DESERT PARK RACEWAY – NNKC ROUND 4

STEAD, NV (June 3) – Desert Park Raceway was alive with the sound of go-kart racing. The occasion was round 4 of the Northern Nevada Kart Club series.

This time the race of the day was put on  they Senior LO206 class.

“I did a few changes to see if I could sneak by as the 18 (Kelly Chinander) gave me some problems in Heat 2. It worked early on but toward the end the tires definitely got warmer and she was right on top of me,” Jacob Ciari said after winning the race.

When the green flag waved and sent the 8-car field roaring into Turn 1 Chinander, who won the second heat, was on point. Soon Ciari closed up and the battle was on.

Eventually he did take the lead but his rival was close behind and he knew it.

“Yes she made sure I know how close she was,” Ciari said.

NNKC
In Senior LO206 the race for the lead was usually measured in inches. Here eventual winner Jacob Ciari is chased by runner up Kelly Chinader.

Lap after lap they tore around the track but at first Ciari pulled a slight gap of about two kart lengths. In the last stages of the 16-lap main Chinander closed up and they were nose-to-tail.

Behind them the pack started close but scramble coming out of Turn 2 spread them out. However up front close was the word.

In the end Ciari won with Chinander close behind at the flag.

Asked about how he kept the lead he said, ” Just making sure I didn’t make a mistake, I knew if I made a mistake that would be her opening. I knew I had enough to be wide enough that she couldn’t get by me but you know, one little slip up and she would have had the lead for sure.”

Then he thanked everyone at the track, especially the 206 class as it’s fun and the reason he’s out there.

To say racing is unpredictable would be a huge understatement and the Junior 2 main was an example of this. It also brought the curtain down on the day?s racing.

On the green Meeahmee Malone briefly led until Brooks Anderline swept by to take the point. Malone?s race ended early on lap 3 when his kart lost a wheel.

After Wyatt Sander caught Anderline it was a nose-to-tail duel until Sander made his move coming out of Turn 2 and took the lead. Anderline for his part went wide, hit the dirt but was able to continue.

This gave Sander a gap and Anderline fell into the clutches of Tanner Schultz. They also began a nose-tail-duel for second, a fact that helped Sander escape.

With four laps to go the Anderline/Schultz duo caught a lapper going into the right hand Turn 6. Schultz chose the inside line while Anderline went to the outside.

Unfortunately the slower driver seemed to be unaware where Anderline was when he moved over to give Schutlz more room. The resulting contact sent Anderline sliding off course and put him out of the race.

Up front Sander was home free as long as he didn?t make any mistakes as there was not enough time for Schultz to catch him.

NNKC
Wyatt Sander scored his first ever victory in the Junior 2 main.

In the end a delighted Sander scored his first victory ever and after the post weigh-in was congratulated by Schultz, who said, ?It?s about time.?

Then Sander said, ?Had a rough start, came back and it’s all good.?

When asked about the pass for the lead he commented,?I didn’t expect it to be there, I was kind of surprised he (Anderline) let me in honestly. I thought he was going to hold it as that’s where I got him all day but I just kind of slid on in. It’s easier on my mind if I’m on my own but I’m a lot faster if I’m chasing someone.?

Then he thanked his stepfather for fixing the kart every time something breaks as well as for all the encouragement he gives him and his brother.

The TAG/KA100/Open Cycle race was another multi-class affair with four different groups racing together. So the overall winner was only one of four after the checkered waved.

Right after the start Jeff Cluver, racing in Tag Masters, was on point with the only KA 100 Senior driver Bryce Berry right behind him. Soon second place was taken over by the other Tag Masters Scott Andrews.

NNKC
In Tag Masters overall winner Jeff Culver was chased by Scott Andrews for most of the race.

After that the chase was on as Culver held off Andrews. Behind them it as a three way duel for the KA 100 Master victory.

Up front was Mike McMullen holding off Carmen Brewer and Luke Anderson. Lap after lap this trio circulated with the oldest driver keeping the youngsters at bay.

NNKC
In KA100 Masters Mike McMullen spent the entire race holding off a determined Carmen Brewer.

