SEASON PREVIEW 2019: MOTORCYCLES

RENO, NV (Feb.11) – First Season Preview will cover the two-wheeled world of Motorcycles as they start and finish the racing in our region. From the desert to motocross in Fernley as well as the flat track race in Carson City these are always action packed events.

•   DESERT RACING:

MRANN

MRANN’s first race of the season honors the late Bob “Moto Mouth,” Cavakis.

First up for the Season Preview is this weekend when MRANN begins its season. The Trail Blazers club honors the late Bob Cavakis with the Moto Mouth Memorial 100.

The location is about 10 miles north of the Nightingale exit on I-80, east of Fernley. From what has been posted it’s going to be a fast course.

As usual the youngest racers and those moving up the ranks go on Saturday using short courses. Also racing are the Saturday women and Bombers while the big bikes race on Sunday.

Then after a short break the second race in the season happens on the weekend of March 9/10 and from there, with a summer break events stretch into October.

For further information on MRANN and the series please check their website at www.racemrann.com. Or one can access their Face Book page.

MRANN is an umbrella organization made up of individual clubs that stage one of the races. Riders in those clubs don’t get points for their weekend as they are expected to assist running the race.

The 2019 schedule for MRANN is, February 16/17, March 9/10 and 23/24, April 13/14, June 15/16 and 29/30, October 5/6 and 26/27.

•   MOTOCROSS:

BBMX

Schedule for the spring BBMX races. The fall schedule is still being worked on.

This area is also blessed with a vibrant Motocross community racing with Battle Born Motocross. Their season begins the weekend of March 16/17 out at the Fernley track or the Sandbox as it’s known. From there the series goes on the road racing at Winnemucca and Carlin before returning to Fernley.

Season Preview currently has only six races scheduled going into summer. After a break there are seven more planned and that schedule will be announced later.

On a racing weekend Saturday is for practice from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. while Sunday gets an early start with a 9 a.m. start to the first motos.

For further information please check the website at www.battlebornmx.com or their Face Book Page.

Another event to look forward to is the two-day Over The Hill Gang National round held on Memorial Day weekend. This two-day event is a tradition and brings riders from around the west.

There are motos both days and Saturday ends with a BBQ. A rider’s total finishes determines their final standings.

•   OTHER NEWS & EVENTS:

+ April for the Season Preview brings a classic race to the area, the Virginia City Grand Prix. It draws riders from the west and Canada and victory in this demanding race is something everyone wants to claim.

Virginia City Grand Prix

Saturday is when the pros, expert and amateur riders tackle the toughest course. It’s a timed race so four hours after the green waves the checkered comes out.

Of course this means the fastest are probably somewhere on the course but they arrive at the finish soon enough.

Sunday brings the Novice, Women, Bomber and Vintage bikes as well as the most senior racers. And this year other bikes really not meant for this type of racing can also enter.

The racers leave in rows of 10 so corrected time is key to determining where they actually finish. With the pros, due to their speed it’s usually straight up.

Sunday however, with the differences in skill levels corrected time really comes into play. This means if a rider, way in the10th row can complete the course faster than anyone else they are the winner, and Sunday is a three-hour timed race.

Both days bring huge numbers of riders and it’s a wild event to say the least. Entries are coming in right now and for further information please go to www.vcgp.com.

+ Sadly the Endurocross series won’t be returning to Reno this year. Seems another company bought the series and we’re not on the calendar. It was a great indoor event and hope they might return again.

+ The week of August 14 to 17 is when the longest off-road race in America happens when Best In The Desert presents General Tire Vegas to Reno event. The racing begins Friday with motorcycles going first and the event ends in the Dayton area.

For further information please check the series website at www.bitd.com.

+ Season Preview also highlights another event a week later, the Carson Flat Track races in Fuji Park at the south end of town. This year the event has expanded with racing starting Friday night, doors at 6, racing at 7:30 with the pros.

Carson City Flat Track Races

Pros will race both nights at this year’s Carson City Flat Track races.

Saturday gets an early start for the amateurs as doors open at 9 a.m. and their races begin at 11. From there it’s a blizzard of heats and mains.

Then at 7 there are opening ceremonies with pro racing beginning at 7:30 p.m. This year there are $20,000 dollars in prize money up for grabs.

That’s it for this edition of coming attractions. Next time I’ll be covering oval tracks in our region as well as drag racing and go-karts.
