MOTO MOUTH MEMORIAL 100

NIGHTINGALE, NV (Sept. 22) – After being rained out in the spring the Trailblazers Motorcycle Club finally got to run the Moto Mouth Memorial 100. The race honors long time announcer Bob “Moto Mouth” Cavakis, who passed away almost a year ago.

Rather than starting the season the race is now the sixth round and begins the fall season. Great weather set the stage for Sunday’s big bike race and 86 riders showed not only to race but to honor Cavakis as well.

The race is comprised of two loops with the first being a bit over 48 miles long while the second was 43 miles. To be classed as a finisher a rider must complete the first loop.

Race leader Corey Fletcher heads for the pits at the end of Loop 1.

After 2:36:51 the winner Cory Fletcher reached the finish line.

“It was a lot of fun, I ended up getting an 8th place start,” he said. “I just tried to keep picking people off but ended up going down and over the bars. After that I just held it stead but didn’t know how close Daron Rahlves was until about mile 85. I looked back, saw him and it was just game on at that point.”

Then he thanked RMS, Chick Fil A, DDC Sprockets, his parents and those that support him.

As usual all three classes, expert, amateur and novice lined up in their separate groups. A banner is raised and when it is lowered that’s time to fly.

Leading the Expert Charge is (510) Russell Tonjum with Georff Buscho and Corey Fletcher (10) on his right.

Leading the expert change when they turned left into a sand wash was Russell Tonjum accompanied by Geoff Buscho and Fletcher. After that it was on to the longest loop.

As riders headed for the pits at the end of that first lap Fletcher was on point followed by Rahives, Tonjum and then fifth place Honea. At that time they were actually pretty spread out as were the rest of the riders behind them.

As they reached the pits some riders chose to call it quits after one lap. The rest however would make a quick stop then charge out back onto the second loop.

Then as the fast riders returned the course was closed to any others that were just finishing their first loop.

Daron Rahvels would get up after a crash and finish second overall.

While Fletcher took first overall finishing second was Daron Rahlves from Truckee with a time of 2:37:18. For him it was an up and down battle where he did lead for a while.

“Had a fun time, there were some awesome trails, sand washes were super, super fun,” he said. “You know when you get into the flow, I don’t have much experience as I’m in Tahoe & Truckee riding in the woods but this desert stuff is different for me. So again it flowed pretty good I rank it right up there for a variety of stuff.”

Portions of the course were on dirt roads and Rahives said his top speed at 83 miles an hour. He like Fletcher had at least one crash.

“I know how fast Cory is but I think he was on cruise mode at the end and was a little surprised I was there so it was back and forth,” he said. “I ended up leading at the last check then really tried to push hard. Was going down the hill, there was a kink in the wash and I was going too fast so I tried to gas and it just exploded.”

Rahives related that he went over the bars and his Leatt broke so it was hanging around his neck for the last five miles. That piece of safety equipment many riders wear probably saved him from having a broken collar bone.

“Then I got back on him, was getting squirrely but he had the momentum and passed me there,” he said. “Physically it was getting a little scary and I was lucky in that one crash.”

Then he thanked the MRANN series as well as all the Trailblazers and other volunteers for putting on the event.

A scant two seconds behind Rahlves was third place Reece Honea while the hole shot leader Tonjum ended up fourth and Drew Chattin finished fifth.

Fifth overall was Drew Chattin, who races with the number Bob “Moto Mouth” Cavakis used to ride with.

“I actually got in second but made a little mistake and had too much arm pump so the first lap kind of killed me,” Honea said.” It was really fun, a bummer to deal with the dust but it is what it is in desert racing.”

Despite arm pump and a first lap mistake Reece Honea ended up third and almost had a shot at second overall.

Then he gave thanks to Big Valley Honda, Fly Racing, Pro Vision Goggles, M.J. Barenbak, RMS and Pete at General Transmission.

For Corey Fletcher winning this trophy was very special. He was on the Moto Mouth Mini Team for years and Cavakis helped him as well.

For Fletcher this race and victory was very special to him. Cavakis, Moto Mouth,” had a big influence and was a huge help in his younger days.

“I was on the Moto Mouth Mini Team for many years,” Fletcher said. “He always helped and before my first national paid for my suspension.”

Fletcher also carries a Moto Mouth graphic on his bike.

Mikey Majors and Terry Scheetz (22) lead the amateur charge.

When the amateur line was sent off Mikey Majors led the charge with Terry Scheetz. Not far away the pack was chasing them into that first sand wash.

After the 2:50:37 mark Josh Cook was the first amateur to reach the finish line after completing both loops. He also won the 4-Stroke Amateur class but his post race interview had to be kept short.

Finishing 9th Josh Cook was the first amateur to complete both loops.

“I’ve been fighting a cold so really don’t have a voice right now,” he said. “It was fun, fast and was a blast. I really liked the long sandy washes, it was real fast, fast paced and was a little bit of a break from whoops and hard rocks out there.”

Then he thanked his wife and their baby sitter.

Jerome Turnbull (rt) gets the Novice hole shot when their race started.

Last to start were the Novice racers but they were held up just a bit so the dust from the amateur start was totally clear. Once that happened the banner dropped and they were on their way.

The first Novice to finish both loops was Jeffrey Willis with a time of 3:19:53.

Jeffrey Willis ended up 32nd overall and was the first Novice to complete both loops.

“I’m super tired but it was a lot of fun. The course was really sandy and a lot of whoops in the last 20 miles,” he said. “But it was really fun and there were a couple of people I was fighting with but I passed them.”

Then he thanked his parents, sister as well as Pigeon Flow and Renthal.

The first woman to finish both loops was Reno High School junior and honors student Cami Ingram. She had a time of 3:30:20 and won the woman’s novice class.

“It was rough,, super fun as lap two was a lot faster than lap 1,” she said. “It was tiring but I just kept going and had fun with it. My least favorite part was that downhill, that was rough by my favorite part were all the roads because I could take breather. When I checked my top speed is was bout 65 or 70 miles an hour.”

Then she thanked her parents, RMS Chick Fli A, Moto Graffiti and especially her pit crew that keeps her ready do go.

Looking down the list of finishers in 20th place was the first 50+ Expert Danny Young while the ageless Pete Prichard ended up 55th overall but won the 60+ Class.

• Saturday was for the youngsters as well as the V Women (Saturday only.) and Bombers. The Pee Wee race was won by Tucker Whitworth.

In the second race Walker McGreal, a 100cc Expert won the overall with second place Chrystal Ponsock taking the women’s class victory. Scott Martin was the Bomber winner with a 10th place finish.

Now MRANN racers have two weeks off before the Mason Valley Dirt Squirts stages the Camel Tow 100 south of Fallon. For further information please go to www.racemrann.com.
