FERNLEY 95A SPEEDWAY – GOOD NIGHT OF RACING

FERNLEY, NV (June 29) – Although the car count was a bit low, Fernley 95A Speedway hosted a good night of racing for the fans. And great weather made it a wonderful evening.

When the 13-car IMCA field got the green Barry Stone was on point but soon had Robert Miller after him.

Early on there was a quick caution and on the restart Cory Sample was after the leader with Gene Kay in tow. Soon Sample was on point with Kay, who took second was being chased by Miller.

On lap 7 there was another caution when Steve McQueen spun between Turns 1 and 2 while Stone pitted. Then Vincent Evenson’s car came to a halt on the backstretch.

When things got rolling it was the Sample/Kay show up front. A big slide through Turn 2 allowed Kay to slip under him and take the lead.

Next time through Turn 2 Sample returned the favor and took the lead back. Now Kay was being chased by Ryan McDaniels as they started dueling for the second spot.

In the end Sample won followed by McDaniels, who did get the second, Kay and Chris Olexiewicz.

“We got there and I was trying to ride then it was still a little greasy then Gene got under me. Don’t know if I left the door open, just trying not to hit the water at the bottom. Then I got my rhythm going and the track dried up so it was clean sailing from there,” Sample said after the race.

Then he thanked Glen and Kimberly Plake and Kimberly Pool for their support.

Seven Sport Mods that took the green and Rusty McMillan was on point. However he spun and collected Shayna Nieman so a restart was ordered.

ON the second green McMillan took off only to spin again and collect Craig Nieman, who couldn’t avoid him. The race was halted to the track crew could get McMillan’s car out of the way.

Soon after racing resumed there was another spin but by now Andy Welch had taken the lead. There would be one more caution that slowed things down.

Up front Welch was on point and would take the victory.  Craig Nieman tried but ended up second ahead of Shayna Nieman, whose car will need some body repair.

During the trophy presentation Welch said, “The track was a little rough, a little slick and the car was really loose. Just take your time, be smooth and hit your marks. I have no sponsors but am sure looking for them. Bought the car out of California but none of the names on it are mine.”

Only four Hobby Stocks were present but they  put on a good race. On the green veteran racer Tom Haxall was on point.

Behind him Rick Miller used an inside pass to take over second and the chase was on. Lap after lap Miller closed the distance between them.

A caution erased Haxall’s advantage and after the restart Miller made what was the winning pass as he took the lead. Haxall ended up second followed by Alex Kniestedt and Dan Dias.

After the race Miller said, “It was my turn. The track was pretty nice and smooth. I had to battle with Tom, catch up and finally got around him. It was a great race.”

Then he thanked Shuman’s Custom Cycles, Miller’s Chop Shop and A&W Restaurant.

The veteran Haxall used to race in Carson City and now drives the 55 Hobby Stock. After the race he said, “I’ve been doing this since I was 18 and that was a long time ago. This is the first my car ran good all year so I was happy that it ran good. It’s hard to stay ahead of Rick, he doesn’t make too many mistakes.”

Haxall like many others is self sponsored but thanked Miller’s Chop Shop for their support.

Next race scheduled for 95A Speedway is Saturday, June 13 with a 6 p.m. start to the action.
