RACING PREVIEW: MAY 14 TO 17

RENO, NV (May 13) – This Racing Preview has some good news for a change. Yes racing is back although in a limited form but I’m seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

CAR MEETS & CRUISES:

Announcement for Friday’s first cruise in downtown Fernley. Photo courstey – Jim Guthrie.

• The weekend gets off to a rolling start Friday from 7 until 9 p.m. That’s when the weekly cruises up and down the main street of Fernley begin hosted by Reno Sparks Cars & Pizza.

• Saturday is Armed Forces Day and Fallon had a celebration planned. Sadly due to the scare over this virus Churchill County had the organizers cancel the event which included the Poker Chip Run.

• Saturday evening there is another car event, FLAME SATURDAYS. It begins at 7 p.m. and the starting point is 1490 East 4th Street in Reno so it might be a cruise as well.

• Sunday at 10 a.m. is when Reno Cars & Coffee hosts another of its car meets. The location is at Del Rio Pub & Grill on the Westside of town off McCarren. These meets are a great way to meet fellow car people.

RACING (REGIONAL):

• Friday and Saturday is when Summit Raceway in Elko hosts its first race of the season. Of course social distancing in the pits is a must and at this event here will be no spectators. Hopefully in the near future fans will again be welcome.

Top Gun had to cancel this week’s planned drag races. Photo courtesy – Top Gun Drag Strip.

• On a sad note this week’s scheduled drag races at Top Gun Drag Strip, located south of Fallon, have been canceled. Hopefully the straight-line racers will finally get to light up the tree in June.

Saturday there will be a test and tune session on the oval. Photo courtesy – Photoflight Production.

• On a more positive note 95 Motor Sports Complex has apparently done some work on the oval’s banking. This Saturday, from 9 until 2 p.m. there will be another test and tune session.

PRACTICE (MOTOCROSS):

 • MMX Racing continues its schedule for practice sessions from Wednesday through Sunday. On Thursday and Friday, from 3 p.m. until dark with both the sand and kid’s tracks being open.

Saturday from 9 until 2 p.m. is busy as the main, sand and kid’s tracks are open while the vintage track is reserved for an OSMX ride day. Then from 9 until 3 p.m. on Sunday the main, sand, vintage and kid’s tracks are all open for practice.

• REP Racing MX is also hosting practice sessions on two of it tracks. On Saturday and Sunday from 9 until 2 p.m. E Street MX Park has sessions going.

Riverfront is switching to week-day evening sessions due to low rider turnout in the morning time. So on Thursday, from 5 until 10 p.m. there will be practice.

This week the phone message didn’t say if pre-registration was necessary or not but just in case one might want to check the website at www.repracingmx.com.

All available rider slots are full for Saturday and Sunday so if a person isn’t already signed up for them they won’t be able to practice then.

RACING (NATIONAL):

• NASCAR is back, even though the Invitational Simracing was entertaining now it’s time for real cars and drivers. However it will be totally televised as spectators won’t be in the stands.

The Lady in Black, Darlington Speedway will be the scene of NASCAR’s return to live racing. Photo courtesy – NASCAR.com

Sunday on FOX at 12:30 the NASCAR Cup racers take to the track called, “Too Tough to Tame,” or “The Lady in Black.” Darlington was NASCAR’s first super speedway and its odd shape makes it a challenge to set up a racecar.

Tuesday at 5 p.m. on Fox Sports 1 it’s time for the Xfinity series to face the challenges the Lady in Black offers.

That’s it for this weekend. Racing is starting to return and soon green flags will wave, starting gates drop and banners lowered as racers take off. What a great way to celebrate summer’s return. Be safe this weekend everyone.

Our newest sponsor is G.I.S.L Land Services that, while having a global client base it has a Western U.S.A. Focus. Owner Greg Ekins is a long time off road motorcycle racer competing in the MRANN Series as well as the AMA National Hare and Hound series.

Among the services offers are Surface and Mineral Title Reviews and Cartographic Services. The website is www.gislandservices.com.

Another great sponsor is General Transmission and Power Train Specialists. The shop is located at 2515 Sutro Street in Reno, a few blocks below Hug High School.

Former motorcycle racer Pete Attashian is the owner and they not only service older and newer transmission but now have a section dealing with high performance units including those used for towing.

Two of our sponsors are first class motorcycle shops located in Reno.

Our first sponsor is Reno Motorsports (RMS). Not only do they have about anything a rider might want or need and the store also has a full service shop.

Their location is at 964 Terminal Way, by the intersection with Mill Street. Store’s phone number is 775-322-1499 and the site is, www.rms-renomotorsports.com.

The next shop is Motosource located at 3180 Mill Street. Once again they are a full service shop plus about any thing a rider might need or want.

The phone number is 775-856-3855 and the website is, www.moto-source.com.

The next sponsor is an excellent place if you need collision repair on your car or truck. It’s Concours Body Shop, located at 250 Telegraph Street in Reno and has a long history of first class repairs.

Brian Saul is the owner, a car enthusiast himself and he’s committed to continuing the shop’s reputation of quality work. Phone number is 775-329-4557 and the website is, www.concoursbodyshop.net.

Hungry, want a great place to eat, then try PJ&CO for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and it’s a great place to watch your favorite sports. If you’re a rider, well Wednesday evening is Bike Night, always a great time to see some great looking bikes and meet like-minded people.

The location is 1590 South Wells Avenue, just north of the round about. Phone number is 775-323-6366 and their website is www.pjandco.net.

Good news, as soon as the crew is trained and place restocked PJ&Co should open by the end of the month. It’s a great place for a meal.