At the checkered Culver won the over all victory with a 2.067 second gap over runner up Andrews. Behind them McMullen won the KA100 Master group beating Brewer by just over a half second.

Berry of course won the KA 100 Senior Class victory and Levi Ratto was the Tag Senior winner.

“Yea, that’s what I like close racing. Two guys challenging, I didn’t make very many mistakes and that allowed me to hold on to the win,” Culver said after the race. “I need to thank my beautiful wife and Nevada Kart Club for on these great races at a great facility with great volunteers. I’ve raced at a lot of tracks before and this is one of the better ones.”

The Masters race was a run away as Doug Hunter just left everyone in his dust to sweep the day. Behind him Brud Beaudoin ended up second after a race long duel with Harrell Fischer with Jason Anderline coming home fourth.

NNKC
In the Masters race this was about as close as anyone got to eventual winner Doug Hunter, who swept qualifying, both heat races and the main.

“We had one of those really special days where the set up just really worked. Set a new track record in qualifying, won both heats and the main and frankly just dominated. It’s kind of the miracle day. The track is really good right now and the kart’s fantastic got thank Rodney with Nevada Kart Sport for setting it up for me,” Hunter said after the race.

The biggest run away victory of the day was in the Junior 1 Class where the youngest drivers compete. Winning the day was Isaiah Nobels as the finished over eight seconds ahead of runner up Giovanni Medina.

NNKC
The main began with the Junior 1 event. Here Isaiah Nobles heads to victory after leaving everyone in his dust.

Despite this the race wasn’t a cake-walk for anyone, especially with differing skill levels between the newer and more veteran drivers. Right after the start three karts were taken out in a scramble with another dropping out a lap later.

The biggest incident that stopped the race came on the 11th,out of 16 laps. Going into the left-right-left complex that leads to the front straight two karts tangled.

Cooper Perez seemed to have gotten the worst of if when he had contact with George Hitti’s kart. In fact the EMT’s at the track were summoned but fortunately Perez seemed to only have gotten a sore leg out of it.

The red flag had karts stopped in several places around the track. Once the race was called all of them had to get their karts started and slowly drove back to the pits.

Since this race started the day this caused a bit of a delay in the schedule.

Back in the pits Nobles said, “It was fun, I had some challenges until Cooper spun out but after that I didn’t have challenges. The lap traffic was pretty hard and it was hard to get around them”

Then he thanked his friend Brooks Anderline for helping him as well as his Poppa, Mama and brothers. After taking a moment he expressed his wish that Collyn Hill wasnt hurt in the first lap scramble.

There were four F-125 shifters on hand and they looked to be setting the fastest race of the day. On the green Cody McKinney took off with Zach Rivera soon chasing him.

It was a nose-to-tail duel until lap 5 when McKinney made a huge mistake in Turn 3A. Since he had to restart his kart McKinney was sent to the pits.

The rule is if the driver?s motor is still running they can continue but if it isn?t then that driver is out of the race.

This gave Rivera a huge gift and he took it ripping around the track and scoring the victory. Dean Andrews tried to make a race of it but fell over three and a half second short at the finish.

NNKC
Zach Rivera on his way to winning the F-125 feature.

“You know first heat I botched the start, I was starting first and I just messed it up. Went back in the second, had to fight for first he opened up on the last lap and I went for it and we ended up in a little scuffle so I had to start in the back in the main,” Rivera said. “And in the main this driver (he was looking at McKinney and laughing.), the one that wins a lot he just keeps making mistakes and crashing. He’s a good driver, I’m happy he’s out here, I hope more people come out next time.”

By this time McKinney had come over and both drivers were giving each other some good nature ribbing.

Then Rivera said, “I plan on racing this stuff a little bit more. You know the 206 career is long pasted me, the KA career is now passing me. I just want to, I’m not really here for a career, just here to have fun and I think shifters are a lot of fun”

Then he thanked his father, who owns Nevada Kart Sport as well as Jeff Wamre, who gave him the chassis and motor he used.

Next up for NNKC is the annual night race. This year it?s on Saturday July 27 with an 8 p.m. start time as they race into the night.
