DESERT PARK RACEWAY: NNKC ENDS 2019 SEASON

STEAD, NV (Sept. 29) – Despite blustery winds and cold temperatures Desert Park Raceway was alive with the sounds of go kart racing this Sunday. It was the final points race for the Northern Nevada Kart Club (NNKC).

On this day first victories and a first championship were celebrated. Not to mention some hard racing.

Over the past season the Senior LO206 class has had some barnburner races. This time a third generation driver, following the tire tracks of his grandfather and father scored his first victory but it took some doing.

Deeahmee Malone, a third generation racer, on his way to winning in the Senior LO206 main. It was his first victory in karting.

“It took a lot of time to make it up into first and we finally freakin did it,” Deeahmee Malone said. “I’ve been doing this for about three years, been trying to get up there with the fast guys and I finally managed to do it. I want to thank my dad, family and my racing team for helping me out through all these three years.I just want to cry right now, it’s amazing how I made it to first place for the first time.”

When the green flag waved on the 14-lap main event Steve Dow, who won both heats took off with Jacob Ciari and Alec Beaudoin were right behind him. Further back Malone was in fourth but had his sights set on the front.

Every lap Malone would pick off another of his rivals and soon was second and closing on Dow. Using the draft going down the front straight Malone finally slotted himself into first.

After several laps in the Senior LO206 main Deeahmee Malone finally got the lead.. Here he’s chasedby Steve Dow, Jacob Ciari and Alex Beaudoin.

Behind him Dow had a solid third until he hit a bump in Turn 6, which turned his kart sideways and he wound up on the dirt. This allowed Ciari and Beaudoin to get past.

Up front Malone had the bit between his teeth and was extending his lead every lap. In fact his lap of 53.031 was the quickest of the race.

At the end a very excited Malone took the checkered followed by Ciari, Beaudoin and Nick Villaman in fourth.

Then later several drivers gathered and exchanged their experience on the track.

Due to the cold weather most of the mains were reduced from the usual 12 to 10 laps. The exception was Senior LO206 as they lobbied and got a 14-lap main.

For one young Junior 1 driver it was a day he won?t easily forget. When the green waved for the main, first race of the day, Isaiah Nobles took off and left everyone in his dust. Further back Giovanni Medina was running solo in second while the race was between Collyn Hill and Joseph Hitti as they disputed which one of them would ended up third.

Further back Jeremiah Nobles and Brody Picotte had a race of their own to see which would end up fifth.

Isaiah Nobles (4) racing to victory and his first championship; in Junior 1. Here he’s chased by runner up Giovanni Medina.

At the end Nobles scored he victory followed by Medina, Hill and Hitti. Their race was the first main run on the newly sealed track although everyone ran two heat races earlier.

“The race was fun but the track is good but it’s really slick right now,” Nobles said. “It’s my first championship so I’m pretty excited.”

Isaiah Nobles on his way to scoring the first class championship. He was hte Junior 1 winner.

Then he thanked his Poppa for all his work on the kart, his Nama for getting him to the race and his brothers, who also race.

When the day began it appeared there would not be a shifter race but after three were ready to go there was a shifer class race and heats.

These karts use a standing start and after two fast warm up laps they took their place on the starting grid. When the flagman turned on the green lights they were off.

Royal McKee on his way to scoring a runaway victory in the Shifter main.

Up front UNR student Royal McKee just left the other two in his wake as he roared off to claim the victory. Finishing second as Adam Auerbach while Jeff Wamre ended up third.

After the post race weigh in McKee said, ?It feels great honestly, it’s a little slick out there, they just repaved the track but honestly I don’t really mind it. It makes more fun for me. I love how everything feels, finally got the motor feeling pretty solid at the end and yea it was good overall feeling for everything.?

McKee did have an advantage as his motor is 175cc and he thanked his father for drivng up from Las Vegas to support him.

The Masters LO206 main began with three karts nose-to-tail for the lead. On point was Paul Picotte followed by two other karts. It appeared the race was going to stay that way until the final laps.

Exiting Turn 2 both leaders had contact that sent them onto the dirt allowing Justin Heath to take the gift as well as the lead. In the end he scored the victory followed by Brud Beaudoin and Giovanni Medina.

Master LO206 winner Justin Heath leads Brud Beaudoin and Giovanni Media during their main.

After the race a smiling Heath said, ” The leaders bumped into each other there and I got right past them. I was third coming out of Turn 2 and they ran into each other and off into the dirt. It was a gift.”

Then he thanked Cole Nelson for providing the karts and had high marks for the track. He also added that there was some light hail during the race.

Having the honor of ending the 2019 season was given to the Junior 2 class but only three were on hand.

While it was a runaway victory for Brooks Anderline but behind him Heavyn Hill and Nathan Heath had a battle of their own to see which one would finish second. In the end all three finished in that order although Brooks had more than a straight away lead at the checkered.

Brooks Anderline scored the final victory at the season ending race for NNKC. Here he’s on his way to winning the Junior 2 main.

Later Anderline allowed that the race wasn?t that easy because he was trying to improve on his lap times.

After the race he said, “It was a tough race I was just trying to beat myself in lap times. We got down to where we wanted to be all day so that’s a good thing in itself. Yesterday we were a little bit pushy, we made a couple of adjustments and the kart is sticking really well right now and I like the track.”

Then he thanked his father as well as his friends Isaiah, Jeremiah and Noah as well as everyone that supports him.

After the final checkered flag waved and before the trophies were handed out NNKC president Rachel Anderline reflected on the season that just ended.

“Been a great season, we had a lot of new members, which is always wonderful, especially for the club. Lots of family members; We have Dads, sons in different classes and Grandpas and kids so it’s great. I love it,” she said.

Next up will be the awards banquet on November 9th in Truckee. Over the winter the board will be working on their plans for the 2020 season. Until late next March Desert Park will be silent except for those testing their karts. But in late March it will once again echo to the sound of kart racing.
