FERNLEY, NV (MAY 12) – Warm weather and hot racing highlighted round 5 of the Battle Born MX spring series. While entries were slightly down it still took 20 motos to include all the classes and combinations.
Eight pros were on hand but one of them, Tony Evans was eliminated in a nasty looking get off during the first set of motos. Fortunately he was able to get up and walk back to the pits.
In the second 250/450 moto Gaige Demars briefly led until T.J. Taylor took the lead on the second lap. From that point on it was Taylor’s race as he left everyone in his dust.
Behind him Michael Jepsen and Dylan Galliett, who won the first moto, disputed second place but eventually finished in that order.
Also running in that race were two intermediate racers and Dylan Thorwaldson won both of those motos. Another double winner was Ryan Eager as he scored victories in 30+ Expert and 25+ Open.
In the 125/250 Pro Class T.J.Taylor scored his second victory of the weekend. Dylan Thorwaldson claimed his second victory by winning the intermediate class.
Schoolboy had a good field and 14 riders were in the first moto but when the second started only 11 were on the track. Two of them that didn’t start were Taye Pepper and Kyle Zimmer who finished one-two in the first go around.
In the lead after the second gate dropped were Jared Mariscal and Kai Kapahee. Both ran close together until the white flag lap when Mariscal carved out some breathing room as he headed for the win, which gave him the overall victory.
“He rode everywhere and I just heard his (Kapahee) bike so I just had to keep on pushing and not give up. On the last had a little bit but he was still right on me and I just had to keep on going.”
Then he thanked his parents, Testa Motorsports, Tech One Design and Go Pro.
One race combined three classes, Big Bike Open, 2-Stroke Open and 25+ Open. After the second moto began Ryan Eager was on point but being chased by Dylan Galliett.
After a race long pursuit Galliett finally managed to take the lead on the white flag lap and hang on to claim the victory and win the Big Bike Open class.
“Think I passed him on the outside over there,” Galliett said, “The track’s good, they just prepped it. Wish they didn’t as it’s super smooth as I like it rough but it’s good.
Then he thanked his parents, The Door Company and Answer.
Another close race came in the second 250/450 Beginner moto. After the start winner Seth Benedict was on point and never headed.
Sometimes the real race is in back of the leader and at the flag there was an almost side-by-side finish. Blake Ray took second by inches over Jake Williams.
The second 125/250 Junior was another close race at the end. Up front Nakana Domingo was on point but behind him there was a duel for second between Reile Cole and Collin Hutson.
Toward the end Cole took a firm grip on second and closed the gap with leader Domingo. In fact they were virtually nose-to-tail at the while flag but Domingo hung on to claim the victory.
For Scott Stillmock both Club motos were a bit different although he dominated both of them. In the first moto his sister Sedanna Losey was chasing him then slipped back to third as Michael Worrall took the runner up spot.
In the second Club moto once again Stillmock took off but this time professional barrel racer Michelle Skender chased him for the entire race.
In the end Stillmock, who also won the 40+ Master Class as well as the Club race made it a double.
After the Club race ended he said, “The race was a lot of fun, it’s our club race, it’s everyone in the club and we mainly get out there for fun laps and ride with everyone. It’s a bunch of different classes and abilities in one moto. A lot of fun.”
For Skender this season marks a return to racing motocross as usually she can be found on a horse barrel racing at various events. That final club moto was her best finish of the day as she also races in one of the 30+ races.
“I barrel race next weekend in Fallon,” she said after that moto. “That was a lot of fun. I just wanted to ride and get in shape again and these guys all suckered me into racing so here I am. That was blast and probably the best I’ve felt so far, that was fun.”
The women’s “A” class featured an Aunt-Niece duel when Shami Potratz won but was chased the entire race by Hayden Losey. In the “B” class Jennifer Keppek won followed by Claire Petrie and Haddleigh Kahabka.
At the top of the age ladder Mike McMurry won the 50+ Intermediate race while the 50+ Junior winner was Bobby Heeb.
The Pee Wee racers, or those in the 50cc classes are at the bottom of the age ladder. These youngsters are just starting their racing careers.
Sean Panora won the Beginner class while the Junior winner was Jevin Hubbard. Over in the Intermediate Class the winner was Jaiden Roberts while Gavin Giomi was the Open winner.
Moving up to the 65cc classes, where these young riders also have to learn how to shift gears in their bikes. Jevin Hubbard scored a double for the weekend as he won the Beginner Class.
Hub Losey was the Junior winner while Rocket Richardson won the Intermediate title while Rowdy Richardson was the Open winner.
Next rung on the ladder are the 85cc bikes. This is a rider’s last stop on the smaller bikes before moving up to the 125/250 big bike class.
Parker Ross is a nationally ranked 85cc rider that comes to Nevada to race. He is the only rider to score a triple for the weekend by winning in 85cc Intermediate, 85cc Open and Supermini.
Declan Kahabka was the 85cc Junior winner while the Beginner winner was Michael Chase.
Unfortunately Sunday had a lot of crashes and one young rider got a ride to the hospital to be checked while another went by private transportation.
While any crash is serious the one no one expected was when veteran photographer Josh Peterson was involved. Essentially he got a motorcycle in the face that left him with several cuts, a possible knee injury and a broken hand.
Fortunately he can recover from all these and the motocross community has shown him a great deal of support for him. Up to that point he had taken many photos of the racers and if any are interested one can see them at www.jspfilms.com or on his Face Book page.
Now everyone gets a couple of weeks off until the final round of the BBMX Spring Series. That will be on the weekend of June 1 and 2 out at Winnemucca.

The Woman’s “A” winner was Shami Potratz. The second Schoolboy moto was this close until the very end as winner Jared Marisal was chased by Kai Kapachee. Scott Stillmock scored a double by winning the Club and 40+ Master class. Michelle Skender flies through the air during the second Club moto. She’s a professional barrel racer but has returned to doing motocross. Dylan Galliett on his way to win the Big Bike Open Class. T. J. Taylor on his way to scoring a double as he won both the 250/450 and 125/250 Pro divisions. 
Russell Tonjum won the 250/450 Junior title. 
The 250/450 Beginner winner was Seth Benedict. 
Dylan Thorwaldson (150) is being chased by Tristen Mathisen at the start of a 125/250 Intermediate moto. Thorwaldson went on to also win the 250/450 Intermediate victory. 
Rowdy Richardson won the 65cc Open. 
Hub Losey won in 65cc Junior. 
Gaven Giomi won the 50cc Open title. In the 50cc Intermediate class the race was between Jason Roberts and Gaven Giomi. At the end Roberts scored the victory. Mike McMurry was at the top of the age ladder when he won the 50+ Intermediate victory. 
Bobby Heeb was the 50+ Junior winner. 
The 40+ Junior winner was Corey Mathisen. Ryan Eager was another rider that scored double victories.He won in 25+ Open and 30+ Expert. Parker Ross scored a triple when he won in three 85cc classes.
So it’s not Jason Roberts it’s JAIDEN ROBERTS #693 SHE races the 50cc open and intermmediate class and the 65cc open and junior class SHE and Gavin both qualified For Mammoth as well
