were 58+ Junior winner Patrick L. Fye and Chris Ober, who raced solo in 58+ Intermediate. Below them were Troy Decker in 52+ Junior and David Thomas, the only 52+ Intermediate rider.

Hayden Loses was the Women’s A winner while Amanda Ross won the B division. In Schoolboy Casey Carmichael topped the dozen riders in that class.

Going down the age scale there are some positive signs for the future of the sport in this area.

The 250/450 Beginner class has 13 riders while the Junior class had 17 that raced. Moving down to the 125/250 classes there were so many Beginners it had to be divided with 18 in one group and 19 in the other.

Not to be left out the 125/250 Junior class had 24 riders fill that gate but when the dust settled Jared Mariscal won the overall.

Moving into the 85cc Beginner class there were 17 starting and Luke Kunkel was the overall winner. In 65cc 19 Beginners raced with William Teninty winning while open race had 18 racers and the overall victor was Rowdy Richardson.

BBMX

Drew Mason was the Pee Wee Intermediate winner.

The Pee Wees are the next generation and their numbers are also pretty good with 16 Beginners on hand. At the end of the day the winners were in Beginner Jevin Hubbard, in Junior Keagan Brocchini, in Intermediate Drew Mason while Jaiden Roberts was the Open winner.

A Pee Wee start is in two parts. First the gate drops and these youngsters take off. Then the parents stream around the course to cheer and help and rider that is having a problem.

All in all everyone seemed to have a great day, the weather cooperated and many complimented the new track layout.

Now everyone gets a couple of weeks rest before the series heads east to Carlin for the fourth round on October 13th and 14th.

REPORTER’S NOTE: There is a photo gallery after the results. I only have a small part of the photos I took but if one would like a proof or photo I do take orders. Just have to see if I have a photo of that rider.
