OLD TIMER NATIONAL STIRS UP THE SANDBOX

FERNLEY, NV (April 7) – The local chapter of the Old Timers hosted a round of their national series at the Sandbox this weekend. Its formally known as the Fernley/Wadsworth Lion’s Motocross track and Mother Nature smiled on the event with great weather.

Saturday is the long day as riders raced in three motos while on Sunday there are only two motos. The riders ranged from the youngsters in their 40’s to an 84-year old and all of them gave it their best.

At the top of the age group there were three classes with 70 year olds as well as a 75 and 80 plus class. All of these riders showed the kids how one can keep riding and racing longer than many believe.

Local OT chapter president Jeff McCollum took a picture of all these seniors on Saturday before the on track fun began.

When the final gate dropped Dan Fleming, 70+ Expert was on point but behind him Kerry Barnes, another 70+ expert giving chase. Further back Dick Lyons, whose plate showed he’s 84 years young, was keeping a steady pace.

Eventually Barnes, who is a local, took over the lead while Fleming slipped back to second. They finished in that order for Sunday and the weekend.

The 70+ Expert final moto came down to winner Kerry Barnes holding off a determined Dan Fleming (45).

“Yes a local guy winning,” Barnes said after his second first place finish on Sunday. ” It was fun, always fun if you’ve got somebody behind you or in front of you. The course is fast and fun for me. I’m a desert racer so, the sand is perfect.”

Then he thanked his wife and his new puppy.

Behind them Terry Messer won the 70+ Intermediate class while Russ Greenfield scored the 70+ Novice overall victory.

Topping the age brackets was Dick Lyons, who would have also won the Methuselah award if there was one.

Old Timer Nationals

The ageless Dick Lyons rolls into a corner on his way to winning the 80+ overall victory.

After finishing his fifth moto for the weekend he said, “I’m 84 this year and I’ll be 85 next year. I love this track because it doesn’t have a lot of long sweeping sand but it’s and rough, the rougher the better.”

Then he thanked his “lovely bride of 60 years,” Patty, who he said lets him ride.

At the other end of the age scale are the “kids,” in the 40 plus class. The fastest classes, who also had the longest moto, was the 50+ Master, 40+ Master and 40+ Expert race.

Right from the get go Tim Tynan, from the Sierra Chapter, left everyone is his dust. Even though he riders in the 50 plus class no one was even getting close to him as he swept the day.

Old Timer Nationals

Tim Tynan ran away from everybody to claim the 50+ Master class and score a sweep of the weekend.

“A clean sweep,” he said. “I had almost a perfect weekend, four or five hole shots and led almost every lap. Track’s really good, they did phenomenal, it’s really fun flowly, a little short but it gets good and rough and that’s’ what I need.

Then he thanked Steve at Shock Therapy, Cycle West, Dumonde Tech.

At the end of that last race A.J. Heckart was the 40 Plus Master winner while it was a local one-two in the Expert Class headed by winner Jason Shakespeare with Chris J. Leone in the runner-up spot. The lone woman winner was Lisa Heckman from Oregon, who rides in the 40+ Novice class.

The races are timed and most run 15 minutes plus one lap while the fastest ride for 20 minutes plus one lap.

Both the 60 plus Expert and Intermediate classes were large as they accounted for 27 riders that competed on both days. James Neff from Oregon was the Expert winner while Sierra chapter rider Bret Eckert won the Intermediate class while Carl Smith from Arizona was the Novice winner.

The biggest class overall was the 50 plus group. Between the Expert, Intermediate and Novice divisions there were 44 riders accounted for while the Master class only had five that competed both days.

Old Timer Nationals

In the final 50+ Expert moto Kevin Granger (751) would win but the weekend’s overall victory when to Aric Cool shown here chasing him.

One of the closet races of the day was the final 50 plus Expert moto. Aric Cool from Oregon started on point while Washington rider Kevin Granger gave chase.

In the end Granger won the moto but winning the war was Cool as his results from Saturday as well as winning the first Sunday moto earned him the weekend’s overall victory.

Nevada’s Mike McMurry won the Intermediate group as Alan Kesti was the Novice winner and Sierra member Tim Tynan was the Master’s winner.

Looking at the winners the Sierra chapter has the most over all victories with five while a trio had three each, Nevada, So Cal and Oregon. Washington riders took home two overall victories while Arizona scored one.

Riders mostly came from the west although at some were from Canada. Two riders were injured on Saturday but their conditions weren’t known when this article was posted.
