LOVELOCK, NV (May 11) – Despite a low car count the decision was made to go racing and race they did. Helping was Mother Nature setting the stage with great weather.
This was the first scheduled visit by the Northern Nevada Winged Sprints but only six of them showed up. Sadly the driveline in Bob Cooney’s car came off during the heat race and ended his night.
When the sprint car main began only three cars answered the green as the others had mechanical problems, which kept them back in the pits.
First on point was heat winner Dalton Christiani with the car of Bruce Ferrier giving chase. As the 15-lap race started winding down Ferrier closed in and took the lead.
Several laps from the end Christiani challenged for the lead but could not make the pass and fell back. After that it was all Ferrier’s race with Christiani finishing second while Jordan Garretson was a distant third.
Ferrier’s car has to be push started so after stopping to pick up the checkered flag the tow truck was summoned and pushed him to the front straight.
While there Ferrier said, “The track was nice, a little slick but kind of bun being out front and not to worry about anybody.”
Then he thanked Mark from Westchester Metals, Mike from Superior Hydraulics, Ron and Mart Tabor from Tabor Construction as well as Glen Lee from Old Iron.
Six IMCA Modifieds showed up with two of them being piloted by women drivers.
When the Modified heat race began Steven Anderson was on point with Ty Gamble and another car giving chase. During the race Steven Anderson had to drop out while Dominic Mace was unable to make the start.
Soon after the heat began Gamble was after the leader and soon took over the lead, which gave him the victory.
After intermission and the Sprint Car main while the Modifieds closed the evening.
Once again Anderson was on point when the green waved with Shawn La Roque and Anderson giving chase. There was one caution after the car of Dominic Mace slid up the Turn 4 banking and clipped the wall.
On the restart LaRoque jumped into the lead with Gamble and Anderson giving chase. Toward the end of the 20-lap event the top three spread out.
Later Gamble was closing and gave LaRoque a pretty good “nudge” as they were going through Turn 4. However all went well and neither was spun with the contact.
In the end LaRoque won followed by Gamble, Anderson and 15-year-old Kolbie Mace. Coming home in fifth was Dominic Mace but due to problems she wound up two laps down.
After his victory lap LaRocque said, “Started on the second row and made it to the front pretty quick. Track was really good, fast, a little slick on top so I was trying to stay on the bottom but every time I moved up it got a little bit faster so we just played the game and hung in there.”
Asked about the nudge he got from Gamble, he said, “He got into me at one corner there but I checked up there so he was all good.”

Next race for the bullring known as Lovelock Speedway is June 15 with a 7 p.m. scheduled start to the racing.
