TRAIL BLAZERS KICK OFF MRANN SEASON

NIGHTINGALE, NV (Feb. 16) – For over 20 years the Trailblazer’s Motorcycle Club has kicked off the MRANN season with a Hare & Hound race. This year’s edition was the “Wash” ington 100.

Nice weather set the stage for a great Sunday as several out of state riders showed up. In fact there were 167 on hand to get this year’s desert racing going. The two loop course was with the first being 45 miles long and the second 50 miles long.

While the course was dry there was a welcome wind to blow it away. For one rider dust wasn’t a problem at all.

After two hours of riding Willey Heiss heads for the checkered flag as he won the “Wash” Ington 100.

“I feel great, what an awesome track, overall a great day,” Willy Heiss said. “I didn’t see anybody, rode by myself all day.”

Then he thanked TBT, his wife for being there in the pits, Let’s Ride, X-Brand Goggles, Moose and Rhino Power. His elapsed time was 2:34:13 which gave him an almost four minute lead over second place.

After that he was presented with the winner’s trophy.

A happy Willy Heiss holds the winner’s trophy after winning the first MRANN race of the year.

Before racing begins there is a rider’s meeting where the national anthem was played, a prayer given then Ron Honea gave specifics about the course. After that a side-by-side led the riders out to the starting area where they were launched with experts going first then amateurs and finally novice riders.

After the start riders head up a wash then swing around, go over a hill coming down close to the pits before heading north onto the course. At that time Heiss was second followed by Dennis Belingheri and Tayson Weeks and Drew Chattin.

Soon Heiss took the point and showed everyone his heels. Coming back to the pits at the end of the first lap Heiss led second place second place Belingheri by just over a minute and a half. By now Tayson Weeks came by five minutes later. After that the other riders began to arrive at the pits.

Tayson Weeks completes his first lap and raced to a second overall when he completed the second lap.

At the checkered flag Weeks finished with an elapsed time of 2:38:07 just under four minutes behind the flying Heiss.

After receiving his winners pin he said, “I feel good, first time out here in a MRANN race. Rode good, felt good all day. It’s crazy how the terrain is different like Nevada, California or up in Idaho that’s where I’m from.”

Then he thanked his dad for his help, Gil over at TBT, the whole Let’s Ride team, Gas Gas, Bell Helmets, X Brand Goggles, Fly Racing CD Boots and everybody that supports him.

Drew Chattin raced to third overall in Sunday’s race.

Finishing up third with a time of 2:38:44 was Drew Chattin.

“I feel pretty good actually. No battles but was just banging with Dennis for a little bit and then he let me go by then tried to pass me then and I was thinking, ‘nah, it’s not going to happen.’ The course was awesome, it was definitely a lot of whoops that’s for sure, it beat me.”

Then he thanked Moto-Source, FMF, Cathy Cavakis, Moto Graffitti and his parents.

Not far behind came Dennis Belingheri with a time of 2:39:03.

Dennis Belingheri on his way to a 4th place finish.

With a laugh he said, “I feel the same as when I started. You know right after the start I was behind Willy, it was kind of fun because whenever I saw some bike go off the course and I did the same thing I didn’t feel too bad. He (Heiss) was riding really good and those whoops just wore me down in that last loop. Drew and this kid (Weeks) got by me so it’s all good.”

Then he thanked his wonderful wife, all the Rim Benders and his pit crew.

Looking further down the two-lap finishers the first amateur was Red Herrara, who finished 20th overall with a time of 2:55:26.

First amateur to finish both loops was Red Herrera, who finished 20th overall.

“I feel good, I need a sandwich,” he said. “The course was really fun, I remember some of it from last year’s, I had more fun than I did pressure. There were a few battles especially at the beginning as the battles I had were with the experts. My goal, after I knew I was first Am to catch as many expert as possible.”

Then he thanked his wife, his new born baby, my mother-in-law and their dog.

Dropping down to the 48th and 49th finishing position were the first two Novice riders. Finishing with a time of 3:20:27 was Matt Chamblin in the 40+ class from Red Bluff, California and part of the Red Neck Rippers. This MRANN event had many riders that came over from other areas.

Matt Chamblin, who riders in the 40+ Novice class, was the novice to complete both loops. He finished 48th for the day.

“It’s my third MRANN race, feeling really good, got to thank my shop and my coach Robby Pickens and 707 Suspension,” he said. “The course was really good, it actually wasn’t that dusty once you got out there it was pretty choice chocolate cake dirt. No whoops, none at all but my spine says different.”

He added that the high speed was probably the most challenging part of the course and the fact he doesn’t know the area. He’ll be back for the March race outside of Toulon.

Lance Carlo was the second Novice rider to cross the finish line after completing both loops.

Right after he finished the second Novice Lance Carlo arrived and said he thought Chamblin was an amateur. They had some back and fourth after Carlo said he was tired.

Chamblin laughed and said, “I’m three times his age.”

Moving down the finishing order Carrie Ingram was the first woman to finish both laps. That ride put her in 67th place with a time of 3:31:51. In the ancient warrior class, or 60+, Joel Ellis was the first to finish with a time of 3:37:52.

Out of the 167 riders 116 finished both laps while 40 only ran the first lap, which qualifies them as a finisher while 10 riders were classed as DNF and one as DNS. All in all with the weather and course almost everyone had a good time and were glad to be racing again after the winter lay off.

• At every MRANN race the youngest racers, or Pee Wee’s start Saturday and this week they also got to start the season. Saturday’s races are on a short course for those that want to race but not in Sunday’s longer event.

Casey Pinther won the overall plus 65 Novice class while Logan Johnson was the 4-stroke winner. Teigen Biddle won in the 7-9 Class while Jayden Pheasant ws the 6 & Under winner.

Next up was the multi class race combining Mini Bikes, V Women, Bombers and Vintage.

Winning the overall as well as the Bomber Class was Arie Furlong while Landen Williams took the runner-up spot and won in 100 Expert. Alequin Scheetz was the Women’s Expert winner as Jesse Miller took the 100 Amateur Class.

Moving down the list Carson Key was the 100 Novice winner while Angie Figg took Women’s Amateur as Ted Elswick was the Vintage winner and Sierra Koch won in Women’s Novice. Finally Peyton Maas topped the 65 Expert as Henry Young won the 65 Amateur Class.

Out of 38 riders that started 31 of them finished the race.

The next MRANN event is scheduled for the weekend of March 14/15 outside of Toulon. For further information on MRANN please check their website at www.racemrann.com.
