RENO, NV (Nov. 18) – The third weekend of the month means the latest meet by Reno Cars and Coffee. This time the location is by the Classic Rock Coffee shop located at West McCarran and Mae Anne.
Mother Nature blessed the event with another day of great weather.
These meets have a mix of cars from exotic to not so exotic. One of the cars that stood out was a 570S McLaren owned by Tanner Larsson.
“I’ve been a McLaren fan since basically the early 90’s so I’ve always wanted one. Finally got in my price range a few years ago,” he said. ”I bought a 570S and it was a lemon, had to go back to the factory and it scared me off a little bit. But I’ve been hunting this specific build package with the Curacao blue, white leather and carbon, which they told me was a unicorn.”
One reason he wanted the car with this color paint was that his mother had lived in Curacao and that’s the color of the car.
“Anyway this is a 2018 570S and the build package has the diamond finish wheels and this combo,” McLaren said. “It’s a Unicorn unless you build it specifically then wait, as you’re never going to find one. They don’t ever have them as nobody ever orders this combo.”
He added some friends found this one and two weeks later it was his.
“So I’ve had it about four months now. I’ve had her up to about 150, nothing crazy as I haven’t had a chance to drive like was supposed to be driven yet,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun and the convertible is my favorite thing. I’ve had all kinds of other crazy, cool cars but first convertible I’ve ever had besides like a Jeep. And it’s a whole other experience driving in one of these.”
In the parking lot there were a mix of cars. One of them was a great restoration of a Datsun pick up and not far away was parked a classic VW Beetle. These meets are a great place to meet other car people.
Over in one line there were two Porsches parked next to each other while a short distance away a drifting car was beside a BMW, which was parked by a hopped up Sabaru.
Another exotic car, parked by the coffee shop was a Lotus Evora. For racing fans it’s from the same company that over the years has fielded legendary racing cars, mainly in Formula 1.
Lauren Stowell owns the Evora and helped Reno Cars & Coffee grow in its early years.
“When it was newish I helped create the Face Book page that got the events out and grew to what it is now,” she said. “But I haven’t been involved for several years now.”
Asked about how she got the Lotus Stowell said, “Back in about 2013 I was like, ‘I want a sports car.’ I was shopping for an Aston Martin and I went just on a whim to a test drive for the Evora. Wasn’t interested, didn’t know anything about Lotus but the test drive was so exquisite I became obsessed on getting an Evora, which worked out for me as they are cheaper than Aston Martins of any year.”
Shortly after that she found one for sale in North Carolina and is now the second owner of the car.
“I love it,” she said. “Hasn’t really had a lot of problems for a Lotus. When I got it you know the radio didn’t work, it had a little issue with its clutch master cylinder. I got that fixed and it’s been really solid.
“I don’t daily it but I do drive it a lot, especially in the fall when it’s nice weather like this. I absolutely adore it and it makes me feel good. It was my trophy, I met a business goal and my reward was to get the car.”
Stowell owns a foot ware company whose brand is American Dutchess. The company produces historic shoes and reproductions for the film industry, actors in TV, Opera as well as all kinds of entertainment.
She also mentioned there is another Evora that looks almost identical to hers’ but it’s supercharged and has red brake calipers. First time she saw that other Lotus was pretty exciting to say the least.
“There was a day when he comes blazing through an intersection and I was in my other car,” she said. “My heart started beating and I was ‘oh my God, somebody stole my car!’ Then I saw the red brake calipers and I said, ‘okay, it’s fine.’”
Talking to her one soon learns the Lotus brought some real joy into her life.
“I love that car, honestly I don’t know if I’ll ever get rid of it,” she said. “I’m a long term owner, it’s just about to turn 30,000 miles so she’s still young at heart. I feel rowdy when I drive it but my other car is a Focus ST but I drive it way more spirited then I do this car. I drive it a bit like a grandma in this car.”
The meet went on until noon when everyone probably headed out to cruise or just take a drive in the nice Sunday weather.
Next up for Reno Cars & Coffee is the first of the December 1st meet at the Kietzke Starbucks but this one will be different. It’s the annual Toy Drive where folks are asked to bring an unwrapped toy.
While the meet begins at 10 a.m. at 11:30 everyone heads up to the Northtowne Winco parking lot. That’s where they join up with the Old Slammers of Reno and their 7th annual Toys for Kids meet.
At the end of the joint meet all the toys are donated to the Children’s Cabinet. This effort will help insure a child will receive a toy this Christmas.

• This weekend motorcycle fans have some great news. The top winners at this year’s ISDE (International Six Day Enduro) event staged in Portugal had two American teams win their respective classes.
The Women’s class started in 2007 and that year an American team won. Well this year three women repeated that feat and they are Tarah Geiger, Brandy Richards and Becca Streets.
On the men’s side, teammates Stu Baylor, Taylor Robert, Kailub Russell and Ryan Sipes were the winning riders.
Competing for six straight days is no mean feat so we extend our congratulations to the members of both teams.
• On Sunday another native Nevadan Kyle Busch won the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup in the final season ending race at Homestead-Miami.
